Worth The Effort... HUGE Transformation!Added:
Oh, welcome back everybody. N months ago when I bought this whopper of a shed, it was a neglected old dusty agricultural barn. And today is a beauty. I envisioned it being like this with the OSB walls, painted steels, insulated and painted roof, beautiful mezzanine, and a lovely epoxy resin floor. And that is what we're doing this week.
>> If you hadn't quite guessed, John is very excited. But I do feel it's my duty to perhaps manage expectations a little because this floor is 50 years old. And despite our best efforts last week where we spent an entire week grinding, pressure washing, grinding, hoovering over and over again, the floor is still most certainly not perfect. We've got lots of divots in it still. There's lots of big oil stains as well. Um, this section here we're pretty sure is where they ran out of concrete pouring the middle section and have tried to just patch it in. And I think that some of these cracks speak for themselves, but this is going to be a DIY and it is going to save us a lot of money. So, first job on the agenda this week is of course more prep and we are addressing our cracks first. Starting with our shallow ones. Now, as we ground the floor last week, we actually unearthed a lot more hairline cracks than we thought we had. So, we got the grinder on them and we've just re vgrooved them out a little bit to give the crack filler a better space to fill.
>> The only thing with anything like this is it's a minefield of knowing what product to go for. So, we've partnered with the resin coat for this one because they are DIY friendly and that much so that they put QR codes on their tins with all the instructions for jester read. The ultimate pro and con though for epoxy resin is the same thing and that is time because it goes off mega quick which is good for prepping stuff but at the same time it goes off quick so you have to go like Billy.
>> Yeah. So, we're using the fast cure epoxy crack repair filler. Uh, and that only has a 15minute pot life or a 20 minute working life. So, once I mix this, we have to get cracking.
goes on super easy this stuff. And I don't think we was under as much pressure as we first thought. So Jess hasn't cracked under the pressure just yet.
>> You started it.
>> It's going to be a week of crack jokes.
Now this stuff, like John said, it is really easy. You don't need to prime or anything. You just need to make sure that you've got a clean crack. I did make that joke last week. Um, it also is supposed to set harder than concrete as well.
>> Yeah. And what we found is try overfill it as well because we've underfilled a few and then when it settles in it leaves a little bit of a valley. So >> have to go back and up a bit. So make it a bit bulgy.
>> The repair we did on the front bar last week though has come out pretty good.
But now we got to deal with the whopper cracks.
>> The whopper cracks. So that's this one here. And then also, you saw that we raed out our expansion joint because our pad is so old. It had separated, gone a bit wonky. So, we've straightened it up.
And then we're going to need to refill that with something to hold it together.
But what happens typically when you put mortar products in against dried concrete because the concrete is so dry, it sucks all the water out of the newly laid stuff that you've put it in, and it causes it to shrink and suck away from the side that you're actually trying to join it to. So, if you're using like a normal cement based product, you'd use something like SPR that's water-based.
But we don't want any water-based products with epoxy. So, we are using this tack coat for that job, which is an adhesive primer, and it will help the next stage to stick to it like >> glue.
>> I was going to say something a bit wrong there.
>> If you know, you know. This is another two-part product because pretty much all the products we're going to be using over the next few days are either two or sometimes three parts. Is there a three-part one?
>> There is a three-part one. That's the next stage.
>> But what we found from just doing that one, because it's only about 14° today, the pot life on this says it's 20 minutes. But because it's a bit cooler, we seem to be getting a bit longer anyway. So, >> we'll find out with this one anyway. Cuz we've ground so much off of this pad though. Nearly everywhere. way back to aggregate. And as we're putting this tack coat on, it's bringing up all the stone at the top. And it makes me think of having like a posh polished concrete floor. I don't think that this slab would be up to that mind.
>> Well, I think if I had a brand new slab, I don't know whether I'd like to just polish it and just have it without like >> just do like a a um clear resin coat.
You mean?
>> Yeah, >> that'd be nice.
Work smarter, not harder.
>> You never like being on your knees, dear. Jess, >> I'm a queen.
Queens don't be on their knees.
>> You're a queen. I'm a king.
>> No, you're the court jester.
Now we wait.
Well, our tack coat is now well and truly tacky. We've had the heater running in here for a couple of hours.
Got it up to 24° to help with the curing time, which means we are ready for the next step. But if you thought we had to be raped for the last lot, this one only has a 10minute pot life. 20 minute working time. But still, we need to get a regal on.
>> Let's crack that whip.
