Kensington prostitute couldn't control her bowel movementAdded:
How you doing today? Good. How are you?
I'm good. What's your name? Kayla.
Kayla, nice to meet you.
>> Nice to meet you. How old are you? 35.
35, okay.
Where are you from? Williamsport, PA.
Okay. Um, tell me your story. How did you end up here in Kensington?
Um, kind of left back home running, you know, kind of running from the law. I was running um, from, you know, important things that I was supposed to be taking care of, taking courts. Um, I came down with my boyfriend and he [music] also was on the run. Uh, so we were using drugs back home and we just, we knew that this was an easy place to get everything and it was just convenient, so that's how I ended up here.
Okay.
How long you've been out here?
About 5 years. 5 years, wow.
What's the worst thing you've seen out here? The worst thing that you could be like, "Oh my goodness, I cannot believe that."
Um, probably, probably the stories of the, like the killings that we hear.
Lately, how close it is. Like, I've heard about a lot of girls found laying on the train tracks, being found, you know, like their heads chopped off, Are you serious?
>> eaten to death. Oh, yeah.
And it's just a, it's a matter of, you know, just like a a mile from us sometimes. There was a shooting the other day like on the, the street that I was like one over from. That was crazy.
Crazy. Yeah, that is crazy. What's the worst thing that's happened to you personally?
Out here, any like, uh, injuries or anything like that? Oh, yeah. Um, probably the worst was, uh, I was punched in my face in my car through a manager of pizza shop on Frankford Avenue.
Um This was recently? Uh this was my second my second year here and it was because um I didn't even know the guy.
Uh it was because there was a gentleman that I had met who kind of became a little obsessed with me and um he got mad because I I wouldn't give myself up to him. So, I had went up to the pizza shop one day with my buddy and we were just going to grab a slice, you know, cuz it was good and it was cheap.
So, didn't even get to get out of the car.
We pull up and the manager is pounding on my passenger side window telling us to open the door, get out and I said, "Do not unlock the door." And he ended up opening it anyway because he started to like pound on my glass and he he yanked my friend out and the manager came in and he said, "Leave."
And I said, "What do you mean? Who are you?" I didn't even know who he was still at that time.
And uh it was because of the guy who was obsessed with me, obviously had said something to him and he said, "Leave." again and I said, "I'm not going to leave." And right after that he punched me in my eye right in front of the pizza shop. In my face twice while I was still like in drive in my car.
It was it was crazy. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
What's the worst street down here that you do not recommend anyone to go to?
You say stay away. Do not go there. It's too dangerous.
I would just say this whole area in general. Probably Kensington, you know, it's it's you know, you'll see it all.
Is it more dangerous during the day or at night?
Definitely night. How so? How so?
Um I I just think it's uh you know, it start outside obviously and like people just yeah, have easier access of not being seen and People can hide, right?
>> Oh, absolutely.
How do you make your money out here?
Um first couple years, uh family. I was, you know, I was blessed to have family help me. Um and then we had first come down during the the pandemic, you know, with the PUA and the stimulus and all that. So, we had that um to our advantage and then after that, my family had helped for a while.
And then after that, you know, they kind of like eased back helping so much. So, then it resulted to uh boosting out of stores um and uh you know, doing doing dates a couple of times.
It's not fun and I don't recommend it.
And it's not something that I you know, enjoy doing at all.
Um but, you know, obviously my my addiction was taking me there.
It's sad. What's What's your uh drug of choice?
Uh currently is uh dope.
Uh crack.
Pretty much pretty much anything I can get my hands on really. It's just uh it's just the Day by day.
>> satisfaction of being high and just feeling not so It sucks. I hate it.
What's your typical day like from morning to night time? Can you kind of tell me how it is when you get up to night time? Um What do you do?
Well, being on being on dope is a struggle. Uh being sick every day.
If you're a user, you totally understand what I'm saying. Um the withdraw is is very intense. It It almost is kind of close to death.
And when you're a couple days in without your without your drug of choice, you get hot and cold sweats.
You shake.
You have restless legs.
You vomit. You end up like Sometimes people [ __ ] themselves. I've I've been there and done that and it's just it's not fun. It's a struggle every day to try to stay well. How often does that happen?
Um for me it happens a lot.
Usually um I mean when I do a bag it only lasts me maybe maybe an hour or so and then like I start feeling sick again. My nose will start running and like my eyes start to tear up and then I start sweating.
Now, I don't want you to take this the wrong way. Um do you ever when that happens do you ever think about like um maybe using I don't know if they have like adult diapers or anything like that or anything that like you know so you won't like when you go like it won't go all over the place or you just don't need to think about that? Um no, I don't I don't let myself get to that point. Um I usually get up and try to do something about it that that you know what I mean?
Like I don't try to get myself there.
But it's happened. Um once we didn't have anything. We were just This is back when like in the beginning kind of when we didn't have money one week and um we were just stuck. We had no gas. We had no no resources for anything and you know, it was hard to be able to pull myself out of my vehicle. Um But yeah, it's just it's not a fun time.
It wasn't a fun time. Before using, what goals did you have for yourself? What did you want to be?
Like growing up what did you want to be before uh you started using? Was there anything in particular?
Uh before I started using like my heavier drug back home I I had a a career, you know, in in home health care and being a mom, obviously.
Yeah, but I've done in home health care for about 10 years.
I just always I've enjoyed helping other people and cuz I know I'm going to be old one day, you know, and I want somebody that's going to have a good heart like I have, you know, that will help want to take care of them.
Hey, you seem like a very nice person.
