Santa Ponsa in Mallorca hosts an annual historical reenactment called the Moors and Christians festival, commemorating King James I's conquest of Mallorca in 1229, where participants recreate the battle that took place on the local beaches, marking the historical landing site with a cross and demonstrating the cultural heritage of this Balearic island.

Santa Ponsa - Mallorca - Majorca - 24th May 2026Added:
Well, today's um what day is it? Sunday.
It's the 24th of May. It's 2026.
And we've come down to Santa Ponza. It's it's evening time now. So, the sun's going down. And uh we may may try to catch a sunset. We'll see. Just been watching the ducks swimming in the pool.
And we just had met an Irish couple who uh we took some photographs of them. Uh or they asked us to take some photographs. So, we're just down there now having a look at the photographs.
Maybe even a look at our YouTube channel.
Um, it is, what time is it? It's 5 to 8 in the evening. The sun is still very bright, so it's not quite setting yet.
And, uh, there are lots and lots of people on the beach still.
A couple of ambulances down there, so something's happened, but very warm. We've had really warm temperatures just as it is in the UK.
Our daughter Serena in u Somerset sent me a picture of the >> more in England than here, wasn't it?
>> Yeah. Know it was a picture from a weather forecast. So in all the towns around I think it was 28Β° 29Β° so not that much different from here.
We're going to walk up this side. I think we should be a little bit in the shade. So shouldn't be too bad.
Look over the beach.
Rocky on here. Be careful.
It's the restaurant. We sometimes stop, have a drink.
in the beach. Nice one. Go for a little walk. Got to get up to the main road.
We don't often come this way, so it's um yeah, nice to come for a change. There are lots of bars and lots of restaurants along here.
I guess we have been to one or two of them. That's one where we go to the terrace. Really nice views over the beach.
So, Santa Pona has the uh the really big beach that we've just just been uh in front of. There's actually another beach which is uh along this road.
It's a little bit of a walk, but uh a nice little small cove, which uh we're aiming to walk past.
We'll see how it goes.
I think better for us in the morning there where you've not got the direct sun.
See the tano? That's the one that um you mentioned in Palmanova next to Castaways. That's moved. It's no longer next to Castaways. It's uh actually next to the uh burger shop, Burger Crown Burger.
But uh they seem to have uh appeared and all over the place. Elano very popular growing concern.
The kids are very cute.
one of my ex pupils >> obviously >> and they watch the videos which is even better news.
>> Oh, we had uh we went out for lunch today. So, um, we didn't go out this morning, so this is our first little outing of the day other than the lunch, which went on for quite a while. Um, we went to see our friends, Joe and Jess, two little ones, and Jesse's parents, uh, David and Tracy. They just arrived yesterday, and, uh, we desperately wanted to see them, just to say hello. And uh today was the only real opportunity because uh we've got the girls tomorrow and then we're going off to to the UK.
I did ask them about their experience of going through the entry exit system and David and Tracy uh they went through. This is the Rine by the way.
I'll get back to the entry exit sign.
The Rine is one of the places that we used to come quite often. We haven't been for a long time. uh do great value food.
Um always very consistent.
Um so yeah, one of the places we used to come years ago. Anyway, getting getting back to the entry exit system and the experience that um well, first of all, David and Tracy had, they said no trouble at all other than um David said the uh the machine just couldn't read his fingerprints and he tried three different machines and he just got waved on. Uh it just wouldn't work.
But not really any particular hold up or delay.
>> I've heard of that to other people.
>> Yeah, I think. Yeah, probably as you get older you your fingerprints are a little bit more difficult to read.
And uh so uh as to Joe and Jess, they've got two little ones. Um George and Francisco.
Uh George is seven.
How old's Francisco? She's How old's >> three. So, they're younger ones.
>> So, um yeah, Joe and Jess had a slightly different experience and they said that they because they were with children, it was a bit more um not quite so quick, you know, but didn't really say there was any particular delay. So, not really that very difficult. Uh but then again there was only their flight did say that if there were you know three or four flights coming in at the same time it might have caused a delay. Anyway, they're here enjoying their trip and uh um unfortunately we won't be able to see them again on this particular one, but they did say they might come again later on in the year.
