This is the most unique state park I’ve ever seen! #geography

[00:00:00]Did you know that the smallest state park in all of Kansas is actually only 5 acres, yet holds some of the most unique natural formations in the entire Midwest? Welcome to Mushroom Rock State Park. Tucked away right off the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway in the Smoky Hills of Ellsworth County, this is a true hidden gem of the High Plains. And it's recognized as one of the eight wonders of Kansas geography.

[00:00:24]What you're looking at are natural Dakota sandstone concretions, similar to the ones that were found in Rock City.

[00:00:31]Back in the Cretaceous period, this area was covered by an inland sea.

[00:00:35]Circulating groundwater deposited a tough calcium carbonate cement into the sand, while the other softer rock beneath eventually eroded away. These hardened spheres were left perched on top of the narrow stems, creating these massive gravity-defying formations. The largest one here, known as Pulpit Rock, is an incredible 27 ft across. Long before it became a state park in 1965, these giant stone mushrooms stood as vital landmarks and meeting places on the open frontier for Native Americans, early pioneers, and legendary figures like Kit Carson and John C. [00:01:10]It's a quick, free stop on a county road and a chance to walk right up and touch a piece of incredible Kansas history.

[00:01:17]And this is definitely an amazing, very quick stop. You can walk from one side of the park to the other in a brief amount of time, but these are so unique.

[00:01:25]Um there's one here that's actually known as Devil's Bake Oven, just because of its uh its shape and because [music] you can actually fit through it. Um this is just such a great place.
