When repairing corroded vehicle panels, the process involves cutting out damaged sections, creating replacement pieces from matching material, and welding them into place using tack welds to hold position before full welding; galvanized panels require careful handling as they resist welding, and proper PPE including masks must be worn when grinding rusty metal to prevent respiratory issues.

Welding an 80s icon! πAdded:
Funny how one job never stays as one job, right? You start off with thinking, "I'll just sort this one thing out." And before you know it, you're halfway down the rabbit hole wondering, "How did I even get there?" I'm sure you guys must have been there before. One thing uncovers another, then another, and suddenly what started out simple turns into a full-on mission. And that is where we are at, full-on mission mode.
But we are slowly getting this MK2 golf sorted. So come along for the journey and see where this week takes us. I'm Rick and this is Rick's Rust.
Rick Rust.
>> Last week, we made this big hole in the bottom of the car. But with the new section cut out to size and all ready to weld in, it's time to fill that big hole up. So, with both sections cleaned up and weld through primer on them, we can start getting it clamped into position and get a few tacks to hold it where we want it.
You could try to play, but you're never going to be me. Look the other way. What I'm doing ain't easy. Bloody hands stain from the people who deceive me. Bloody hands break through the chains. Go free me. Looking for change, looking for pain. Pulling a M, pushing a train. I'll never stop. Stick to a lane. Pick up the pieces and go rearrange. I'll be the best above all the rest. Put me to the test. Expect nothing less. You check cuz I'm chest. What's happening next? He got the venom, a tangible weapon, no coming in second. This life is a lesson. He got a new engine from pain. It's a blessing.
New focus, no guessing. Just hold an obsession. All in his possession. You got their attention. I leave an impression and take a redemption. Just kill no discretion. Your mind is a weapon. 111 is never progression. You could try to play, but you're never going to be me. Look the other way. What I'm doing ain't easy. Bloody ass and from the people who deceive me. Bloody ass and break through the chains. Go free me. People like she move feet hurt it easy. Don't want to be fast asleep when they see me.
Ready for a fight. Believe me. When they try to change, you can say no.
Okay, so we got that welded in and it was fighting me. Uh them galvecoated panels really don't enjoy to be welded.
I should have maybe taken a bit more off it, but heyo, it's in there and it's solid. On a side note, it was my wedding anniversary at the weekend. And my beautiful wife bought me a ball pin hammer, so you know she's a keeper when you get one of these boys, don't you?
She's a good lass, I tell you. Right, that's that ground back and I'm happy with the end result. I think it's come out decent. And um if you haven't noticed, we've gone a bit fancy. We've got some new microphones. So, I'm going to give these a go. See if the sound quality is any better on the videos. So, let me know in the comments if it sounds any better or not. I obviously won't know until I edit the video, but hopefully it'll be better sound quality.
Right, let's have a look at this chassis rail section on the middle of the floor.
We'll see how involved this is going to be. So, I'm not exactly sure what's the best way of tackling this one. I'm thinking just grinding these welds back and just slowly making my way into the repair. Um, we'll have a better understanding once we we start grinding it. So, I think I best get the grinder out. Right, here we go again, guys.
>> Talking at the bar walking.
Baby, why won't you talk to me?
Can't get your tongue when we're talking about what I need.
So, I wasn't really sure what to expect when cutting into that. Um, I would say it's not too bad. I guess it could have been worse. I'll give you boys a closer look. So, I don't think it's actually that bad. I've to I've taken the bung out here because this piece will need cutting cuz it's rusty around here. And basically, that's the the uh part of what the uh seat mounts to. So, that's the seat base there. And that's part of the the mount for the seat base. And that's where the uh floor was spot welded to that seat base. So all we have to do really is make one big section that sits in that full piece there. Plug welds onto here. A little bit of a curve in it here to make up the um chassis leg piece on the inside. And then we've got that chassis leg piece to put onto here.
