UK Friend Visits Sweden’s Oldest Cafe

Recently, a friend from the UK came to visit me. We went on some beautiful hikes and even visited one of the oldest coffee shops in Sweden. Hope you enjoy.

[00:03:43]It was great to visit Siktuna again, but this time in sunny weather with everything in bloom. My friend absolutely loved it here. Sikjuna is actually Sweden's oldest town, dating back to around the year 980.

[00:03:57]And it's full of charm with its colorful wooden houses, little shops, and views over Lake Meer. I'm sorry if I mispronounced that. It's such a peaceful place to walk around, and you can even spot ancient runstones scattered throughout the town, which makes it feel really special.

[00:04:14]This is Sikjuna's Tant Brun Cafe Stuga, one of Sweden's oldest cafes located in Siktuna's oldest wooden house, possibly dating back to the late 1600s. It's famous worldwide for its authentic old-fashioned atmosphere and homemade freshly baked bread and pastries from their own bakery. You can enjoy traditional Swedish fica indoors or in their lovely shady garden. And the building was carefully restored in the late 1960s, preserving its historic charm for visitors to experience today. I really love this place.

[00:05:17]>> This is a run stone by the old St. Mary's Church ruin in Siktuna. It was discovered in 1956 and says Anund had this stone raised after himself while he was still alive which was pretty unusual for its time. The carvings were made by the rune master foot in the mid 11th century.

[00:06:55]St. Mary's Church is Suna's oldest building, standing since the 1230s.

[00:07:00]It was the region's first brick church and the only medieval one to survive the reformation. While the monastery around it was demolished by the king, this church stayed standing, preserving 700 years of history. Inside, the 13th century architecture remains almost untouched. Featuring original pillars and medieval frescos that were hidden for centuries, it's a rare mix of romanesque and Gothic styles that still function as an active parish today.