>> It's like a bit of a cake mix, isn't it?
It's like making sand castles.
>> Can you see how long the camera's been rolling? Cuz that'll tell us how long I've got.
>> We've been going 12 minutes. Just 12 minutes.
>> Jesus.
>> Blow in a breeze.
>> We got one side done, but what's in left in the bucket is started to go a bit hard. So, we're going to get rid of that and mix a new batch up. But that tacky stuff, what is it called? Tack coat.
That's like honey. It's so good. It just sticks to this.
>> That is a great description of it actually. Yeah. Unbelievable.
But >> one more to do.
>> What are you doing, woman?
>> No. Do not No, I can do it.
>> I have opened a lot of patrons in my life. This one will not defeat me.
>> 10-minute pot life. 10-minute opening life. Give me that ear.
>> If you open it first though, I'm going to be savage.
>> There you go. Look, >> I loosened it for you.
>> I didn't realize the other one didn't mix. It mixed. You know what I mean?
>> Oh, you didn't see it. Do it. Oh, I did.
I have to mix this bit for 2 minutes first.
>> This is why you have me, darling, because I read the instructions.
>> You would have just chipped it all in a pot and mixed it together, wouldn't you?
Just think though, without me, you wouldn't be 6:00 on a Tuesday night doing a workshop floor.
So, good job. We had an early dinner or I be getting hungry.
Bet you can't see anything there.
Job done. Morning everybody. The good news is because those products have got such a fast curing time, we are ready to rock and roll this morning. And as per usual, John is out before me. But this morning, we find him cleaning his tool that is made for cleaning. Could there be anything more, John? But I got a call from a friend the other night whose son is off on a school trip to Spain this summer. lucky duck. And they wanted some advice on roaming. Now, his local provider wanted £15 for five days away in Spain. So, we went on sale, who are the sponsor of this week's video, and had a little look at the different things that they offer. And we could get 5 GB for $9.99 US, which when you add our 15% discount, brings it down to just £6.38, which is less than half price. We're just scraping off all the excess material on top. So then we don't have to grind that down and create more work for ourselves. But when it comes to the tack coat and this mortar, now I'm not going to lie. When I first saw it, I thought, what on earth is this going to do? And the mortar was almost like a fluffy cake mixtury. Weird really, was it? But >> strange texture.
>> Absolutely brilliant. Where we've put the tack coat on, what we did is we did it inside the crack and then we also came over and you can see where it's actually gripped in. It's unbelievable.
Whereas if that was like a mortar, it would just push off now and over time it would just crack on the edges. So, I'm really confident with that. And if you've never used a resin before, I would say it's like a when you get your toffee apples dipped, it's all like creamy and >> creamy, >> warm and No, it's not creamy, is it? I suppose what >> sticky and uh fluid and then as it sets it then goes rock hard. And that's the same concept. I can't believe you're trying to do a cooking analogy. Pot noodle boy.
>> I've cooked toffee apples before >> when >> when my mom did it. I watched her Granted, I might not be the best cook in the world, but you know what I am the best at? Do it, Jess. Do it.
>> 3D printing money.
>> 3D printing money because we've been on it again. I don't think there's a week that goes by that I don't do some freebie printing and it's absolutely brilliant. So, firstly, I got this little nylon bush made up because from the 9-in grinder to the Hoover, obviously it didn't fit. It's pretty much the same size. So, a little boss that goes up in there. Boss that goes in there nice and snug. And then also remember when I cut the top off of this the other day to get into the corner.
Well, just made a little 3D print up there that screws on there. I do want to put some hinges on at some stage so that flap opens so then I can get into the corners. But it'll do for now, won't it?
Once again, the best thing we have bought in a long time. This cyclone only a ton bag. Well, >> ridiculous.
It's about 5 hours later >> and two of these discs later as well.
Look at the state of it. We've had our money's worth. We've gone through two of these. We went through two of the big discs on the the big >> lot of diamonds got into this floor. Uh John also found apparently he'd forgotten he had it. this little shroud which slides to the side so you can get it up nice and close rather than mutilating the one you had on the 9 in.
>> You have to get one like that for the 9 in grinder. Definitely.
>> But we have now got our expansion joint repaired. And one of the reasons we had to do this wasn't just cuz it had broken all higgledy piggledy, but also because where it's moved over the years, we've used it to sort of level it out cuz there was a slight height difference.
