Togu Audio Line is a free tape delay plugin that recreates vintage tape machine sounds (like the Pollen Shaffer Phonogene) used by ambient music pioneers Brian Eno and Robert Fripp in their Frippertronics techniques. The plugin features eight delay heads that can be positioned across time, modulated individually, and panned to create immersive psychedelic soundscapes from simple audio loops. Key techniques include using global and individual modulation to create evolving textures, adjusting feedback for rhythmic patterns, and combining with reverb for atmospheric effects. The plugin's visual interface allows users to see and manipulate the time placement of each delay head, making it accessible for creating complex ambient soundscapes.

This FREE Plugin is INSANELY Cool!Added:
What's up YouTube? Today we are looking at a really, really insane free plugin called Togu Audio Line. So this is a tape delay plugin, apparently a recreation of the Pollen Shaffer Phonogene, which is not too far away from what Brian Eno and Robert Fripp were doing with their Frippertronics techniques, you know, lining up multiple tape machines and kind of feeding them back through to each other to create really interesting ways of creating soundscapes. So for those ambient fans out there, I'm sure you know of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. This plugin is probably the easiest way to create those kind of really weird psychedelic delay soundscapes, and I love it. So anyway, let's dive in and have a look. Oh, one thing I want to mention, I saw quite a few people saying that oh, it's not a free plugin, it's not a free plugin. It is, you just need to type in zero over here, and you'll be able to download it for free. Of course, you can also type in whatever price you want if you do want to support the developer. They also have other plugins, which are really, really sick. But this is probably my favorite one. So what we have here is essentially eight delay plugins, and you can kind of assign them in time, like where each of the play heads is grabbing information from and then delaying.
So essentially this circle is your transport. So it'll rotate with the time, >> [music] >> and then each of these delays will grab a little piece of information, then the overall circle then gets a bit of feedback. So whatever you do here with this will feed back over time, and if we pan the play heads in interesting ways, or we pitch them, or do all sorts of weird things like that, that's where you start to create these really immersive kind of soundscapey type things, which you can create out of pretty simple loops. So, you're also able to modulate the time of these. So, over here we have a global modulation system and a mod depth.
And you see when we play, it does these kind of movements, which are crazy psychedelic. I feel like I often just do a tiny bit of that and do it pretty slowly uh to kind of get the full effect cuz sometimes it can be a little bit wild.
But, if you're going for that kind of more alien psychedelic type of sound, maybe you do want that like heavy modulation, right? So, the easiest way to wrap your head around the placement of these play heads is at full spread, they're essentially placed clockwise across the full time spectrum. And then each one can be offset forward and backwards.
I don't love this interface, the fact that there's like a scroll bar here at the bottom. It's not too unintuitive, so it's pretty easy to wrap your head around and and use like in practice, you know? So, we have this overall spread of the time um of these play heads in time, and then we can also change the loop speed. So, that's basically like how quickly it'll loop through the transport that like the main transport of the delay.
>> [music] >> So, slower loops can be really cool to create these kind of rhythmic things.
Say for example, um then we can kind of pan some of the heads left and right to create a kind of rhythmic thing.
Let's do center, right, left, center.
So, it kind of does like almost a ping pong type of effect.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> We can also mute heads uh play heads by turning them on and off here.
>> [music] >> That's also a nice way of kind of creating a rhythmic thing where if for example we do like on off on off off on >> [music] >> more like the traditional multi-tap delay kind of stuff, right?
>> [music] >> I think the true power of this thing in the context of like soundscapes and that kind of thing like I said is is the modulation. So, very slight amounts of this can really open up the sound into like other worlds.
>> [music] >> Let's maybe slow the rate here.
>> [music] [music] >> We can also set We can also set this to individual modulation or what that allows us to do is actually modulate each of these play heads individually rather than applying movement to the full thing. And this can get really interesting because you can have like different movements on different taps, right? So, for example, let's just target the center ones and say moderate.
Let's set this to like a slow one.
>> [music] >> And so our side channels can be not modulated. They're going to give us like the the raw signal, but our center channel can have some modulation.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> And then with the modulation, if we turn the feedback up, what will happen is it'll play back into itself and apply different modulation on the on the next cycle or the next repeat, right?
>> [music] [music] >> Let's speed up the loop a little bit.
>> [music] [music] >> Having two is good.
Here in in this patch, let's actually give it a bit of attack.
>> [music] >> So it's more like less transienty.
>> [music] [music] >> I'm actually going to use a module here called humanize, and what we can do here is just give it an amount of chance to actually play the note. So this is just going to randomly play the notes in this MIDI pattern.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> I'm going to pitch it up a bit.
>> [music] >> You know what? Let's try this on something like a piano. I think that might be easier to hear like the nuance of it.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Okay, I'm going to turn mix off.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Let me maybe turn the reverb off on this piano.
>> [music] >> Another really cool thing that we have built in here is Okay, each type of head has effects, but it also has a resonator. So, we can impart like a timber of like a pipe onto some of the heads.
>> [music] >> And then the pitch here becomes the pitch of the resonator.
>> [music] >> I obviously sometimes get a bit hectic with the feedback.
So, you just got to tune in the the decay a little bit.
Let's solo this.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Okay, let's try it with some reverb again. Oops.
Yeah, it's pretty dangerous if you have the feedback quite high and you stop playing with the time.
It locks in that feedback and kind of starts looping.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> What I like to do is filter some of the top end out cuz there's a bit of clicking and stuff. I think it's just due to like the way that it's recreated.
It's kind of like based on a vintage design, which is obviously not flawless.
Um so, I'm going to use a bit of filter to filter out a bit of the top end clickiness and combine this with the Dawesome Sounds of Life SOL reverb. Such a good combination.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> I'm going to try this SOL [music] reverb before Takht-i-Sulaiman.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> There's also a randomized button, but this goes crazy sometimes cuz it randomizes all of the parameters. So, sometimes it gets a bit hectic with like the feedback and that kind of thing. So, watch out with this, but it can be a really cool way of quickly creating these weird and wonderful psychedelic textures.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> That's so good though. How cool is that?
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> As you can see, lots of sound design fun to be had and it's crazy that this is free. I've also forgot to mention that there are presets. They just don't come in the actual download for the EXE file or if you're on Mac, you know, the PKG or whatever it is.
Um, you actually download those separately and then you can install that that way. Um, I just forgot to install uh the presets into the correct folder, but you do it is a preset system so you can kind of go wild, randomize a bunch of stuff here, save the preset or there are some presets to get started from, but I feel like one of the coolest things about this is just how easy it is to kind of like place the sounds because you can kind of see 1 2 3 4, pan left right. If you want to offset it, you can do that. Or just randomizing it is often really cool psychedelic textures and good results.
So, yeah.
>> [music] >> Cool, I think that's about it for today.
I hope you guys enjoyed that. Let me know what you think in the comments. Big shout out to the developer. I'm not going to try to pronounce it, but you can see over here where you can grab it or you can just search for Tug Fronan on Google and you'll most likely hit the results. Also, just put a link in the video description. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed that. Let me know what you think in the comments. If you haven't yet, please consider hitting that like button and subscribing to the channel.
I'll see you guys next time. Cheers.
