Why German Officers Couldn't Explain The Phone Welded To US Tanks

In Normandy's hedgerow terrain (bocage), American tanks and infantry faced a critical communication problem because their radios operated on incompatible frequencies (FM for infantry, AM for tanks). Captain Edward Miller solved this by wiring a 1938 field telephone handset into an empty ammunition box, which was then bolted to the rear of Sherman tanks and connected to the tank's intercom system. This simple solution, costing less than a pair of boots, allowed infantrymen to directly communicate with tank commanders, enabling real-time coordination that saved countless lives. The Germans, who had invented combined arms warfare, never adopted this solution because their military doctrine was built on the principle that communication flowed from the top down through the chain of command, not from the bottom up to the man closest to the enemy.
