Scientists discovered that viral DNA fragments can persist in human cells for years without causing symptoms, and genetic factors in the Major Histocompatibility Complex control how much viral DNA remains in the body; these viral loads can predict disease risk years before symptoms appear, such as high EBV viral load increasing Hodgkin's lymphoma risk, while other viruses like HHV-7 peak in youth and decline with age.

Scientists found viral DNA quietly hiding inside millions of peopleAdded:
Do you know your body can carry viruses [music] for years and you may never feel a thing? Even right now, fragments of viral DNA may be moving quietly inside your [music] cells. Not enough to make you sick, but enough to show some viruses may never fully leave. And here's where it gets [music] fascinating. In a study of more than 917,000 people, [music] scientists measured what they call viral load and found 82 regions in the human genome, many inside [music] the major histocompatibility complex, that help control how much viral DNA remains [music] in the body.
In other words, your genes may help decide whether these viruses stay suppressed or linger in the background.
But these patterns don't stay fixed.
They shift with life and environment.
[music] Epstein-Barr virus becomes more common with age and even changes with the seasons, rising [music] in winter, falling in summer. Other viruses like HHV-7 do almost the opposite, [music] peaking in youth before declining later in life. And here's where this turns serious because viral levels may [music] predict disease long before symptoms appear. Researchers found high EBV [music] viral load can raise the risk of Hodgkin's lymphoma later in life. But for multiple sclerosis, [music] the danger wasn't the amount of virus, it was how aggressively the immune system reacted. And these viruses [music] are incredibly common. Anelloviruses exist in up to 90% of people, [music] usually harmless. But sex, age, and even smoking can shift what stays hidden inside you.
Many viruses may never truly leave. They go quiet and your genes and habits may help [music] decide whether they remain whispers or slowly tilt the odds toward disease years before anything feels wrong.
