This video compares two of the greatest television series ever made—Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul—across seven categories: storytelling, characters, performances, writing, cinematography, impact, and consistency. Breaking Bad wins in storytelling (immediate, high-stakes narrative), impact (cultural phenomenon with iconic moments like Ozymandias), and overall iconic status. Better Call Saul wins in characters (Jimmy McGill's detailed transformation into Saul Goodman), performances (Bob Odenkirk's subtle six-season arc), writing (more consistent quality throughout), cinematography (more experimental and refined), and consistency (no mid-series lulls). While Breaking Bad is the more iconic show that people instantly recognize as better, Better Call Saul edges it out in pure craft, consistency, and depth.

Breaking Bad vs Better Call SaulAdded:
Breaking Bad versus Better Call Saul.
Two of the greatest TV shows ever made.
Same universe, same creators, >> [music] >> same attention to detail. But which one is actually better? Let's do this properly. Quick round rules. We're judging on storytelling, [music] characters, performances, writing, cinematography, impact, and consistency.
Seven rounds, clear winner each time.
[music] Just before we get into it, remember if you like this video, give it a like. Drop in the comments below exactly which show you think is better, and subscribe for more content just like this. Let's [music] go. Round one, storytelling. Breaking Bad is immediate.
A high school chemistry teacher gets diagnosed with cancer and starts cooking meth. That hook alone is outrageous. And from there, it escalates [music] quickly. Stakes go up every season.
Tension builds fast. You're hooked almost instantly. Better Call Saul?
Well, that's completely different. It's a slow burn. A struggling lawyer slowly, painfully becoming Saul Goodman. It takes its time. Sometimes a lot of time.
But that's the point. Breaking Bad is a roller coaster. Better Call Saul is a slow descent. Which is better? For pure storytelling momentum, Breaking Bad takes it. Round two, characters. Let's talk transformations. Walter White becomes Heisenberg. Iconic. But Jimmy McGill becoming Saul Goodman? That might be the most detailed [music] character study in modern television history.
Jimmy isn't just changing. He's slipping. Gradually, tragically, inevitably. And then, there's Kim Wexler, one of the best written characters across both shows. Breaking Bad also has incredible characters.
Jesse, Gus, Mike. [music] But Better Call Saul deepens them, gives them more space, more layers. This one's close, but for character work, Better Call Saul wins. Round three, performances. Bryan Cranston as Walter White is legendary.
Four Emmy wins for this role, that tells you everything. [music] He goes from mild-mannered teacher to terrifying kingpin and you believe every [music] second. But Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill, this is quieter, more subtle, more controlled. He's carrying a six-season transformation almost entirely through nuance. And then you've got Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler finally winning an Emmy for the final season.
Breaking Bad has bigger moments. Better Call Saul has more consistent performances.
>> [music] >> And over a longer stretch, Better Call Saul edges [music] this, but it was close. Round four, editing.
Both shows are written by the same creative team led by Vince Gilligan. So we're talking elite versus elite.
Breaking Bad is sharper, more explosive.
It gives you moments, big unforgettable TV moments. "I am the one [clears throat] who knocks. Say my name." Better Call Saul, less interested in shock, more interested in precision.
Every detail feels earned. Every consequence matters. And crucially, fewer dips. Breaking Bad has a slight mid-series lull. Better Call Saul is remarkably consistent. So for writing quality start to finish, Better Call Saul takes this. Round five, cinematography and direction. Both shows look incredible, but Better Call Saul takes it further. More experimental framing, more visual storytelling, more patience with silence, shots that you just sit with. Breaking Bad set the standard, Better Call Saul refined it.
This is the only one that isn't close.
Better Call Saul wins. Round six, impact and iconic moments. This is where Breaking Bad hits back hard. Ozymandias is often ranked as one of the greatest TV episodes ever made. The face-off episode, the crawl space scene, Walter White as a cultural phenomenon. Breaking Bad wasn't just a hit, it was everywhere. Better Call Saul is critically adored. It holds a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but culturally, it never quite hit the same global level. So, this one, Breaking Bad wins. Round seven, consistency. Final round, Breaking Bad starts strong, ends strong, but there are small dips in pacing in the middle seasons. Better Call Saul, six seasons, no drop off. If anything, it gets better as it goes. The final season is exceptional. For consistency across the entire run, Better Call Saul wins.
>> [music] >> Final verdict. So, where does that leave us? Breaking Bad wins storytelling, impact. Better Call Saul wins characters, performances, writing, cinematography, consistency.
>> [music] >> And this is where it gets interesting, and maybe a little bit controversial, because Breaking Bad is probably the more iconic show. It's hard to find a Better Call Saul t-shirt. I found this, no problem at all. Breaking Bad is the bigger show, the one more people will instantly say is better. But, if you're judging purely on craft, on consistency, on depth, Better Call Saul might be the better show by a whisker. And I already know what's coming, because if you watched Breaking Bad first, you're probably not accepting that. So, go on.