So I think maybe looks more daunting than it actually is. So, um I think first things to do is to clean up uh the surrounding area and then start um getting some cardboard cut out and um made to size and we'll take it from there. I've cleaned that section all back and the uh the little lip that was coming down from where the seat mounted um once I'd um ground back the rust, it was just the material was too thin. So, I've actually welded a new strip into there um to give it a bit of strength.
Um, these were the pieces that um we took off. I didn't actually show you on on that last clip. Um, yeah. And I'm guessing it would have just been a umote failure at some point cuz you got to think at one point these cars weren't worth anything. So, it would just be a quick bodgege job to get it through anote. So, you can't be too harsh on the person that did the the previous repair.
But um yeah, when you look now, it's it's uh very crude repair, isn't it? Um but yeah, for tonight, I'm I'm done. Um time to get inside and get a shower. Uh we got quite a bit done. Um so yeah, we'll see you again tomorrow.
We got a lot of comments last week in regards to what your first car was, which was good to hear. Uh there was some very interesting cars and we even had a guy that had a um Peugeot 106 as his first car. So there we go. I knew there'd be somebody out there.
The fortune lady told my mama before I saw the sun.
>> Okay, with this cut out to size, we now just need to bend it into position and get it tacked in. If this is the type of content that you enjoy to watch, then remember to subscribe and like the video. And um also we now have the hype button. I'm not exactly sure what that hype button does, but if you see it there, press it cuz I'm sure it can only be good things.
>> Cheers, guys.
>> But you know I'm Yeah, you know I'm a midnight man.
Everybody knows.
So, I've foolishly underestimated how awkward this panel is to do. Um, the more I get into it, yeah, the the bends are really hard to get on it. So currently at the minute I'm thinking if I can so we can get this front section um something like so I'm thinking if I tack this front section in um and then we can manipulate the rest of the panel because this back section and all this here we're a mile away and it's obviously because it it mounts onto this and then bends over and it you're just trying to go the opposite way to what the panel wants to go. So, we'll tack it in and we'll see if that helps us out.
Now that we've had this panel in and we've somewhat massaged it into place.
Um, what we can do now is we can get it mocked up and we can start trimming it down and getting it fitting spot on cuz it is slightly overly big in quite a few areas. Right, let's do it.
So, after what feels like an eternity of bending this and trimming it and getting it to where we want it, it's actually now fitting fairly decent. It will still need need tacking in and pushing into place. But now what I want to concentrate my efforts on is where the circular pit bit for the bung is.
There's like a a um raised lip here. So I'm going to try to work this into the metal um just to replicate the other side. Um not sure how I'm going to do it yet, but that is what we're going to try and do next. So I've borrowed an old flange from work and um yeah, this should it's a very similar size. So, we should be able to work it against this.
That's the plan.
Thinking about this, boys. Um, I don't know why I don't just bead roll it. I don't know why I'm messing about doing it like this. bead roller would leave a nicer finish than what this is going to.
Right, start again.
We've got the bead roller set up with what I think is the right die. And then what I like to do before I go and actually run it through the actual piece of steel that you've you've got all to shape and everything is just to do a little test sample. And then that way we know it's either going to be right or not right. I think this should hopefully we'll we'll test it. It should be something like So this is the profile we're after and this is the profile that we got and it's very close. I think we just need it just backing off a little bit cuz it's almost made it too much of a tighter bend whereas this is uh got more of a looser bend in it. So, we'll just adjust it back and try it again. So, this is another piece.
And yeah, I think that's I think that's spot on at that.
Uh I'm a bit croaky today, which is annoying. Um it's my own fault. It's from when I was grinding that um that section out last night because it was so rusty. I never put a mask on. Um what an idiot. And yeah, I breathed all that rust in and then this morning, bit of a dodgy throat from breathing it all in.
Uh wear your PPE, guys. Uh rust gets you. Right, let's get this rolled.
