The video smartly deconstructs the "boring Corolla" myth by highlighting the high-revving 2ZZ-GE engine's sophisticated pedigree. It’s a concise tribute to an era when genuine mechanical soul was still accessible to the everyday driver.

Toyota hid a Lotus motor in a $7000 Corolla. Nobody noticedAdded:
Most people walk past this car without a second look, which is exactly the point.
The 2Z GE, a 1.8 L 4-cylinder developed jointly by Toyota and Yamaha. The same architecture that ended up in the Lotus Elise in the Exiege in cars that cost four times what this one does.
in a Corolla with five doors and change from $10,000. My name is Pat and welcome to 2PJZ. It's great to see if you're returning and a very warm welcome if you're new. I'd love to introduce to you a new series [music] called 10K Heroes where we find the best cars under 10 grand and [music] maybe at the end of it eventually buy one. Today's episode features number one on my short list, the Toyota Corolla Sport. Let's get stuck in.
I'm rating every car in this series on three important criteria. First [music] is versatility. Can this be your only car? Keep cost. Will it eat you alive?
And [music] thrill factor. Does it actually make you feel something? Three criteria, three scores. [music] Let's get into it and see if the Teo is our ultimate 10K hero. But before we get stuck in properly, there is something I need to tell you about this car. The Sportivo will score well on all three criteria, but how well depends entirely on which [music] one you're buying. The good ones don't announce themselves. The same body kit as I left the factory with stock wheel size, [music] no modifications. They look like a crawler that got slightly more serious about itself, which is basically what it is.
The boot is usable. The rear seats will fit adults. Economy is genuinely livable under 6,000 RPM, which you will observe most of the time because the city does not deserve what happens above it. From the outside, it looks like nothing, which depending on your life, could be its [music] biggest flaw or its greatest asset. Whether it's a school drop off on Monday, the commute [music] to work on Tuesday, or a mountain run on Saturday, it doesn't complain about any of these things. So, for versatility, I'm going to give the Sport a [music] 9 out of 10.
So, the gearbox is the first thing that I want you to know about before you go looking. Fifth and sixth gear feel almost identical. And I've found when I've been driving it, I don't actually ever use fifth gear. I just go straight [music] to sixth, even at 60 km/h because of how short the actual ratios are. And reverse sits so closely to first gear that a downshift from fifth could end up finding you in dangerous money shift territory instead. So just be aware it's pretty easy to do and it's important to know that that's a real risk. The weakness is the oil pump on high kmter examples that have been run hard and low on oil. So pretty much every P player example sports evo out there. You will find out. I'd recommend for anything over 150,000 km to get a compression test and an oil consumption check before you hand over the money.
The parts for this are everywhere and they're reasonably cheap because after all this is a Corolla. The things that go wrong on this are the sort of things that can go wrong on any 20-year-old performance car. But because this is the same motor that was shared with the Lotus, although it is a Toyota engine, you can creep into that Lotus tax sometimes. But if you find a good one that's been looked after, the issues really aren't all that problematic. As I mentioned earlier, this has nearly 350,000 KS on it and the engine is solid. So for keep cost, I'm going to give the to a 7 out of 10. It loses [music] a few points because a neglected 2Z Zed is a very expensive 2Z Zed and being a South Africanbuilt car, it's a little bit harder to find parts for and more expensive than the Japanese-built Corollas. So, just loses out a little bit there.
[music] Under 6,000 RPM, the Sportivo is just like any other Corolla, which isn't a criticism. It's really smooth. It drives straight, and it's the exact sort of thing that you'd want if you're driving it to work or just about your daily duties like I am now in traffic. And then, w you hit 6,200 and the intake opens up another 54%.
That's actually quite a noticeable little kick. It's not as in your face as VTEC is, but when you hit lift in this car, you absolutely feel it.
The close ratio gearbox is a genuinely good time. But there are two things I noticed when driving this car that I really need to mention because they absolutely let it down. First is the stock suspension. It under steers before it even feels like it's going to under steer. And through the corners, it does feel very boaty and lacks a lot of fuel.
And this steering position uh takes a lot of getting used to because you're in quite a low seat. Your knees are pretty close to the steering wheel. And you it's not telescopic, so you can't pull it further towards you.
That's a real pain for me and probably something that would turn me off from actually buying one of these. cuz if I was daily driving this and the steering position felt so weird, it's not really like it's one of those things you can actually ignore. So, coilovers aren't optional for this car if you want it to be as good as it can be. And another thing I noticed when driving it is unlike VTEC, which you can stay on between gears, the lift will disengage because of how the ratio in the box is in the Sports Evo. So, that does hinder the driving fun a little bit. So, for thrill factor, I'm going to give the Sports Evo a 7 out of 10. Versatility is 9 out of 10. Keep cost is a seven.
And thrill factor as well is also a seven, giving the Sport a total score of 23 out of 30.
Most cars at this price are a compromise in every direction. This one is a compromise in almost no direction. The only thing it asks is that you find a good one and that you take it past 6,200 at least once a week so it remembers what it is. The Corolla Sports Evo is two completely different cars depending on what you're doing. Below 6200 RPM, it's just a Corolla. Above 6200, [music] it is a completely different animal altogether.
This is a car with a secret. And that secret will cost you 7 grand.
So, that's episode one of 10K Heroes.
I'd love to know what you think about the Keller Sport. if you think this should be the car that I buy. But wait until we get into some other episodes where we're going to be featuring a whole another bunch of cars. We got some Aussie stuff, German stuff, and more Japanese stuff lined up. I really hope you enjoyed it and you learned something. My name's Pat. This has been 2 PJZ. Make sure to hit that subscribe button and never forget to stay driven, and we'll see you in the next one.
