Cops Catch Bank Scammer by Using a Box of Potatoes (Bodycam)Added:
On a Friday morning, an elderly woman received a call from someone claiming to be a TD Bank fraud prevention representative. The caller told her that someone was attempting to withdraw $32,000 from her bank account and that in order to catch the suspect, she needed to withdraw $5,000 in cash. With the money withdrawn, the bank would use marked bills to catch the person who accessed her account. Due to this being an inside job, the victim did what the scammers instructed her to do, and then the scammer sent an Uber driver to pick up the money, which the victim had put inside a box. The victim fell for this scam twice and lost $5,000 each time.
Then the scammers called her a third time and told her she needed to withdraw $20,000.
Initially, the victim put in a withdrawal request with her bank, but then she finally came to her senses and called police. That's when police set up a sting operation. This brings us to the body cam footage.
>> I got the thing through Uber and it said package. So I accepted it >> and then 3581.
>> What?
>> It would have been this number here. And then this is his the actual >> like their number. This is through Uber.
>> So um I got the thing. It said accept. I accepted it and then it said I was picking up in Holly Forest. So I'm like, "Okay, well that's a retirement center thing like like a retirement community.
My grandma lived in there like can't be nothing bad." So, I picked that up. Um, and it was from this elderly lady and I kind of thought like at first I thought it was weird because it was just she was just standing there and I didn't see the box. And um she was like I said, "Well, ma'am, I said I'm not signed up for like Uber like like you know where I give people rides." And she's like, "I'm not getting a ride. It's a package." I was like, "Okay, well that makes sense cuz it said package." I said, "I just seen you standing there so it just threw me off. I've never This is all new to me.
And um she says, "Okay." Well, she hands it to me and she had them him or who whoever on the phone. And then I confirmed the confirmed pickup and it went it came up to that address that I just shown you in Dando 12.
>> It said that it was Dand. So I was like, "Well, ma'am," I was like, "Come back."
I was like, "I can't take this package because I can't go to Dand. I've got trouble with my axles. Like, I'm not going to make it to Dand. And she said, well, she had them on the phone and said, well, let me uh, you know, let me, he said he'll call me. So, then that's when he called me from the Uber number and said that I could change the location and we could pick up closer to you. I said, "Okay, that works." And then he gave me this location. And I said, "Well, I'm going to do it up front where there's cameras, so you know, it's safer for everybody."
>> Show the address like you did before.
>> The like the the land address.
>> So, come over here.
>> Okay. Just so you're aware what's going on. I'm Detective Bernol. I work for police department. Okay. Um right now, this is a felony investigation. Okay. So, you went over there, you picked up the package.
>> Yes. It was from an old lady on it was 357. Um I took like that Disneyland road or Disney road or whatever and then it was like >> All right. So once the package >> who contacts you?
>> He did because I told the lady cuz it came up that Dand address and I told that lady she needed to come back and pick it up, you know, take the package back because I can't go to Dand cuz my car is not going to make it that far.
>> Who's that?
>> That's a spam. Okay.
>> And then um so she said, "Okay, well, I'll have him call you cuz he said he could change the location." So that's when he had called me through that Uber number.
>> Which is the Uber number?
>> Okay, hold on.
>> Trying to pull up my insurance paper so he could see my my insurance is good.
Like I'm not like I'm not suspended.
>> What was I'm so sorry. What am I looking for right now?
>> The number that called you.
>> Okay. I'm So this is I've never been involved in anything like this before.
>> That's okay.
>> Okay. So now this threw me off cuz that one Okay. So this is the the one it calls like through Uber. Like if you do something through Uber, say somebody orders from the store cuz that's normally what happens.
>> Mhm.
>> And you know, say they don't have anything, you can call them, but it goes through like the Uber thing.
>> Okay. So it's a phone for Uber to communicate between two.
>> Yeah. It's like a number through >> So then what's the second number then?
second number is um he he called me through that the first time and then when I was talking to him he said um do you have your um like another number that I can just text you from when I get to the new location >> and where did they give you this address? How did you get over here?