So now with this curve in it or this uh raised part, it's come out good. It looks decent. Um, this little edge piece here, this needs bending over um to replicate what what's going on in the car. But I think we'll be able to do this just over the the anvil.
Who's this beautiful lady?
So, I think this is about as a good a fit as I'm going to get with it. Um, I've messed about with it quite a bit and uh yeah, I think it'll be okay.
We've got the uh plug welds in there and it goes something like yay.
But we're gonna have to still bend it up and move it around to get it in. But we'll get it tacked in.
Oh, midnight highway.
Shining just like sun.
Why don't you hear me wonder?
We've got that tacked in. Um, not perfect, but I think it's acceptable. Um the gap here at the back uh ended up being quite big, but obviously I didn't know that until I'd got it all stretched over. I've sort of ground the the plug welds away and I've sort of had a go at grinding some of the other welds away.
Um same as here, but yeah, obviously it all needs fully welding in and then grinding back. My attention has been drawn to this section at the back. I'm really wanting to chop out this outer skin and just see what the the inner skin's like because if the inner skin's all rotten, then chances are we've got we're going to have to set this full thing out or repair that section. I'll get the grinder and we'll uh we'll cut that out and see what's underneath there. See what it's got for us.
Oo.
Fair well, darling.
Ain't coming back no more.
Why don't you hear me wonder?
Ooh.
Ooh, >> so we are happy little campers. That's actually turned out quite good. So, chop that outer skin of this piece off. And inside is not bad at all. Just a real little bit of surface rust. And it's really thick plate, so we can clean that back and treat it. Um, while I was at it, I also took this little section out here just because it looks previously as though it's been uh jacked up on that point and it's creased the metal and then caused a little bit of rust. I'm guessing where the paint's cracked. Um, but yeah, so it's good to go. We're good to make a piece up for this, make a piece for this, the bit we bought to put onto the end, and then we can weld up this full piece and we can get the full thing completed. But that will not be happening today because I am done for today. But um we'll have a go again tomorrow. So I'll meet you here again tomorrow. And as promised, we're back again tomorrow. Um Saturday morning.
Binn and got me hair chopped this morning. So I'm um ready to go. Um I found some plate which was the same as the piece that we'd uh chopped off in that last clip. Um so this is the same thickness. So we've got that uh to make that up. But before we do that, I think what we'll do is concentrate on getting that plate that we've already got in.
Get that fully welded up. And then that can be ticked off the box. Right. Come on. Let's get it done.
Yeah. I'm so fresh like the morning.
Mouth wide open like the yawning. Every time they see me, they in G- this is too far. Homie, I feel too alive. You can't see me like a luminite. You can see me like a luminite. But I'm shining so bright, so bright. Don't come and try to sh I'm in this light now. Give me a beat and I control it like a maestro. Ladies on a mission, they be trying to get me wiped up. Shy, wait a minute. Can't tell if I like you. Got to make sure you know how to shake and shake it like >> So that welded like absolute poop. Um it was being awful. I I think it's just because of all the um underfloor matting that we've got in there and it's like a bit me matting and it was just Yeah, it was just awful. Um I don't know if it got caught on camera but to the end there my um it actually set my torch on fire a bit dropped down and landed on the switch of me torch. Um, but yeah, not not the best in the world. And the amount of heat I got into some parts of that to try to get it to weld. It's going to have distorted it. Uh, I'll get the grinder out and I'll grind it back and then touch up any bits that need welding and then I'll bring you guys back and you can have a look at the finished result on it. Um, right. I'll report back in a second. Right, guys.
So, what was one second for you was probably about an hour of my life grinding that back and filling in the little holes and blah blah blah. Yeah, it was uh it was not good. But I think it looks decent. Half decent anyway.
It's not brilliant. It's not awful. It's in between. Um but I think that's as far as we're going to go this week. Um so, thank you very much for subscribing and thanks for liking and commenting. Keep them coming. It's great. But until next week, boys. I'll see you later.
