The video elegantly frames language acquisition not as a mere skill, but as an ontological expansion of one's perceived reality. It successfully bridges the gap between Wittgenstein’s abstract philosophy and the practical necessity of broadening our cognitive horizons.

this is your sign to learn a new languageHinzugefügt:
Knowing one language just isn't enough.
As a human being on this earth, there's just so much of existence that is left inaccessible. The meaning of lyrics, a conversation on a train, poetry, dreams.
To remain only speaking one language feels like an affront to basic humanity.
And I'm not alone in this thought. The famous philosopher Ludik Vickinstein was equally concerned with language, but on a much deeper level. For Vidkinstein, language isn't some sort of dry mirror of our thoughts, nor is it an objective reflection of some essential reality.
Instead, Vickinstein had a more nuanced idea of what language really is. As he stated, the limits of my language means the limits of my world. What does this mean? Here, he's arguing that rather than thought itself, language is the logic of our thought.
And the greater our capacity for language, the larger our world becomes.
Our world in simple terms is made up of facts. And language is comprised of prepositions that represent those facts.
In other words, language acts as a representational map. That which we cannot think about lies beyond this map.
It is out of our linguistic capture. And so our capacity for language dictates our experience of existence itself.
Let's take the example of two people that are looking at the same forest.
Person A has about 20 to 30 words that he can use to describe the fact that it is a forest. Plants, trees, green, dirt, and so on. Person B is an ecologist and has over 1,000 specific names for different plants, animals, seasons.
According to Vickinstein, these people, while looking at the same space, would not be seeing the same forest. Instead, person B has a far more complex logical map. They can distinguish and categorize between far more things than person A.
They can see more, engage more deeply and profoundly, and inhabit the same terrain with a greater sense of being than person A. The limits of their world, at least the world of the forest, is much broader.
In following Bickinstein's logic, to learn a new language means possessing multiple different maps for the same terrain. Have you ever walked through a park and noticed the sunlight gently filtering through the trees? The Japanese have a word for this, Komai.
Have you ever encountered something so cute that you just wanted to squeeze it?
Telog has a word for this feeling, giggle. And have you ever felt a sense of despair and spiritual anguish?
Russians will use the term Tosska. Is it less of a despair and more of a nostalgic yearning? The Portuguese might use the term Saud.
With English as one of the most popular languages, it's unlikely that you're going to feel lost in communication traveling to any main destinations. But what about when you go off the beaten path? When you go to places that are going to be less familiar with foreign tourists? For the film that we're planning to make this summer in Trieste, Italy, we're working really hard to understand and communicate in Italian.
So, we're better able to collaborate with our Italian crew and collaborators.
That's why I'm really grateful that today we are partnered with Rosetta Stone, a trusted and reliable source for language learning. Rosetta Stone is a language learning application and program that helps you learn a new language naturally through visuals, real life conversations, and pronunciation practice. It uses a dynamic immersion approach. This means that instead of just wrote memorization or translation, you'll be using visuals, context, clues, and repetition. These are the same strategies that you would be using when you were a kid and you're learning your native language. Rosetta Stone also has true speech recognition technology. This means that you'll be getting immediate feedback on your pronunciation. You practice your pronunciation alongside real life native speakers, meaning that you can train your voice and your ears at the same time. If you're serious about learning a new language, I can't think of a better approach than using Rosetta Stone. Rather than spending all of your time on useless games that don't really have any bearing on reality, Rosetta Stone actually fits into your real life day-to-day. With just 10-minute lessons, you can learn anywhere at any time. And also, if you use our exclusive link, you can get access to all 25 language programs that Rosetta Stone offers. How interesting is it that one's inner and outer world could expand as soon as they find just the right word? What was once a background detail, an afterthought, can suddenly flash in one's mind in an instant. And this goes just beyond words. The logical space of a language could also change how one relates to the world itself. Did you just break your mother's fine china?
Some languages might spare you, structuring their logic around events and circumstances. The vase broke rather than agency. I broke the vase.
Perhaps most importantly, Vickinstein would note that language learning is far from a private event. Instead, language is a publicly shared and ever evolving expression, allowing us greater insight into the interiority of the other.
Communicating with someone can be seen as a bit of a game, like catch. You don't need to perfectly know what they're thinking to catch the ball. You just need to both know that you're following the same rules. To learn another language is to become familiar with new rules, expanding your capacity to play these games of connection whenever and wherever.
In a world that has become increasingly more alienated, it is perhaps a saving grace that we don't need to look into another soul to find some point of connection. We just need to know that we're following the same rules. In short, language is a bit like a stereoscope increasing the depth of our experience as humans. We may all be looking at the same space but holding the capacity to play by different rules, think differently, and through this see things differently. Languages expand our limits on the world itself, allowing us to cultivate a deeper sense of interiority, of feeling, and of connection.
I think of the hundreds of studies that identify the basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness, and competence as being primarily important in mental health and flourishing. Learning a language covers all of these bases. It provides us with a sense of meaning and mastery, allowing us to navigate different situations and engage in different forms of culture, whether it be Arabic poetry or Italian cinema. It allows us to connect more, to relate to others by playing the same game. And perhaps most of all, it frees us up from one way of seeing. It expands our capacity to navigate the world and offers us the chance to journey through reality with more than one map. Is there anything else that could increase your capacity as a human being more than learning a new language?
I think the question of whether one should learn a language should maybe be replaced by another far more simple one.
What's keeping you from starting now?