Look at that smooth. Just ignore that hole by there. But the thing we now have to do is making me very nervous because this is beautiful. But it's an expansion joint or a control joint, whatever you want to call it. So, we need to cut a line back in it. So, if it does move again, it moves on that point and actually goes straight.
>> Yeah. Cuz if we didn't put a cut in, basically when it would break, it'd just break chunks out of it. So, I was going to put it uh sorry, put a bit of angle iron along the joint and try and get a real nice straight cut, but where the cut wasn't straight before, I used to go off like that. It won't work. So, I'm going to have to freehand it.
>> Do not mess this up. I will not be happy.
>> I'm hoping what we're going to put in it covers it up because it's nowhere near square. But again, >> squint. It's okay >> again. It's the best job we can do with what we've got. But with how strong it is, Jess thought she'd do a little experiment yesterday.
>> So, since I have been reading the information on this product, this rapid set epoxy repair mortar, >> the fluff, >> it makes a claim on the website that has been fascinating me. And that claim is that it is virtually indestructible.
So, I thought we'd see about it. I made a little mud pie yesterday with the leftover stuff.
>> You can see a couple of bits there. So, that's going to give the game away.
>> I've given it a little test before I came out. But, I'm going to give you my biggest big licks with just a normal hammer. Are we ready? Bearing in mind that this is just in the rubbish ground here and it's as deep as you can see.
Get on.
>> All right. Ready?
Now that is impressive. Not one crack anywhere.
>> Should I get the sledge? Should we try?
Get the sledge. I love stuff like this.
We got that big nasty. I think this stuff's actually designed for filling potholes and stuff. So, it'd be good.
Right. Put your glasses on, boy. Go on.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, that cracked it.
>> That cracked it.
What a rubbish product >> considering it's only that thick.
>> That is impressive.
>> Soft ground. Proper soft ground as well.
>> So good.
>> That is amazing.
>> But from one impressive thing to another. Wait till I show you this.
>> Well, you've already seen this plenty of times, but she's working. We got two new batteries for her and we tested it out the other day and she is a weapon.
Should we show them?
>> We'll show them.
>> The old scrubbers.
>> Look at it, guys.
>> He's a beauty.
Look at that.
>> That is the face of a man who is very pleased with himself.
>> One tank of water does the whole floor.
Now, you're not meant to get this wet before you epoxy like we've told you about 10 times already. But we used this after we ground it last time, and the amount of dirt come out of it was unbelievable. So, >> and we actually rang and spoke to the technical support line that they have at Resin Coat. Actually, that is something that I think is brilliant that they do.
Um, and they said that we would be fine to go over it with the scrubber. It's just that you can't go and like pressure wash it or anything.
>> And not every DIYer has a floor scrubber at home, do they? So, >> so that's probably why they don't put it in the instructions.
>> Let me show you this.
That was a clean tank as well. At least it's more like a iced coffee or a caramel milkshake rather than a chocolate milkshake like when we did it before.
>> Only use 10% of battery as well.
Or the insulation on the shed was well worth doing. 15° difference from outside to inside last night. So the pad should be nice and dry. But you do have to check to make sure it is completely dry.
So firstly, you can use these moisture meters, but they don't reckon they're that good because if you check here, say it's not even reading. Look.
Yeah, that that shows at 6.9%.
But then you can go to another part of the pad. Normally the edges are a bit damper and that reads at 11%. But they reckon these don't give you a true reading. They're brilliant on wood, but not so much for building materials. So, the best way to do it is to get a bit of plastic, tape it down, and then just leave it overnight. And then if you lift it up, and it's a bit condensated under underneath, then it's still too damp.
But by the looks of it in there, it's bone dry. So, we're good to go. We do have one last job we have to do, though, before we can get on with the painting. And that is to deal with these doors because apparently we've got rain coming which is the last thing we want.
And you can see down the side of the doors here you can see daylight through and especially along the bottom. So our solution these door brushes.
We've put a brush on each of the bottom of the doors and then we put two all the way up the side as well. So then any wind and rain can't get in the sides.
And it used to happen where it was a bad storm. It'd hit the bottom of the pad and bounce in. So that will stop that too. But what else it will stop is drafts. And this next bit of information I'm very impressed with. Granted, it cost us about £7,000 in insulation, but I turned the heater off 4 hours ago and it was 20° in here.
Still 20° in here. And it's only 10.3° outside. He has been giving me, oh my god, >> 10.3° outside.
>> Every 15 minutes this morning, I've been getting temperature updates >> and it's 19.2° up in the mezzanine as well. But we've also put some tape along the trunk in on both sides. And this is Jess's genius idea.
