[00:00:03]His family say he was shot, dismembered, and set on fire. His mother found out on Mother's Day.

[00:00:09]And much of the national press has barely noticed. Michael Veazey Rumpf, known to friends and family as Mark, was last seen on the 6th of May this year getting into a black Nissan at a petrol station in Eufaula, Alabama. When he did not return to his grandmother's home that evening, his family grew worried.

[00:00:28]They reported him missing the following day. What came next is a damning account of a community left entirely on their own. According to Mark's mother, Yolanda Wynn, the Eufaula Police Department provided no meaningful assistance in those early days. So, the family organized their own search.

[00:00:47]12 volunteers, ATVs, drones, and a hound dog. They walked those woods in the rain over Mother's Day weekend, desperately hoping to find him alive. On the 11th of May, they found him, or rather what was left of him. Family members say he had been shot, dismembered, and set on fire.

[00:01:07]A search party member described the scene as something out of the worst horror film she had ever seen. Police confirmed the remains were so badly damaged that a formal identification could not be made at the scene. Mark had recently earned his GED. He was preparing to start welding school. By every account, he was funny, full of life, and working hard to build a future. He was 18 years old. As of the 14th of May, no arrests have been made.

[00:01:39]The Eufaula Police Department confirmed the investigation is, in their words, active and ongoing. His father, Marcus Rumpf, said he is dealing with it the best he can. His mother wants justice for everyone responsible to face consequences for what was done to her son. This is a story about a young black man failed by the systems that should have protected him and now at risk of being forgotten by a national media cycle that too often moves on.