Well, the road divides here. You can either go on the lower road or the higher road. Um it's largely residential as well and we take the higher road which is the main road actually the main road that goes eventually to El Toro Ser and Magabus but it's quite a way so don't plan on walking it.
some businesses along here. Not much in the way of shops and bars in this part until you get a bit further along. There are some apartments which I think might be holiday apartments. This one's just Delmare.
Got the view of the sea.
Actually, two or three years ago, we did come to a party, didn't we? in a villa just down here, >> luxury multi-million euro villa that um the owner actually built himself or his company did. Um part that's the way he does his business. He builds the villa, sells it and moves on and builds another one.
So, it was a villa that was for sale, but it's a bit out of our league, but very nice.
So, you got a mixture of residential now, mostly residential, the occasional uh holiday left.
This block we're coming to on the right actually I think is a holiday apartment complex.
Here you go. Flip-flop apartments.
Surfing player.
Not sure you do any surfing here.
The artwork there. It's quite a big complex actually.
Nice pool down there.
It's apartments. So, it's instead of stars, it's keys. It's got two keys.
You okay?
>> So the road that goes down goes down that way. behind all of these villas, but comes out to the same place.
One another reason for coming down here is um well in the end of August, beginning of September, they have their big um parade. I'm not sure whether I'm using the right word again, but uh it's the Moors and the Christians and uh it's to commemorate the retaking of Mayora by King James the first Haime the first Haime Pomero which was in 1229.
And this is one of the places they landed and uh marched from here into Palma to take the uh take the island.
Bit of an accident there.
And anyway, they reenact the uh the whole scenario and uh they uh they start at the cross.
just up the road here. And they come down here. Lots and lots of people take part in it. And then they have these battles.
And uh the first battle, which is a a relatively minor skirmish happens on this beach, which we're just coming to now. So this is the second Santa Panza beach.
much smaller, more intimate.
Nice little sandy beach though. And they have the the battle on there.
In the past, I've actually stood up here maybe and videoed it. But then they go on into uh into the main part of Santa Ponza and they have the main battle which is on the main beach. A whole big section of the beach is um sealed off and uh the battle commences. It's quite quite something to watch. Uh I did do a video of that a few years ago. There is a big car park here.
It's a bit of rough car park. Um and during the uh procession, the the horses um they usually have the horse fans and other vehicles there.
Just noticing this this bus stop is actually Jeremy the first 52. I don't know what the 52 is but uh Jam the first.
I said hi me and Catalan it's Jia me and we call it James of course the children's park seem to remember one year as well the rain came down not sure if it was to fill a profession mustn't have been but it was uh this whole Road was flooded.
>> Couple of bars here as well.
Just coming back down to the beach here.
>> Being a Sunday, the families have been out. Bring the picnics, bring the chairs and tables, and we sit on the beach, and they'll still be here until that sun goes down.
This along here is also one of the places where people come to to watch the sunset. And I'm walking directly into the sun, which is night in my eyes.
There's the little beach.
This is one of the places um they've suggested you could come to watch the eclipse on the 12th of August.
Maybe get far enough along here.
the viewers talking about they're quite modern in design.
Just in a residential street now, so I'll catch up with you a little bit further on. Here we go. This all opens up now. We've got nice views of the sea.
I've left Anita back at the park. She was a little blister on her toes, so find it a bit uncomfortable.
Fortunately, she does have a little medical kit with her, so she's got a plaster on there, so hopefully she'll be all right to get back.
Right.
A lot more boats than we usually see here.
Debbie and Cliff, our friends, came.
They stayed at that hotel right on the tip there, I think.
Nice. I think they're obviously a bit worried about the erosion here. So, that used to be the pavement. They've now extended the pavement into the road, made the road a bit narrower, but close that off because it looks as though it's going to fall off into the sea.
and put a nice stainless steel fence up.
That's new since the last time I think we came up here. I don't actually remember this way down. They've now got a little set of steps there. You can make your way down towards the sea.
Spot of fishing down there.
If we carry on up, we'll get to the cross.
People having picnics down below.
See the sun's getting quite low now.
It's just coming up to 25.
It'll be setting in the next half hour, I think. But I'm not going to make a need to wait all that time for me. But there are some benches where you can sit and take the weight off your feet.
