Doctor Reacts To Dr. Stone 1x12: The Science Behind Sulfuric Acid Is INSANE!!
Added:I don't accept this.
>> What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the channel. Tonight we are taking on another episode of Dr. Stone episode 12.
Getting excited.
>> [laughter] >> 10 billion percent excited for this one.
I am Dr. Going to say Dr. [laughter] Stone.
I'm Dr. Tad.
>> I am Dr. Todd.
>> I'm Alicia.
>> And thank you for being here as we watch Dr. Stone.
>> Too many doctors in the room.
>> I know. That's >> [laughter] >> That's okay.
>> Well, hey guys. Thanks for being here.
For those of you who keep coming back week after week. We promise we're going to try eventually to get two episodes out a week as we as we can try to get caught up on some of these. So, thank you for bearing with us. And if you are new here, please consider hitting that subscribe button and help us keep growing. I'm excited to see what happens as we go hunt for some sulfuric acid >> Yeah.
>> so we can make sulfur antibiotics. The last episode ended with Senku talking about crafting a silver spear, >> Yeah.
>> which I think we'll see in this episode has a double purpose as a like indicator.
>> Like to search for something?
>> Yeah, like a sensor almost basically for sulfur. Are you ready?
>> Yep.
>> Are you excited?
>> Yeah, 10 billion percent.
>> Okay. I was going to I was just making sure. All right, guys. Let's go ahead and jump in.
>> All right.
>> So, this hair-looking stuff's going to turn into silver? That's bad.
>> Did they already find it?
>> No.
>> Oh, it's silver. That's right. Okay.
>> So [snorts] cool. You're going to make my silver spear with that, huh? Hey, that reminds me. Don't you have an awesome golden spear?
>> [laughter] >> I REMEMBER NOW. YOU DON'T have one.
>> That's how his tongue changes like every time they show him.
>> You need to move your arms, NOT YOUR MOUTH.
>> [laughter] >> WHY ARE WE ONLY MAKING a silver spear?
>> Because it's essential to our quest to acquire the most dangerous material.
>> [screaming] >> So shiny.
>> The fact is I didn't make that for you.
Come on. We [music] need to get moving.
Ginro, your job today is to be the team's bodyguard.
>> Whoa!
I think Ginro would like that.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm Ginro the brave sir.
>> Wait a sec. I come here all the time to get water from these hot springs.
>> Yeah.
>> The silver spear acts as a sensor.
>> Mhm.
>> You'll need to notice if that silver begins to turn black.
>> you mean?
>> If that happens, you'll be dead in seconds.
>> What?
>> joking.
>> Oh, okay.
>> That turns black, you need to get away in 0.1 seconds. That's the signal for all of us to start [music] running. The enemy you're guarding us from kill us if we make just one mistake.
>> So >> It's the greatest hurdle in making silver drugs. We could die very easily.
>> Yeah. So, he's right. So, hydrogen sulfide, which is the gas emitted, is very dangerous. It actually it's interesting cuz it sort of has this rotten egg smell.
>> Okay.
>> And yeah, if you smell it, it doesn't necessarily mean like, oh hey, you're going to be dead in seconds. But, what is dangerous about it is that the chemical uh that can actually destroy like olfactory nerves. And so, you could actually like the smell could go away and it actually be more dangerous.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah, because it destroys those neurons.
And of course, what he's saying here, if it reacts to this, then obviously we are in a dangerous area.
>> Yes.
>> So, yes, it is very dangerous. People would would die here. Um and we maybe at the end we'll kind of go into it a little bit more depending on how much they actually tell us in this episode, but I am curious. I mean, I don't want to go into it if they're going to talk about it.
>> There isn't even a single fish in this river. Nothing but green chatsubomi gokemoss.
>> Everything's okay.
>> [laughter] >> He's nervous.
>> Yeah.
>> Still okay? Looking good.
Still okay.
>> [laughter] >> Wimp.
>> Then switch places with me and hand over the silver spear.
>> Not a chance.