>> He gave me that. He told me to meet him here. He said, "Well, let me try to change it through the app." He goes, "Well, it won't let me change it through the app, but it's giving me a location of the Motel 6 on International." I honestly I used to work here for three years and I stayed here like five years ago. So I knew where this place was and I was like, "Okay, well I'm going to do it up front where all the cameras are because this is like I said, this is I don't normally Yeah, this isn't I normally pick up from a a store to a store, you know, like and then when it came through as a package, I thought it was weird, but I do packages like from Home Depot and stuff like that. So >> I don't I don't know. I I guess it it kind of did set up a red flag. That's why I um screenshotted the address it was going to in Dland. So, I was going to send it to my husband just cuz I thought that was really odd.
>> But >> on the app itself for Uber, >> I think I still have it pulled up cuz I was trying to right here. It's still trying to give me the directions to Oh, I think it timed out.
>> I probably won't even get paid for this.
It's okay.
>> That's the least of your concern right now. Obviously, >> yeah, >> there's a lot more going on. Okay.
>> Oh, no.
>> So, let me ask you this. At any point, did you know what was in the package?
>> I had absolutely no idea.
>> Okay. Have you ever met that lady before?
>> I've never met you spoken to that lady before.
>> Never before.
>> Do you know this person?
>> No.
>> Have you ever spoken to him before?
>> No. Honest to God, I promise you, I do not know any of these people. I'm just an Uber driver and I only picked it up because I worked at Pet Paradise for seven years. I got fired. My husband works in town. So, I'm like, let me do something so I'm not just sitting around and I I go between Uber and Door Dash.
Well, Door Dash has >> been doing this >> for a little bit now.
>> I got fired um July like the end end of July, like August 1st. I got fired and I started it like 2 weeks after that.
>> Okay.
>> So, I've been doing it since like say the second or third week of August.
>> Okay.
>> This is the first thing I've ever had like this ever.
>> Well, hopefully it's the last.
>> I'm never doing Uber. I'm I'm never I'm not doing this ever. I'm done. I'm so scared.
>> Like something really >> What's your name?
>> Amber.
>> Okay. I'm going to go talk to this guy.
See what his deal is. Okay.
>> Okay.
>> I will let you know. Oh, you were not free to leave until I or somebody else tells you.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> I do have to get my husband at 12.
That's an hour hour from now.
>> You should be fine. Okay. Just sit tight. We'll sort this out. Okay.
>> Has anybody read them yet?
>> I read them.
>> You did?
>> I did.
>> Okay. All right. So, I'm Detective Bernol. I work for Hill Police Department. This gentleman has informed you of your rights. Are you willing to speak to me? Yes, sir.
>> Okay. So, let's start from the very beginning.
What happened?
>> Basically, I'm walking from my parents house over to the racetrack to get something to drink real quick. Next thing you know, they're flagging me down. I say, "Yo, what's up? Yo, you trying to make some money?" Sure. I haven't made no money a little bit. It's been minutes.
>> Who's flagging you down?
>> It was the people inside the vehicle. I wasn't really looking at them that well.
>> Okay. What kind of car?
>> Uh, it was like I said, the black Hyundai. It might have been a black um Mercedes-Benz.
>> Okay. So, a black Hyundai or a black Mercedes? Okay. How many people in the car?
>> Uh, just him. Just him.
>> Just a male. Yeah.
>> White, black, Hispanic. What do they look like? Black.
>> Black.
>> Like, like I said, mid maybe 25, 30 years old.
>> So, 20 to 30s.
>> What kind of hair?
>> Uh, he had a hood on.
>> Hood on. What color was the hood?
>> All black. Like, yeah. He was wearing black pants, uh, black hoodie, I think.
Black shoes.
>> So, all black clothing.
>> Yep.
>> How did you see his shoes? Were you outside the car or inside the car? I was inside the car and I was sitting on the he was in the driver's seat and I was sitting on the behind the passenger seat. When I looked over, I saw him wearing shoes.
