Tracking Strong to severe thunderstorms.

[00:00:35]Um we are under a severe thundstone warning for team Johnson, Iowa County, uh Cedar County.

[00:00:47]See, we do got storms to our north here.

[00:00:56]Uh, these are producing some damaging winds.

[00:06:28]All right, there we go. Thought my [clears throat] mic was working, but it's not working. There we go. All right. Um, the reason for the se thunderstorm warning is due to these high winds we're seeing right here in Benton County.

[00:07:10]You see this darker blue.

[00:07:14]That's the strongest winds. That's that's why we are in a severe thunderstorm warning. This is why this was issued is due to radar [clears throat] indicating up to 70 miles per hour winds.

[00:07:31]This is moving southeast.

[00:07:37]So if you are in Moringo, Iowa City, uh Typton, Wilton, basically like areas southeast of the storm like Musketine.

[00:07:53]Even though city of Muskine is not in the sever thunderstorming, but expect these winds to move through.

[00:08:02]I do expect the storm to move through between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.

[00:10:16]This includes this would impact highway impact highway 30 now.

[00:10:58]I believe this storm is moving southeast at 50 miles per hour.

[00:11:07]So this should be should be getting bree windy right now in Cedar Rapids. Should be getting hit right now if you are in Cedar Rapids.

[00:11:35]Uh, let's see. The wind should be about North Liberty here. I was saying about less than five minutes. Iowa City probably about 5 10 minutes. You should be getting the winds.

[00:14:13]So that was reported right here by New Hall is where the 70 m per hour wind was reported.

[00:15:25]As long as the storm does not lose strength, this warning could be extended. So, I'm going to keep an eye on the radars here and make sure nothing.

[00:23:31]I can if you want I can pull up all the data how many time your location has been impacted with several thunderstorms tornadoes in your area. You really want a tornado in your area you want damage that's the stupidest thing to even wish for.

[00:52:09]So, expect some gusty winds with that one. I do see the gusty winds just like between Washington and Colona.

[00:52:38]Like I said, I don't know why that's threat throne is still on there.

[00:52:55]is let's see draw here a second um pause this you see um like right here is Um this is a pocket. You see the stronger outbound indicating sharp wind guidance right here. So there's some strong winds between Wilman and Westchester or south of Colona.

[00:53:46]So southwest of Colona into Washington County, there is a pocket of stronger outbound. Uh this indicates a sharp wind guidance. I do not see an obvious tight gate to gate rotation co in this um radar scan here that will immediately suggest any tornado but there is no rotation anything with this. Instead, the uh low city pattern is more consistent with the strong outflow wind spreading toward from the storm. I'm not seeing.

[00:54:24]Again, it's the primary hazard, but this storm is um not really going to call it straight line winds, but there will be some strong gusty winds with this Why is that still there?

[00:55:07]I don't know why this severe thunderstorm is still here. The wind the wind threat has already passed through.

[00:56:16]I don't know why it's still thunderstorm warning needs to go away.

One of the first things I look for is whether is a tight red green couplet which could indicate strong lowle rotation which I don't see that here but since we are in the conditions for possible isolated tornadoes I'm keep an eye on this just because that first supports chance for tornado that Nashi form one was one was confirmed from this storm which was west of us over by I'd say south west of um water uh Cedar Falls.

[01:02:42]So what what I'm looking here is this storm appears to have developed which is called a rear inflow surge.

[01:02:52]This is where the stronger wind loss are seeding to the surface and what happens is that spreads outward. That's a common process in Boeing segments which we are currently seeing with this storm.

[01:03:07]Show you what I'm talking about when I say Boeing segment.

[01:03:13]Let's go back here.

[01:03:20]So when I mean bow segment, I'm talking about this right here.

[01:03:24]Usually when stuff like this happens, it can produce some strong winds. This is why we had that outflow which is a shelf cloud.

[01:03:37]So again this is a pro common process in bone segments and well actually also cause severe squall line which is not really a severe squall line.

[01:03:55]But the main concern with this uh signature would be um strong winds.

[01:04:01]Let's say 60 70 miles per hour especially right right around Washington.

[01:04:12]So this could be you can get falling branches. Large range isolated power outages are possible with this wind damage occurring ahead of the heaviest rain which we're currently seeing with this right now especially right right in here.

