The Last Black Congressman Before Jim Crow Locked the Door

[00:00:00]In 1901, North Carolina sent a message to black America, and it was brutal.

[00:00:04]George Henry White was the last black congressman from North Carolina for almost 100 years. When he stood in Congress for the final time, he already knew what was happening. White supremacy campaigns were spreading across the South. Black voters were being terrorized. Election laws were changing.

[00:00:22]And the same state that once sent black men to Congress was shutting that door on purpose. George Henry White looked directly at Congress and said, "This is perhaps the Negro's temporary farewell to the American Congress." Temporary. It lasted until 1992, 91 years. One speech predicted an entire century of political eraser. And most people in North Carolina never hear his name once in school. The craziest part, he wasn't talking about losing fairly. He was talking about a system being rebuilt to make sure black political power disappeared. and it worked.
