Added:You think you know what a planet looks like. In this video, we go through the weirdest planets ever discovered, the diamond planet. In 2025, the James Webb Space Telescope identified something that had never been seen before. A rapidly spinning dead star, the collapsed core of something that used to be a sun. The planet's atmosphere is made almost entirely of helium and carbon. No oxygen, no nitrogen, no hydrogen to speak of, just helium and carbon. Nobody has ever seen a planet with an atmosphere like this. Not once, not anywhere. And under the immense pressure of this planet's interior, the carbon does something remarkable. It crystallizes. Scientists believe the interior may be composed largely of diamond compressed carbon crystals floating upward through the interior, mixing into the helium atmosphere above.
A planet literally raining diamonds from the inside out. The gravity of the pulsar it orbits is so extreme that it has stretched the planet into a lemon shape and it completes a full orbit in under 8 hours. No known theory of planet formation fully explains how this object exists. The burning ice planet. Most planets have ice on their cold parts and heat on their warm parts. GJ436b does not care about that. Located 33 lighty years from Earth, GJ436b is a Neptunized planet orbiting so close to its star that its surface temperature reaches 439°, hot enough to vaporize most materials we consider solid on Earth. And yet the planet is covered in ice. Not despite the heat. Because of the gravity, the planet's gravitational field is so immense that it compresses the trace in its atmosphere into solid ice. The ice doesn't melt. The pressure holds it in a solid state. Scientists call it hot ice.
A phase of water that doesn't exist anywhere on Earth because we don't have the pressures required to create it. A planet that is simultaneously burning and frozen. The planet hotter than most stars. Most planets are cold, even the hot ones. Mercury, Venus are nothing compared to a star. Kelt 9b broke that rule completely. Located 670 light years away. Kelt 9b is a gas giant that orbits its star so closely that its surface temperature reaches 4,300°.
For context, the surface of our sun is around 5,500° C.
At those temperatures, molecules don't just break down. They get ripped apart at the atomic level. If you could somehow approach this planet, you wouldn't be approaching something that looks like a planet. You'd be approaching something that glows like a dying star, something that pulses with its own terrible light. A year on Kelt 9, B lasts 36 hours. The planet is so close to its star that it orbits in less than two Earth days. The cotton candy planet. This planet is a gas giant located 1,200 lightyear from Earth. It is about 1 and a half times the size of Jupiter and it has the density of cotton candy. Jupiter is already considered a relatively low density planet. WP193b is five times less dense than Jupiter.
If you could find an ocean large enough to put it in, it would float. The planet is so puffed up and expanded that its own gravity can barely hold its atmosphere together. Scientists aren't entirely sure how it got this way. The leading theory is that the stars radiation is heating the atmosphere from below, causing it to expand far beyond what normal physics would allow. It is the universe's most implausible balloon.

Located 880 lighty years away, this planet is a gas giant with dayside temperatures exceeding 2,800° C. At those temperatures, metals don't just melt. They evaporate. Aluminum oxide vaporizes and rises into the upper atmosphere. It condenses back into solid crystals. A rain of gemstones falling from the sky on the dark side of this planet. literal rubies and sapphires condensing from the atmosphere.
The planet also shreds molecules apart on its dayside. Water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, all torn into their individual atoms. The water world, 48 light years from Earth, there is a planet that scientists named using a word that means large body of water. This planet is a super earth roughly 2 and a half times the diameter of our planet and about seven times its mass. Not water like our oceans, which covers 71% of Earth's surface. It's not a planet with water on it. It is a planet made of water.
Scientists believe the entire interior of this world is water in exotic states that don't exist anywhere on Earth. At the pressures inside this planet, water behaves in ways we have never observed.

Saturn's rings are one of the most beautiful structures in our solar system. Stretching across 280,000 km, this planet has rings 640 times larger.
Located 434 light years away, J1407b has a ring system so enormous that if it replaced Saturn in our solar system, its rings would be visible from Earth with the naked eye. The rings span half the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
Within the ring system, there is a large gap. Scientists believe this gap was carved out by a moon. A moon large enough to be a Mars-ized planet in its own right. The naked planet. Most gas giants look like Jupiter or Saturn.
Surrounded by thick layers of atmosphere. This planet used to be one of those. Located 730 lighty years away, it's now something different, something unique. It is a planet with no atmosphere. Not because it never had one, because it lost one. Scientists believe something stripped it away.
Maybe the intense radiation from its nearby star blasted the atmosphere off over billions of years. It is the first time we have ever directly seen the inside of a gas giant.