[01:04:38]And there's some let's say there might be a little bit here in Musketine County.

[01:04:47]Probably some strong winds in that one, but not as intense down here in Washington County.

[01:05:00]But there is strong evidence of strong winds.

[01:05:04]Wind is in a dominant hazard.

[01:05:08]We do have heavy rain. There's frequent lightning also occurring with this storm.

[01:05:49]Uh, now now they finally issues severe thunderstorm warning for Washington County in Kilakut County. Washington, Kilica County, you are now under a severe thunderstorm warning, which is the one I just mentioned about the strong winds.

[01:06:15]Again, this is a good example why severe thunderstorms don't always need tornado to be dangerous.

[01:06:21]Broad swath of 60 60 70 plus miles per hour. Straight line winds can produce damage comparable to a weak tornado over a bunch of like a over a large much much over a much larger area.

[01:06:48]Let's go back to Yeah, Washington.

[01:07:03]That's Westchester, Kyota.

[01:07:09]You should be getting a strong winds as we speak.

[01:08:26]As I was showing for a while now, this is where the strongest winds are, especially right in here.

[01:09:13]Sir Dunston warning for Mustin County is no longer.

[01:09:30]Might have to keep an eye on this one here. This might be actually has some rotation with it.

[01:09:58]I'm showing here this is this is interesting because it shows a localized feature embedded within the broader brighter windfield.

[01:10:12]Here's what I'm seeing is nearly the entire uh radar here showing a strong outbound Vel city which you see in red indicating power for winds moving away from the radar just northwest of Sigy.

[01:10:30]Um this is a small pocket of inbound see what you can see the green closer here embedded with the larger outflow.

[01:10:47]Um, this creates a localized area of stronger windshare. This is where the inbound and outflow winds meet.

[01:10:54]But does this indicate a tornado? Not necessarily.

[01:11:01]But it it is a tight it's very tight compact red and green comlet which is a strong velocities.

[01:11:09]It's immediately adjustment to each other which can often present from scan to scan which it does show some rotation which I am seeing a little bit.

[01:11:37]Let's see.

[01:11:44]I definitely keep watching this area.

[01:11:58]Let's see. We got It's not I don't see much going on with this right now.

[01:12:48]I am going to keep an eye on this just because it could become tornado warn but something to keep an eye on.

[01:13:05]It looks like the severe thunderstorm warning should be extended into um Henry County and Jefferson counties.

[01:14:10]So was updated which part of it probably has been cancelled which kill Washington County is still under it which I want I would expect this to be I expect this to be like extended out. Well, I can't draw crap right now.

[01:15:33]You're probably wonder you're probably wondering what I am looking at looking for. But you see there is pretty tight right there which is overall.

[01:15:47]Well, it could be daming straight line winds also.

[01:15:50]Um, could be area of rotation as well.

[01:16:14]Basically, this is this is called a what we usually call it a classic signature of a strong wear inflow surge or a bowling line capable of widespread damaging winds.

[01:16:33]This is definitely look like shear.

[01:16:52]So this so this type of radar I'm showing here will show you the winds and of course rotation.

[01:17:03]I can it can also show you ongoing tornadoes.

[01:17:08]This radar signature definitely needs monitor because the light embedded circulations can intensify in just just in a few minutes.

[01:17:20]But based solely on this skin, I would still still want to keep an eye on this because this is a damaging wind producing uh QLCS with them. This is basically like embedded with a visel vortex rather than a confirm like tornado any rotation.

[01:17:50]But there is the radar scan does show something definitely keep an eye on there.

[01:18:35]Um I mean, I know a lot of you probably wonder, you probably have no idea what you're looking at, but I'm watching these radars for any rotations and for strong winds, but I hear what I'm seeing.

[01:19:13]Um is a this indicates a broad area of strong winds which is moving away from the radar.

[01:19:24]Um, this consistent with a severe thunderstorm of course, but there currently not a severe thunderstorm warning warning for Must County, but some there is some strong winds right Oh, good.

[01:20:16]It should be some there's some strong winds right now right in here.

[01:20:28]Let's move this over here so you can see better.

[01:20:35]So in this white line I just drew inside this white line is there is some strong winds. So like musketine um probably Fland. They're probably all seeing some gusty winds right now.
