On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington state erupted in one of the most powerful and destructive volcanic explosions in U.S. history, when a magnitude 5.1 earthquake triggered a massive lateral blast that collapsed the north face of the mountain, sending hot gas, ash, and rock racing down the slopes at over 300 miles per hour, with an ash plume rising more than 80,000 feet into the sky, killing 57 people, destroying hundreds of homes, bridges, and forests, and lowering the summit by more than 1,300 feet, making it the most economically destructive volcanic event in American history.