>> Finally arrived at the source of our most killer component for the drug.
>> Absolutely beautiful.
Divine.
>> Mhm.
>> [screaming] [laughter] >> Focus.
>> Something wrong, Senku? Is this not it, >> [music] >> or what?
>> No, this is it.
>> Is Senku nervous?
>> Maybe.
>> Poison gases that form here, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide, are heavier than air. They settle in low spots like this one.
>> That's what the silver spear's supposed to warn us about.
>> Silver reacts with hydrogen sulfide. It blackens immediately.
>> He's like a trance.
>> Oh, yeah.
Uh-oh.
>> GET AWAY, GINRO!
>> [screaming] >> OH.
>> IT'S OKAY, YOU'RE SAFE. There's no one there.
>> Nothing with this head, maybe.
>> Yeah.
>> The bird just melted.
>> It's got something that was discovered by an alchemist [music] way back in the 8th century, but during my time, it served as the foundation for a wide variety of chemical industries.
>> Mhm.
Perhaps the most like important chemical compound.
>> Sulfuric acid.
>> And we can't make the medicine for Ruri without this dangerous stuff?
>> to need it for all types of chemistry.
It's essential for further advancement.
>> Mhm.
>> The man in front knelt down for a moment.
>> Professor, is something the matter?
>> Poor guy was dead.
>> Oh.
>> He knelt right into an invisible cloud of hydrogen sulfide. Humans don't stand a chance when Mother Nature wants us dead.
>> [snorts] >> Can be ridiculously fast, but it [music] won't make a difference.
>> I have to save Ruri, no matter what.
>> There's still a way for us to do this. I know just the thing. We'll make gas masks.
>> Okay, I was I was thinking some kind of filter.
>> The only way to fight a chemical enemy is by using some [music] chemistry of our own. Now, there's no telling how effective this is going to be.
>> [laughter] >> And with this experiment, we can't simply rely on trial and error because error equals death.
But you won't be going on this mission anymore. You'll be staying here.
>> What? Where's this coming from?
>> Just shut up and listen to me.
>> If Senku doesn't make it, we need you.
>> Then who's going to be left to save Ruri? Every human dies eventually. Their knowledge can go on living.
I hope you're ready, Chrome, [music] cuz I'm going to pass all the science I know down to you. Hope 2 million years of it.
>> Right now.
>> It's too soon. Quit talking like I'm replacing you or something. THAT'S JUST ASKING FOR TROUBLE.
>> [laughter] >> WELL, isn't that sweet? You really care about me. What are you, my girlfriend?
>> [laughter] >> We don't want Ruri to die. We got to go through that cloud of poison gas and get us some sulfuric acid.
>> Mhm.
>> Now, if both of us end up [music] kicking the bucket together, then in a flash, all knowledge of science will disappear from the face of the earth.
>> And Tsukasa wins.
>> Yeah.
>> If that's THE CASE, I'M NOT GOING TO LISTEN to you.
>> Oh.
>> So, if you happen [music] to croak out there, it's just GOING TO BE GAME OVER FOR SCIENCE. YOU'RE COMING BACK ALIVE.
THERE'S A 10 BILLION PERCENT CHANCE.
>> [laughter] >> I mean, the plan doesn't make sense.
>> on his own?
>> I hope not.
>> Are you just trying [music] to protect me like I'm your kid or something? Don't you dare patronize me.
>> [laughter] >> We'll have a better chance for success if you and I tag team to save each other if we run into trouble. Am I wrong?
>> If we run into trouble, we'll be dead from the poison gas.
>> Yeah.
>> There's spies in [music] the Tsukasa Empire, right? They're putting everything on the line, you know. Your lives are in each other's hands. If I'm your friend, it means I'm not higher or lower than you.
Cuz I've got your back, and you've got mine, right?
>> Chrome's the best ride or die.
>> Yeah.
>> This means more work for us cuz now [music] we've got to make another gas mask.
>> [laughter] >> I've got your back, Chrome. Your life is in my hands.