>> Okay. So, he flagged you down. Okay.
He's driving.
>> Mhm.
>> Where were you exactly?
>> I was still walking past the truck. When he flagged me down, I said, >> "Okay." So, then you get into the car, you get into the back passenger seat, >> and then we drive up over there for a little bit. Say he said, "Hey, let me just use your phone real quick." And then he was calling ranch. I was wondering what's going on, but I'm just minding my own businesses. I'm just trying to make money and be done with this.
>> Okay.
>> And then from there, like I said, from there, we waited an hour, waited for the lady to call us and and then we went from there and then he drove me over to the south side of the McDonald's and dropped me off and then I walked over here.
>> Okay. What did he tell you that you were doing?
>> I was just picking up a package. That's literally it. I don't know. Nothing more, nothing less. You pick this up.
I'll give you a few hundred. I'm like, "All right, bet."
>> I couldn't hear you.
>> I said, "If you pick up this package, I'll give you a few hundred." I said, "All right, bet." And that's when I meant to come do this. I didn't know what was going on. I thought, "Oh, they just need me to grab something." And I walked right back. I didn't know none of this.
>> Okay. So, you have no idea what's in the box.
>> No, I don't.
>> Have you ever met this individual before?
>> No.
>> Okay.
>> Like I said, I just got out of Georgia.
Like, I was up there visiting some family. I got caught up with some stupid [ __ ] and I'm just trying to stay clean.
That's what they told me. I need to stay 300 and some odd days to be clean so I don't get caught back to jail. So I'm limited to >> Okay. And you were the only person other than the driver in that car. Is there anything inside the car that you specifically remember?
>> No, it was just empty and it might have been a foreign or something cuz like you know how like some cars have have the lights inside of them and that that was it really.
>> Okay. What color was the light then?
>> Uh purple. Sometimes it would go to blue, sometimes it would go to red.
>> So, it was a rotating light that would change colors on the inside of the car.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Is there anything else that you remember from the inside of the car?
>> No.
>> Is there anything that he said specifically that you remember? He said, "Hey, >> I remember when he was on opponent, he was saying AAP this, this, and this."
But I didn't hear >> Say what?
>> AP. I think it was a nickname or something.
>> AP?
How? Like, why would you suspect that's a nickname? And why does that stick out?
>> I don't know. No, just he was saying it a lot.
>> So he was saying that a lot. How long were you in the car with them over there?
>> Like I said, for about an hour.
>> You were waiting over there for about an hour.
>> Okay. Um >> I'm just hoping I don't go to jail.
That's it. Like I said, I don't I have no idea what the >> What's that?
>> What?
>> We They gave me that. It should be left.
I think it's or >> they gave it to you?
>> Was that part of your payment?
>> No, they just asked me if I wanted to smoke and I said, "Yeah, sure."
>> Okay.
>> What's your history like?
>> Uh, clean other than, like I said, going to Georgia and getting caught up with stupid. I've been clean my whole life, sir. I've had jobs. I've gone to college. I want I plan on going back to college very soon for accounting. I'm I'm straight. I have a clean record and like I said, other than me going to Georgia and getting scooped the [ __ ] over by someone, but yeah. No, other than that, I have a clean record.
>> And you've never met this person? You have no idea who he is? Did he provide you a phone number?
>> No, he didn't.
>> Did he provide you a name?
>> Key.
>> Key.
>> K E, I think, or K E Y.
>> Any tattoos? Any logos on the clothing?
>> No, I didn't see it.
>> Any weapons?
>> I know.
>> Okay. So, he just played it cool. Hey, I need you to help me out with something.
You sat over there for a while.
>> Hey, go over here, pick this up. Didn't tell you what it was.
>> He just said it was a package. He didn't say what was inside of it.
So, you pick up the package and come bring it back up in the vehicle. I'll just >> Okay. The reason why I'm asking you these questions and the reason why you're detained, okay, and why he read you your rights. All right. This is an active felony investigation. Okay.
>> Oh, it didn't.