You're a very pretty person and uh Yeah, well, no no problem. You're welcome and hopefully, you know, I always come down here and I always want to make sure that you guys leave this place, you know what I mean, and do something with your lives, you know what I mean, get clean and become a better person, you know.
>> That's what I'm trying to do.
And I know you can do it. You just just got to got to try try a little harder. I know the Is that true that the drug controls your mind? So, you know, like sometimes you just you want to leave, but it keeps bringing you back like this place makes people stay get stuck.
It grabs you. I'm not going to lie. Like when I first come down here, like I I had told my man, you know, I was like, you know, we we knew we had a responsibilities and and a life to get back to, but it it it's hard. It's very very hard when when when you get to this point, you know what I mean? My my boyfriend was a 15 15-year dope user and he was on the needle and when I first got with him, I didn't even do dope.
And then he ended up introducing it to me and one day I asked him, I was just like, you know, what is it about the needle that you love so much? I said, sometimes sometimes I feel like you love the needle more than you love myself, you know what I mean, like me. And I was like, [ __ ] it, you know what I mean?
You know, shoot me up, too. I want to know what you love so much about it, and I was stuck on the needle for almost 3 years, and I pulled myself off of it.
I've been clean from the needle for a year and a half.
And I mean, that's that's a step for me, definitely. Um but, it's it's not where I want to be, but I have to take baby steps right now, and uh just recently, I just got myself put on uh Suboxone, and I'm getting ready to [music] take a Sublocade shot next week.
So, How's that working for you?
>> Um Suboxone is working good, actually. I haven't um I haven't used uh dope probably in like a month and a half now.
Um but, I guess right now the thing that I'm just afraid of going back to is the uh the legal matters at home because, you know, what happened.
You know, warrants and everything. It's scary, you know? And nobody wants to go home to somebody in jail, you know what I'm saying?
So, I'm going to try to like take steps and you know, put myself, you know, through detox, um just because you know, and go through rehab, and then you know, reach out to the the What were your warrants for?
Um back home, um it's for child support. Okay. Um and then uh another one, um it was uh we ended up getting pulled over when I was still with my boyfriend before he got locked up. Uh Mhm. They pulled us over for a taillight being out, and they ended up doing a search because they felt that his eyes were um very dilated, and um when he asked him to step out of the car, uh a dope bag was laying there on the the floor, and that prompted the search, so he ended up getting paraphernalia charges.
So. So, do you currently have a boyfriend at this moment? I I honestly don't know. I haven't spoke to him since he went to jail, but um I've I've I've followed him, you know, through everything, you know, like looking him up online and I found out he was in Camp Hill now. They also say when it's two users and one's trying to get out, it's kind of hard to the to come clean because the the other partner will will you, you know, like string you back in. Is that true? Yeah.
Did you have you ever picked a needle off the ground and used it? Never.
Never.
Have you ever uh went into the trash can and ate any food or anything like that in the trash can?
No.
Um I think the most I did was open up a little bit of water in a water bottle.
You know, something like something like that cuz I was really thirsty.
What do you uh eat around here?
Um they have uh people come out here in Kensington and they like set up tables and they give out bags. Sometimes they walk around with a cart in their hand and like sandwiches and water and like little snacks for us.
It's I'm I'm blessed that these people are out here, you know. They do that cuz you know, obviously they they probably went through addiction at one point in their life and they understand and they just want to try to help us.
I've heard stories that if you bring food down here and give it to uh homeless people or people on addiction, you can get fined or is that not really accurate?
Um I'm I'm not sure. I know they they don't like it. They've been trying to shut a couple places down that have like the resources for us, like Prevention Point. I heard last year when the new mayor came in, she's been trying to shut Prevention Point down.
Yeah, it's like a it's like a safe place for us and they're very hopeful there. They care. How far is that from here?
Um just up the street. Not too far at all.
Have you ever been robbed out here?
Most every night when I first come down.
So how what exactly do they do? Do they They come up to you and just snatch something from you or wait till you fall asleep or >> Yeah, they they wait till you fall asleep and they creep on you. And last thing, I literally just had my backpack right here taken from me. Uh I woke up to all my stuff laid out on the ground and they was picked through what they wanted from it and they just left the rest of my stuff on the ground.
Wow.
What makes you happy out here in Kensington? Name one thing that makes you happy.
Nothing.
Nothing.
It's not a happy place.
It's not a happy place, right?
That's why I'm trying to get back to me.
I really have been working on it.
I know you can do it. You know that, right? Yeah.
I believe in you.
Thank you.
No problem. My last question to you is, if you could look right here in the camera, if your family or friends were to watch this, is there anything you would like to say to them right now?
This is your chance.
And that one here.
One more time? That one here.
Ooh.
No, you got it. Just take your time. You got it. I mean, you know, this is Yeah.
I'm sorry.
No, you're good. Just just just tell them, you know, they need sometimes family and friends they see this and you know, they just want to know how you're doing, you know? They love you and they care about you, you know?
Especially Shani, you know, we're just See, you know, it's it's important for them to see that know that their mother is still out and alive, you know?
You have to say I was sorry.
And I'll get back to them when I can.
Anybody in particular you want to say something to? Mom, dad?
I just want to know that I love them.
And my mom.
And my dad.
And my son.
I miss him so much.
I was a good mom.
You were a really good mom.
This stuff.
I lost myself.
I need to get back to it. It was important.
And I know you can do it. You know that, right? Yeah.
And I want to thank you for your time. Is it okay if I can upload this video to YouTube to raise awareness of what's going on in Kensington? Yes. Thank you very much. God bless.
