Modern Westerns can effectively adapt traditional genre conventions to contemporary settings by replacing frontier elements with modern equivalents (horses with pickup trucks, saloons with diners, sheriffs with Texas Rangers) while maintaining core themes of brotherhood, land, violence, and the struggle against systemic oppression, as demonstrated in Hell or High Water where the brothers' bank robbery represents a desperate response to economic injustice rather than traditional outlaw behavior.

Why Hell or High Water Is the Perfect Modern WesternAdded:
Every frame you just watched told the same story.
Hell or High Water tells it again.
This time, the villain doesn't carry a gun.
And the hero doesn't wear a badge.
>> [music] >> Hero, outlaw, law.
The horse became an IROC-Z.
>> [laughter] >> The saloon became a diner.
The sheriff became a Texas Ranger.
>> They have video. Same deal all the way around.
The robber became a bank.
Lucky guy.
Everything all right? Two brothers robbing the bank that's about to take everything Good morning.
from their family.
Using the bank's own money to stop it.
>> Stop the car! Set in an America that learned the best way to rob someone.
Satisfies both the reverse mortgage loan and the and the back taxes that we paid on.
Go chase that money. Just because you asked [music and singing] me This is Hell or High Water.
Let's get into it.
>> Let them all call me a fool.
Things are all right >> [music] >> between me and you.
>> [singing] >> That's [music] all it matters in our wild.
Yeah.
Toby Howard is the younger brother.
The one with the plan.
What the gun on the counter? You trying to get us killed?
>> I seen him at some old bank. We seen him one place. That's it.
Divorced. Come in.
Where's your brother? Two sons he barely sees. I don't know.
The family ranch is 2 weeks [music] from foreclosure.
And there's oil under that land.
Enough to change everything.
All right. Well, I'll I'll get that faxed over here turning by the end of the week. It is the end of the week. I want to watch you do it. The plan is simple.
Drawers only. Small bills.
Nothing over a 20.
No bundles. Just loose [music] cash. Got off with just under 7,000. Took the drawer money.
20s and under. Only loose bills. No ring back. Nope. Smart. Hit the branches early before their staff.
Launder it through a casino.
Then write a check back to Texas Midland Bank. Using the bank's own money to do it.
You boys know how rich you're going to be?
There's a moment at the diner.
I don't know anything yet.
Toby asks why he agreed to do it.
Why in the hell did you agree to do it?
Cuz you asked, little brother.
You may not agree with what they're doing.
But you understand why. Fax number is on the card.
How much you making on this deal?
Not near as much as I'm risking.
Why do anything? The brothers ask Billy Rayburn why he's doing this for them.
You know, they loan the least they could. Just enough to keep your mama poor on a guaranteed return.
His answer tells you everything the bank did and everything the plan means.
>> There's no way to trace funds from a casino.
All right. once you get the checks to the bank trust is untouchable.
Tanner Howard is the older brother.
>> 39 years of life prison record [music] >> 10 in jail You turn left where I turn right, it'll be okay. No future mapped out.
>> [music] >> Nothing left to fight for except his little brother.
Toby called him. Whose land is this?
Tanner showed up. Jeremy Tracker?
Will you let me stay here in exchange for shooting coyotes?
No questions. No conditions.
Two grown men same broken [music] house.
[ __ ] >> [music] >> One building something for the generation after him.
>> May be hearing a lot of things about me and one who already knows what it'll cost.
Be [singing and music] broken After a while you stop seeing [music] it as a crime.
That's what this film does better than most anything else.
It makes you forget who the bad guy is.
Hands up. [ __ ] IT OFF.
WE'RE ALLOWED TO KILL A COMANCHE'S LITTLE BROTHER.
Riding where we please with the whole of Texas hunting ourselves Watch out Tanner moves through danger like a man who already decided fear wasn't worth carrying.
Every scene Tanner walks into Don't chase me, Chief.
the temperature in that room changes.
Lords of the plains?
Lords of nothing now.
