[00:00:48]Tension builds fast. You're hooked almost instantly. Better Call Saul?

[00:00:52]Well, that's completely different. It's a slow burn. A struggling lawyer slowly, painfully becoming Saul Goodman. It takes its time. Sometimes a lot of time.

[00:01:05]But that's the point. Breaking Bad is a roller coaster. Better Call Saul is a slow descent. Which is better? For pure storytelling momentum, Breaking Bad takes it. Round two, characters. Let's talk transformations. Walter White becomes Heisenberg. Iconic. But Jimmy McGill becoming Saul Goodman? That might be the most detailed [music] character study in modern television history.

[00:01:28]Jimmy isn't just changing. He's slipping. Gradually, tragically, inevitably. And then, there's Kim Wexler, one of the best written characters across both shows. Breaking Bad also has incredible characters.

[00:01:39]Jesse, Gus, Mike. [music] But Better Call Saul deepens them, gives them more space, more layers. This one's close, but for character work, Better Call Saul wins. Round three, performances. Bryan Cranston as Walter White is legendary.

[00:01:55]Four Emmy wins for this role, that tells you everything. [music] He goes from mild-mannered teacher to terrifying kingpin and you believe every [music] second. But Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill, this is quieter, more subtle, more controlled. He's carrying a six-season transformation almost entirely through nuance. And then you've got Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler finally winning an Emmy for the final season.

[00:02:20]Breaking Bad has bigger moments. Better Call Saul has more consistent performances.

So for writing quality start to finish, Better Call Saul takes this. Round five, cinematography and direction. Both shows look incredible, but Better Call Saul takes it further. More experimental framing, more visual storytelling, more patience with silence, shots that you just sit with. Breaking Bad set the standard, Better Call Saul refined it.

[00:03:30]Better Call Saul wins. Round six, impact and iconic moments. This is where Breaking Bad hits back hard. Ozymandias is often ranked as one of the greatest TV episodes ever made. The face-off episode, the crawl space scene, Walter White as a cultural phenomenon. Breaking Bad wasn't just a hit, it was everywhere. Better Call Saul is critically adored. It holds a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but culturally, it never quite hit the same global level. So, this one, Breaking Bad wins. Round seven, consistency. Final round, Breaking Bad starts strong, ends strong, but there are small dips in pacing in the middle seasons. Better Call Saul, six seasons, no drop off. If anything, it gets better as it goes. The final season is exceptional. For consistency across the entire run, Better Call Saul wins.

It's hard to find a Better Call Saul t-shirt. I found this, no problem at all. Breaking Bad is the bigger show, the one more people will instantly say is better. But, if you're judging purely on craft, on consistency, on depth, Better Call Saul might be the better show by a whisker. And I already know what's coming, because if you watched Breaking Bad first, you're probably not accepting that. So, go on.