>> That's right, and your life's in my hands.
>> [snorts] >> The priestess's most important duty, the hundred tales.
>> Ruri's days on this earth are dwindling rapidly. When Ruri dies, you must take her place.
>> to accept that.
>> So, she could feel him parallel there.
>> Yeah.
>> If I'm in a position to take over the role of priestess, Ruri will have no reason to keep living. [music] I'll just have to make father hate me. I'll be the wild daughter.
>> Aw. [snorts] >> You and I are more alike than you think.
And to be honest, if my sister were to marry a man like you, it would make everyone in the village really happy.
>> [snorts] >> If everything goes according to our plan, Ruri will be marrying either Kinro or Ginro. She and I do look alike.
[music] Would you like me to be your wife as consolation?
>> What? [screaming] You're nothing like her. Ruri's a lady.
>> But you are a gorilla.
>> [laughter] >> I was waiting for that.
>> Yeah.
>> What's that about, anyway? You got a crush on me or something?
>> Oh my god.
>> Not a chance. So, don't say crazy stuff like that.
>> I mean, okay.
>> to end up together?
>> Well, here's the thing, like I know obviously he has eyes for Ruri, but I'm like, "Bro, don't fumble this."
>> I know.
>> Like, Kohaku is awesome.
>> Yeah.
>> And well, I mean, I maybe he's intimidated by the fact that she could clearly take him in a fight.
>> Yeah, but he would she would protect him.
>> Yeah, while he figures out the science.
>> Exactly. It's a good team. Yeah.
>> First, we steam roast some bamboo.
>> Oh, you can really use glass to start a fire?
>> Add potassium carbonate, extracted from ash. We also use this in our ramen making. This is activated [music] charcoal mixed with potassium carbonate.
>> Oh, to absorb the toxins.
>> Mhm. See, you're learning.
>> I knew that.
>> [snorts] >> I knew charcoal does that.
>> Oh, but but but yeah, so but that's also why it's used medicinally. So it's you I I thought maybe you were talking about that.
>> No, I was talking about like >> So you use activated charcoal in the case of toxic ingestion. So you can use it to neutralize toxic ingestion in the gut. So okay, but yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Same same concept.
>> We're going to get over the greatest hurdle together. We'll come home victorious carrying jars of sulfuric acid.
>> [snorts] >> Hell yeah.
>> The fairy of the spring put A CURSE ON ME. MY SILVER spear turned black and that bird melted. So there is no way that I'm ever going back there again.
>> What happened at the spring wasn't a curse. It's science. Rub the black sulfuric acid sludge with an alkaline base and it'll turn silver again.
>> AH, THE POISON GAS SENSOR'S BACK.
>> AW, poor guy was dead.
>> Literally do or die this time.
>> Mhm.
>> One breath can mean instant death.
>> Huh?
>> [laughter] >> If you stand around huffing and puffing in fear, the gas mask won't be able to keep up with purifying the air. It's a ridiculously simple concept.
>> Senku, I'm just not as ballsy as you are.
>> Uh-oh.
>> I mean, do they not think that it's scary? One wrong move and you're dead.
YOU KNOW, I HATE it when PEOPLE PULL THAT STUFF.
>> [snorts] >> I SUPPOSE YOU FEEL like a loser compared [music] to them because you're so weak.
>> No, I don't.
>> [snorts] >> Spitting facts.
>> You want my opinion? I don't think you're the slightest bit weak. Fear is the secret to a long life and that should be pretty convincing coming from an old fogey like [music] me.
>> Mhm.
>> And I guarantee you those boys are scared, too. There's not a soul out there that's immune to fear.
>> True. Do you remember Very different show, but you remember when Lord Eddard Stark from Game of Thrones said, "The only time a man can be brave is when he isn't in fear."
>> I don't remember that.
>> that to his son. Like episode 1.
>> Yeah.
>> That was stuck with me cuz it's true.
>> The only thing I want is to save my sister's life.
