I'm genuinely confused how my last video noting that black women can make up between 40 to over 50% of sex trafficking victims in the US despite only being 6 to 7% of the population was interpreted as an opportunity to blame black women for their exploitation. Why district attorneys describe trafficking cases involving white girls as slavery while cases involving black girls are dismissed as pimping. Why although federal law clearly define minors involved in prostitution as victims of trafficking, black children are nearly 50% of all juvenile prostitution arrests. Why black adults account for over one-third of adult prostitution arrests with the vast majority being women and girls who may represent up to 63% of identified victims in various parts of the US. And it's not a coincidence that this form of violence is disproportionately happening to the most marginalized group in the country. According to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, sex trafficking vulnerability is driven by structural conditions that are consistently and uniquely imposed on black women and girls. These include poverty, housing instability, homelessness, neglectful welfare systems, particularly foster care, where black children are over represented and black girls are more likely to go missing than other racial groups. The National Center for Missing and Explodered Children reported that 86% of likely sex trafficking victims were in the care of social services when they went missing. Black women and girls are also more likely to have histories of early sexual and physical abuse without effective intervention or long-term support. At the same time, they're subjected to punitive responses from a young age, where black girls are disproportionately pushed into the schoolto prison pipeline, being two times more likely to be disciplined for minor infractions like dress code violations and three times more likely to be cited as disruptive. And the consequence is that black girls are pushed out of the education system and into the juvenile justice system, increasing their vulnerability to traffickers. For example, Los Angeles County reported that 92% of girls in the juvenile justice system who were identified as victims of sex trafficking were black. Layered on top of the racism and sexism is the harmful dynamic of the adultification of black girls and the hypersexualization of black women. Study after study show that black girls are routinely perceived as older, less innocent, less deservant of care or protection than their white peers, which directly influences how law enforcement, prosecutors, and social service workers interpret the harms against them.
