Scientists found viral DNA quietly hiding inside millions of people

In a study of more than 917,000 people, [music] scientists measured what they call viral load and found 82 regions in the human genome, many inside [music] the major histocompatibility complex, that help control how much viral DNA remains [music] in the body.

Other viruses like HHV-7 do almost the opposite, [music] peaking in youth before declining later in life. And here's where this turns serious because viral levels may [music] predict disease long before symptoms appear. Researchers found high EBV [music] viral load can raise the risk of Hodgkin's lymphoma later in life. But for multiple sclerosis, [music] the danger wasn't the amount of virus, it was how aggressively the immune system reacted. And these viruses [music] are incredibly common. Anelloviruses exist in up to 90% of people, [music] usually harmless. But sex, age, and even smoking can shift what stays hidden inside you.