>> It would seem that I let myself get a little carried away and made another one of these.
>> [laughter] [snorts] >> Oh, he's going to be the MVP of this episode.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, no.
>> The hose ON YOUR GAS MASK IS MELTING and it's ABOUT TO BURST OPEN.
THAT was close. Good thing we came out here as a team.
>> Oh, no.
>> Mhm.
I don't accept this.
>> Saitama's trying like crazy to catch up to me. Don't bother, man. There's no chance in hell. It's such a tiny misstep.
I can at least STILL SAVE RURI.
>> TOLD YA.
>> OH, YEAH.
>> YEAH, take that, shadow demon.
>> You got TO CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, GENOS. YOUR GAS MASK CAN'T KEEP UP WITH YOU.
>> IT CAN'T. THE POISON gas is going to kill me. Am I going to die right now?
>> Yeah.
>> I know that you can overcome your fear.
THAT'S HOW YOU GOT OUT THIS FAR IN THE FIRST PLACE, ISN'T IT?
And think with this.
No matter how powerful nature may be, it doesn't have a heart to listen to or a brain to reason with.
>> [snorts] >> I'M GENOS, THE BODYGUARD. I'LL OVERCOME MY FEAR WITH MY HEAD AND MY [screaming] HEART.
>> OH.
>> There you go.
>> We've got a bad tag team with me and Senku the scientist.
>> And me the bodyguard.
>> Heck yeah.
>> Together we overcame the greatest hurdle so far.
>> SULFURIC ACID ACQUIRED.
>> [laughter] >> That moved me 2 mm.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, who is it?
>> Okay. All right. That was an exciting way to end an episode.
>> Yeah.
>> I don't I was genuinely nervous for Chrome there cuz I'm like >> Yeah, I was like [clears throat] is this the story end?
>> Yeah, I'm like no, how? Obviously super stoked here and you had to have glass to be able to contain the sulfuric acid and not have it like erode. Like we mentioned last episode, the glass is inert and so it will not react with the sulfuric acid. What I would What I wanted to touch on though is so they passed all those hot springs and there is likely like I mean there's certainly going to be sulfur gases in this area even in like in these hot springs because so volcano beds if you will are commonplace for this. Now, you can have hot springs that are not like heated by volcanoes.
>> Okay.
>> And that's like I can't remember it's like has something to do with it's all geothermal but something to do with like heating up like if if water like seeps out enough into like the the earth's crust then it heats up and then you can develop these say hot springs. So like not all hot springs are like sulfuric springs. But and you can by the way like there are sulfuric springs that people swim in and >> Okay.
>> and >> That was going to be my question.
>> Yeah, like but these are generally places that like are known to be safe and like our levels are monitored. Like if you go to like national parks and things like that have some of these hot springs, they are well ventilated. Like that's really the the issue with it is if you have like poorly ventilated hot springs with sulfuric gases, those are deadly. But like just because yeah, just cuz it's a sulfuric spring doesn't necessarily mean like that you could swim but you would but I I be very careful. Like if you were hiking in the wilderness and you came across like hot springs, you would want to be a little bit cautious, I suppose. But again, like if it's in a like a common touristy area or something like that, you're you're going to be fine. But anyway, that's so cuz it So I I guess the point of that was to say like you don't have to fear all hot springs cuz they could be I've never actually been in one, but sounds like probably pretty relaxing. Like a hot tub.
>> We've been to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
>> Yeah, which is pretty cool place. But obviously, these are naturally heated by Mother Nature. So we've now acquired Sefiro Cassis. I don't know when we finally see this antibiotic. I feel like it's got to be pretty close. And then of course, the million-dollar question is will this work on Rory? I hope so. Seems like that's the way it should go, but we'll see. All right. Well, hey, this was a fun episode. I don't know Did you have anything else you want to touch on?
All right. Well, I'm excited 10 billion percent excited to jump into the next one. Thanks for being here for this one.
Please consider coming back for the next one. And until next time, take care.
>> See you.
>> I am Dr. Todd.