>> Yeah. We're talking multiple felonies, considerable amount of prison time for what is going on.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. Money laundering, grand theft, scheme to defraud. All right. Illegal use of two-way communication device. All right.
>> So, multiple multiple felony charges.
So, I want you to be 100% honest with me. Is there anything else that is going on to where now I need to do something?
>> I don't know.
>> Or is everything you told me 100% true?
>> Everything I told you is 100% true.
>> So, you have no idea who this individual is?
>> No, I don't. I got told >> you don't know where they went and took off to?
>> No, I don't. I really don't. Like, it might There might be something on the phone, but at the same time, like I said, I don't know, but he just gave me his phone and said, "Oh, like stay on the phone so I know how everything goes." Okay. ship and I was talking.
>> So, this is his phone that he gave you and told you, "Hey, just >> keep it on, keep it running."
>> So, that way I could keep track of you.
>> Yes.
>> Okay.
Obviously, if you could raise your right hand and swear and attest to what's going on, you would.
>> Yes.
>> Okay.
>> Mercedes pulls up like right where that truck is pretty much. Pulls up there.
newer model Mercedes, silver trim, pulls up, he gets out of the passenger side, walks over, they do the take down.
There's also a matte black Mercedes that was kind of at the same time. We got the tags for both of them. The newer model Mercedes always comes back to a rental.
Um, they meet up when we do the takeown skirt. They're they're tag readers for the silver Mercedes is coming out of Delton or Dand. I don't know somewhere.
>> Okay. But you got the info. We could follow up on that.
>> Yeah. So, and you got his phone, so you might as well just hold it down and do a search warrant. I'd probably have popped on airplane mode.
>> I got that in my pocket.
>> So, >> um I cut her loose. Do you have any questions? Any concerns?
>> I'm My only concern was after a little bit, I started thinking, okay, so if that's drugs, then what if it was fentanyl? And I asked that one guy. I was like, it's potatoes.
>> It's what?
>> It's potatoes.
It's a dummy box. It's filled with potatoes.
>> See, people are strange. I'll say like when I first >> So, when it was supposed to be, it was supposed to be $20,000.
>> Oh my god.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> But it's not 20,000.
>> I'm just glad it wasn't >> where I touched it. And >> you have nothing to worry about that box at all. It's a clean box. It is a completely a dummy. There is nothing in there other than potatoes and plastic.
>> Okay. After allowing the Uber driver to leave, officers interviewed the suspect again at police headquarters. And that's when his story started to change.
>> I know you're probably recording all this. I should have been honest. Uh we weren't I look I was scared and protecting him. I know my life if basically the person told me that if I don't do this, he's going to be my And when we got over here, yes, at the time I didn't know what was going on. It made me curious of why he said, "Oh, if anything happens, this is what you say."
And I'm like, "Okay, that's you're talking really fast. Slow down. Take a breath."
>> Okay. So, basically, I'll start from the very beginning like, "Yeah, he did drop me off over at the big bombs." But he told me when to do that, and if anything happens, say this, this, and this. I'm like, "What? Nothing." Should I just come picking up a package? Like, I'm not thinking about it until like that wasn't me realizing, oh, I didn't know what the was for. But basically, I'm on breakfast at my friend's house and he's trying to help me get a job. I'm walking over to the gas station. He flags me down like I said. And then from there, he like I he asked me if I want to make money. I say, "Sure, bet. You just got to pick up a package. Let me use your phone for this, this, and this." Like the Uber. Um, we went to Dand. And then from Dand, we came over here. And then he was on the phone. I wasn't really paying attention.
He wasn't really saying much. He just said something about the package AP and a bunch of other I was on the phone just scrolling through that not trying to pay attention to that.
>> Okay.
>> And he basically said, "Oh, if you're not able to get the package and screws the over this as soon as I'm going to hurt you and shit."
>> They're going to do what? What did he say?
>> He just said they were going to beat me up and I didn't know what exactly what they meant by that, but it had me scared. So, I said, "All right, just let me do this shit." And then he brought me back over and kissing me.