The other thing I think people miss when they uh come to stay in Santa Panda is the fact that there is a marina and it's just around here. We might get a glimpse of that in a moment.
Gets a bit grally here.
straight into the sun now.
I think this will be very very crowded on the um 12th of August.
There are some other points which are quite high in Santa Pa.
If you look over there some steps This is the cross that marks the landing of Haimey the first in 1229.
It's actually got a freeze around it depicting that landing and battle.
Walk around.
So the beach the main big beach is down there.
And uh this is the entrance to the marina. Look. So there's a marina wall.
Yeah. Maybe you're going to see it from here. The sun sunset.
If we walk around, see the boat going into the marina. See a bit more of the marina as we come around.
Here it is.
Is this where Haimey the first brought his boats?
All the soldiers, knights, templars from amongst them.
It's very well hidden, isn't it? And very well protected from the the elements. So, it's a it's a very well sheltered marina. It just goes in there.
There was quite a way actually room for quite a few boats. I have actually on a occasion done a a video in there.
Going to make my way back towards me now.
I think maybe the last time we came here or time before chap sitting on the benches who stopped us and said I've seen you on the YouTube.
Yeah. So the the marine is all hidden down there amongst all of that. I've gone on a different path now, but it'll all take me back to the road and uh I just show you where the entrance to the marina is.
There a restaurant there.
See how long the shadows are now as the sun goes down.
Hello on the grally path again.
But if I walk down there, I'm going to have to walk back up. So, I'm not going to walk down there. But that's where the entrance to the marina is. If you want to go and investigate that, have a look at the boats. There not huge boats in there, but some very nice ones.
There's many out here. Wow. I think last time we came there were hardly any. Now, loads.
And normally when we come to Santa Pona, we walk along the main beach there and then we'll follow a path.
that walks right by the sea and then goes up by the apartment over there.
Become a little bit dangerous since the uh the whole thing collapsed the path.
It's a bit of a scramble now. Hopefully they'll get that sorted.
I'm going to head back to Anita now and uh catch up with you.
and we get to that little beach.
Here we are back at the little beach and uh yeah, still people on the beach I think and it is in the children's park just up the road.
Take away beers.
And there she is. Look.
There we go. So, we're going to make our way back up here and then back down into Santa Hansa. So, we'll catch up with you.
Move the camera a little bit cuz it's quite pretty looking down onto the beach.
Can get quite busy though. This road window.
Again, both roads go to the same place.
Just one's a low road, one's a high road.
I will catch up with you as we start to get near to the main part of Santa Panza. We're approaching the main resort of Santa Pansa. I'm not very good with the names of the hotels. here anywhere else actually but this one got a big climate. It's called the Baja Del.
>> It's quite a big complex. They've got a sky bar on the sixth floor.
And we're back to the Rine.
She's come here with a roy years ago. over the ride. Little just up the road from here.
Plus, it's another go to one of these bars or >> further down.
You got to come.
Balcon de Maria. That's the one we uh mentioned before.
And it says they're open all day, all year.
>> Yeah. Was it wasn't that one there?
to do with a mother.
>> Well, there was or wasn't there? Yeah.
>> Too much in the sun though, wasn't they?
But I know that's the sun's going down.
It's going to be bright in your eyes.
Come, come, come, come.
>> Yeah.
Oh my god.
This is where we came.
>> Mad Santa's like, and then More hotels up the road there.
It's the Jaggy thistle.
Is this where Leapy Lee's playing?
live music tonight.
I think he's sleepy though.
Did you know that was there?
>> I didn't know.
Sun's over there. It's busy.
Sun has not quite gone down. It's just won't be long now though.
sit over there.
>> Yeah.
Well, I found somewhere to put my hat down and we've got a lovely view over there. The sun's just about to set and we've ordered our drinks.
>> Well, we nearly forgot or I nearly forgot to finish the video and say cheers everyone.
>> Cheers.
>> And uh yeah, I don't know if you can see that poster behind, but it's pepper steak and chips β¬16.
Oh, I don't think we're going to have anything to eat here, but that's not a bad price, I don't think. Especially when you've got a lovely view of the sunset that's uh just gone down. Cheers, everyone.
>> Cheers.
>> We'll see you in the next one. Bye for now.
