For years, the story stayed in the background, but when tensions with Spain grew, Jenkins appeared before British Parliament. He brought the severed ear with him, preserved in a jar. British politicians used it as a proof that Spain was humiliating British sailors and insulting the British Empire. What began as one sailor's injury became a national outrage. In 1739, Britain declared war on Spain. So, one ear did not truly cause the war, but it gave Britain the perfect excuse to fight one.
