Domitian, Roman Emperor from 81-96 AD, was worshipped as a god in Ephesus where a massive temple was built in his honor, yet after his assassination, the Senate condemned his memory through damnatio memoriae, destroying his statues and erasing his name from inscriptions. This demonstrates that attempts to erase a historical figure's legacy often paradoxically ensure their immortality, as the very act of suppression becomes part of their enduring story.

DOMITIAN | The Emperor Who Was Erased From History ๐๏ธโ๏ธAdded:
The face you are looking at right now once belonged to one of the most powerful men on earth. The people of Ephesus once worshiped him like a god.
But later those same people shattered his statues, erased his name from stone and burned his legacy into the night. His name was Domission. In 81 AD, dimmission became emperor of Rome and very quickly he transformed into the absolute ruler of the empire. He was powerful, ruthless and he ruled through fear. Being called emperor was not enough for him. Domision wanted something greater. He wanted to be seen as divine. Inside his palace, fear spread everywhere. Senators, generals, even his closest allies lived in fear of him. Because dimmission trusted no one, he believed enemies were hiding everywhere. But in Ephesus, things were different. One of the greatest cities of Roman Asia built a massive temple in his honor. The Temple of Domian, a gigantic monument filled with towering marble columns, statues, and imperial ceremonies.
Here, the people of Ephesus honored him like a living god. And Domian loved it because he did not only want to rule Rome, he wanted to rule the minds of men. But every throne built on fear slowly creates hatred beneath it.
As the years passed, dimmission became even more paranoid. Executions increased. Opponents disappeared. Rome itself was changing into a world ruled by terror. Then in 96 AD, everything collapsed.
Domissian was assassinated inside his own palace. And when news of his death spread across the empire, the Roman Senate condemned his memory. The Romans had a name for this punishment. Damnasio Memoriali, the destruction of a man's memory. And Ephesus, the city that once glorified him, turned against him. His statues were destroyed. His name was carved away from inscriptions, and the great temple of Domian fell into destruction and flames. The man who once stood like a god before the people was now nothing more than broken marble scattered across the ground. But the irony is this. They tried to erase him from history. Yet we still speak his name today. Because sometimes even hatred can make a man immortal.