You know what that makes me?
An enemy. No.
It makes me a Comanche.
Oh, yeah?
When [music] the guy at the gas station pulls the gun out >> Not so [ __ ] tough now, are you, [ __ ] he doesn't even flinch.
Every risk Toby's plan creates Still good. Tanner absorbs it. Is this your first rodeo?
He grew up in a house with domestic violence. Drunk father, beaten mother.
Damn sure, man. One day Tanner had enough.
I understood.
I watched her fighting and shot that son of a [ __ ] [ __ ] you! Did his time.
Came out harder than he went in.
Yet he still decided [music] to come when Toby asked.
The last job was wrong from the moment they pulled up.
Too big, too busy.
>> ON THE [ __ ] GROUND!
GET ON THE [ __ ] GROUND!
YOUNG LADIES, GET ON THE [ __ ] GROUND!
[screaming] NOW! FOR the first time in the whole film Don't stand up!
the plan stops working.
What was supposed to be clean becomes a firefight.
And somewhere in that chaos Toby takes a bullet. Hold your head.
Get the bag.
When Toby gets shot Tanner doesn't panic. Everything in him locks in.
Unless you want to be a black mark on your sons' lives, I need you mountain lion me.
You hear me?
Most men run from a fight they can't win.
Tanner ain't most men.
>> Before it's over there's a moment. Let's go.
Just the two of them. Love you, Toby.
No plan, no next move.
Damn it.
You already know what it means. Love you, too.
Hey, Tob.
Go [ __ ] yourself. Go [ __ ] yourself.
>> [laughter] >> Can you answer your own phone?
I'm driving. You're just sitting there twiddling your fat fingers.
The man hunting them is just as interesting as the men running.
Well, you always dressed like me. Marcus Hamilton is 2 weeks from mandatory retirement.
>> How much?
$200. He's been a Texas Ranger his whole adult life. Isn't it getting late for you? He figures out the brothers faster than the FBI ever would.
>> one. This old boy is out of his mind.
God, I love West Texas. Because he's been doing it long enough to know exactly what desperate men do. If you can stay sober long enough knowing how you engines like the bottle.
His banter with Alberto Parker You Rangers are an odd bunch. No.
Just him. is the film's comic relief.
Alberto.
Will you please follow me? With these two in the chase Don't Just keep your mouth shut and just listen to what I'm saying.
>> becomes something older than itself.
Give me an Indian hook. Come on.
>> [crying] >> This boy is going to go down. Let's get some giddy up music going on there.
Oh, please not that.
When Tanner kills [music] Alberto, everything changes.
Now, it isn't just a case.
>> [music] >> This one he takes personally.
There's a scene, a cowboy herding cattle across a highway.
>> [music] >> That cowboy you see on horseback is Taylor Sheridan. I'm in a scene with Jeff Bridges. [music] It should be as an actor this great thing and I'm literally like, what have I done? The man who wrote this film.
In those 90 seconds, he tells you everything [music] this film is about.
A way of life disappearing in real time.
And nobody coming to help.
>> [music] >> Know who I am?
I'm the man who killed your brother.
Watch what happens when two men who understand the old code sit across from each other with nothing left to prove.
You shot my partner 300 yd away cuz you liked it and that made me feel good.
Doesn't give you a resolution.
Tanner is gone.
Alberto is gone.
The land is saved.
And these two men are left holding everything that can't be undone. No.
That's the Western tradition.
>> It's like a disease. The guns go quiet.
Passed it from generation to generation.
It becomes a sickness. That's what it is.
But not my boys.
Not anymore.
>> [music] >> Same bones as every other Western that came before it.
Just set in [music] an America where the most dangerous thing isn't the man with the gun.
It's the man with the contract. [music] Ready to be done with this.
You'll never be done with it no matter what. It's going to haunt you so long for the rest of your days.
But you won't be alone. It'll haunt me, too.
If you stop by, maybe I'll give you peace. I maybe.
Maybe I'll give it to you.