>> Thank you very much, my dear. Well, because we have such a musive space to paint in here, we have a lot of tins of paint to use. And to make sure that we put it down evenly so we don't have dry patches and bits where there's too much, I have taped out all the way along here where we should use an entire tin of paint to go across the workshop. So hopefully we'll get it in nice and evenly >> and we're going to get on.
>> Let's smash it.
You do have a few different options for your primer coat, but there's no prizes for guessing why we have gone with the oil tolerant primer. But John has kindly offered to model for you the bits of kit that you need to do the job.
We got a paint roller for all your painting needs. We've got a squeegee for all your squeegeeing needs. And then we got a notch squeegee basically to then squeegee the material and then it leaves a bit behind. Now, all you do need is the roller, but I've seen the pros use these and we're amateurs, but we want to be pros, so we got them anyway. And then also, I've got these shoes. You can buy the Crocs with the spikes in them. And that's what the fancy pros use, but obviously I'm a fancy type pro, aren't I? So, I bought the £10 special ones rather than the 50 50 quid ones.
>> I think they're actually made for airating your lawn.
>> And then all you do is you strap them to your Crocs. So, you can run about doing your job and then of high fashion.
>> Slip them on and away you go. We have got two pairs, one for Jess, but I don't think we want to see Bambi and Ice just yet, do you?
>> This is so satisfying.
But pouring an even wiggly line is a little bit more tricky than I had anticipated. Oh, not put any there.
>> I think the most satisfying bit is the notch squeegee. You notice how you don't hear the roller moving? That's how you know you got plenty on there. If you hear it like this, like you would on a wall, that's when you know you not got enough on there.
Give us a temperature update, Jess.
>> For goodness sake.
>> What is it?
It is 20. No, 21.4.
>> We're getting warmer. What's it outside?
>> Uh 11.8.
>> I'm going to get real perverted soon and start worrying about humidity. I got to understand it first though before I start worrying about it. Have I said how much I love this notch squeegee, Jess?
>> Yes, darling. You've said how much you love your notch squeegee.
>> What is it, Jess? What is it?
>> I think you'd better do it.
>> What is it, people? What is it? Go on.
You got to say it when you're at home now. Just say it. Some bit of kit for the What are we doing?
>> A popsicle together for a long, long time. Time goes by so fast. Baby, it ain't been long enough to get how it be. When I saw you walking down my street, didn't even know your name. But I got a feeling inside of me. Nothing's ever going to be the same. Hey, I'm a model if you know what I mean. And I do my little thing on the catwalk. Come on, do your sexy walk.
>> Yes, I'm being serious.
>> Come on. Give him the best tush wiggle you can do.
Oh yeah, baby. Work it. Work it. Come on.
>> I need >> What?
>> I need a wire heels that everybody keeps sending me.
>> Have I told you how much I love this box?
>> Oh my god. only about 7,822 times.
>> We don't quite know what to do with regards to the heater, but we've got it up on the mezz over there blowing down on number one. I don't know if it's going to make it too hot. We've got to paint the next coat in 12 to 24 hours.
So, if it dries too much, you have to key it up before you paint it again. But then, obviously, we want it to dry so we can go at it first thing. So, hopefully we can get two coats on. I don't know if we're doing the right thing, but we'll see in the morning. Eh, he's on key, but I don't know if it's too much. I think this is where it's like a what's the word where it's all subjective because it feels nice and smooth and doesn't really feel tacky, but I've Googled it and they reckon that the chemical in the actual resin will adhere to it. So, hopefully it does. The good thing is loads of the little low points have been filled by the resin as well.
Should we get a bit of color on?
>> Let's give it a go.
>> Pre-warning here. The alarm went off at 5:00 this morning, so Jess might not be the cheer for this today.
>> My eyes are not quite open yet.
>> You know, we've got up too early when the old alarm off of the side. Oh, the alarm from the security alarms keeps going off telling us that there's an intruder in the yard. Oh, look. It's the notched squeegee. Like we didn't hear about that yesterday. Remission intuition.
Call it what you got feeling.
I've been pacing, trying to take a chance.
>> Just like all the other products we've used so far, the top coat doesn't have a very long pot life once it's mixed. And as this was make or break for the floor and the two weeks of graft we put in to get to this point, we needed to knuckle down and take this task seriously. When Tom met Chris at the age of 19, the prettiest girl that he ever seen. I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste, a flannel for my face.
