Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid-vapor-air mixture can be ignited by an external flame or spark; fire point is the temperature at which the mixture burns continuously; and auto ignition temperature is the temperature at which the mixture ignites spontaneously without external ignition. These three parameters are determined through standardized laboratory tests where liquids are heated and tested with ignition sources. For a flash point-related fire to occur, all three conditions must be met simultaneously: adequate vapor concentration, sufficient temperature, and an ignition source. In practice, thermal fluid leaks are difficult to ignite unless they accumulate in poorly ventilated areas, and heat transfer fluids are operated well below their auto ignition temperatures for safety.