>> Somebody once told me the world is going to roam me. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed.
She was looking kind of dumb with a finger and a thumb and a shape of an L on his forhead.
>> Oh, you know what would have been a good song for this one?
>> What?
>> My fingertips are holding on to the cracks in our foundations.
Going to do the two step cowboy boogie.
Get a sweetheart and spin out with him.
Do the hole down and get into it.
Woohoo! Take it to the left now and dip.
Lean back. Take a sip. Put your hips in it. Woohoo.
>> Job done.
>> Job done indeed because it's a couple of days later and we have a resin coated floor finished. Apart from one job anyway, but that's a little minor detail. But we've got a second coat on.
We didn't show you it because to be honest, it would have been a bit boring because it was just gray going over gray and you wouldn't really seen anything different. But I'm over the moon how it's come out. If anything, it's filled a lot of the potholes and divots and things like that. We still got loads about. We were never going to get rid of it. But because it's such a thick layer, it is like sort of just sat in all a lot of the divots in it. So >> yeah, it's definitely improved the overall surface. I would say that. But they do say with resin coat that it's like five coats of paint per coat you do. So obviously we've done two coats, which is like doing 10 coats of normal paint over the top.
>> And that's one thing people ask, why are we going for epoxy rather than paint?
Well, I had a brand new slab laid at my old shop. I had it power floated, so there was no contaminants or anything like that, and the paint didn't last too long. So I looked at epoxy flooring and they reckon it's so much more harder wearing not just for workshops but people have it in their homes and all sorts of stuff. So yeah absolutely buzzing with it. So thank you very much for working with us resin coat and they have given us a discount code as well which is resin coat no true blue 15.
>> True blue 15. And that will give you a 15% discount on all their products cuz they don't just do epoxy flooring.
>> Yeah they do paint and all sorts.
You're probably sick of us seeing us mixing in this episode, but Jess did calculate how much we've actually mixed.
I think it was 40 pots, was it?
>> 40 parts of the primer and paint and then the crack repair and the rapid reset mortar and now the joint sealant.
>> So, that's the job we need to do for the last one is because this wonky line here we need to fill up. Like usual, you have a part A and part B. And what I like about this stuff is this only goes A, B, and C. You don't have to go through the alphabet much more.
>> My god.
>> Keeps it simple, doesn't it?
>> But I've bought some of these empty cartridges. What you can do is you can run tape down either side of the line and then just put this stuff in with a spatula and then pull the tape off. But we're going to try it like this with an empty cartridge and do it nice and neat.
>> Also, you need a straight line to do it like that. And uh we don't have a straight line, >> right? Let's give it a crack. Try and get it in the tube.
>> Let's give it a crack. Oh, you're still bringing them out even this late on.
>> All right.
>> I don't think that's going in.
>> What time did you get up this morning?
>> Um, >> wasn't the crack of dawn, was it?
>> Oh my god. John. John, stop moving it.
>> I might have to get the stronger gun cuz it's quite thick stuff.
>> Yeah, that's the baby gun, isn't it?
>> Yeah. I need a big gun.
>> Did you cut the top off the thing? Does it need doing like a normal one?
>> Surely not. I don't know. But >> lucky you've got me about boy.
>> Helps if you cut the tip off.
>> Now it's going to go everywhere because you've got pressure on it. Oh, for goodness sake. You splirted everywhere.
>> Get your splirt in the crack.
>> That's better.
>> There we go. Right.
>> Change of plan. We've had to tape it up.
I'm still glad we're using the silicon gun to get right into the joint and pump it in. basically. But we did it over the that side on the front and it made a bit of a mess. So we had to be quick sharpish to tape up this line to get it on. But we did that on purpose so we could show you what it's actually like.
>> Would you like to see our blue pizza special? This is how the line has come up and you can barely even see it. So I am very pleased with that finish.
>> Yeah. And I think they do this as well.
Like it's not just gray. So, whatever color you want to do your floor, if you do it pink, red, they'll do all the colors to what they do. So, >> yeah. So, and the way we're doing it is, as you can see, John is pumping it down into the gap. And then I follow along behind him, and I just smooth it all out. And then you need to get the tape.
And this is what it says in the instructions as well. You get your tape, and then you peel it away from the joint like that. And you get a lovely, nice, crisp, clean finish. Well, overall I'm over the moon with how it came out.
Couldn't have gone any better. So, we're going to leave you there for this week.
Don't forget about the say link in the description and we'll see you next week when the next project starts.