>> I didn't feel the need to threaten physical harm to you. I don't know. I guess other people I was scared. I I was trying to back out a bit once he told me everything that was going on. I'm like, I don't I don't want some, [ __ ] You're going to do this and I'm going leave you.
>> So, he like told you what was what the plan was. Like, >> he didn't really tell me. He just told me go grab this package and you're done.
>> What sketched you out where you were like [ __ ] this?
>> I was saying this when he wanted to travel with the deal cuz I thought we were just going to be in the area doing it. I didn't realize the area >> a area like the CMI area. I didn't know how far we were going out until he said I'm like what the no I don't want to do.
>> So he approached you in Cass.
>> Where exactly in Cassi?
>> Oh when I was exiting out the neighborhood all the way down at the end and then the right and then walking past the first apartment complex. He waved me down and said, "Yo, you want to get money?"
>> I thought you met him at the gas station.
>> No, I said it in here. I was walking down to the gas station. I I only said that earlier. I met him at the racetrack because I I was scared. I know. I realized I shouldn't have done it.
That's why I was put the whole thing down. I told even for the officer there.
>> Okay.
>> I'm just >> So actual fact, you were at your friend's house. You're leaving the neighborhood.
What way did you take?
>> I took, if I remember correctly, the gas station is taking a right. I took a right walking down the main road.
>> I don't know anything about CM. You're going to have to help me. um where the gas station it's a 7-Eleven across from it is it's on trying to remember cuz his house is 5141 road um trying to think if I call another neighbor take the right take the left and take the right keep on walking down there's a red line on the corner across the street Perkins and >> so at what point does he meet you does he meet you at the guy say he meets you on the road >> he meets me on the road while I'm walking down towards the first neighborhood >> rolls pulls his window down. It's a random stranger in a a dark car.
>> Yeah. No, I I I don't know. I've I've gotten myself into before. Like for a moment I not this exact thing happened to me, but walking like, "Hey, you want to make some money? I just need to use your card over the at the gas station. I use my receipt and shit." I said, "All right, and like I said, I haven't been working. Oh, I should have done better with it."
>> Come on, man. A random person in a dark car with dark tinted windows.
>> I mean, I've done No, I'm saying I've done that kind of before. How do you know?
>> Okay, then basically this mess. My life is expecting that. But it's okay. At the moment, I I won't I'm scared. Okay. I am I mean I'm I've known him for a little bit, but this is the first time he ever did hit me up this like Yeah, he he did pick me up. He did flag me down. He did ask me if I wanted to make money. And well, no, he did ask me if I wanted to make money.
I didn't know what it was specifically.
I usually just smoke with him. That's really it. and he asked me, "Hey, you want to do this, this, and this?" And I don't know why. I could still feel afraid because I didn't know him well and [ __ ] >> Okay. So, who is it?
>> Um, I met him through one of my other friends basically when I was staying over when I was still at my own apartment. This was like a few years back and I hit him up a few times off of him and like >> So, he gives you a little weed every now and then.
>> You hit him up.
>> And like I said, this was the first time he ever asked me if I wanted to do something like this. That's why I was trying to back the out of being sketchy by the way. It was like threatening.
>> Okay. What's his name?
>> Keith. I don't know. He never really told me full name. I think it's like Keon. I don't know the last name. Keon.
>> Where is he from?
>> I think Sanford area. It's not Sanford Lake Mary. He's He's actually really careful with this. He will how do I say he'll drive, but he won't ever like show anyone his address. I think just his family members, his baby m. I don't know.
>> Okay. Is that car his or somebody else's?
>> I think it's his. It might be someone else's. I know he has his main car is um I think he got it switched out or some [ __ ] Uh it was I think he had an audio point. Something happened to it. So he was borrowing someone's rental and it might have been that AP person's rental.
>> So what was the context of him meeting up with you today?
>> No, what did that start? I think he was talking that he he was kind of like coming to >> You said he picked you up.
>> Yes.
>> Did he pick you up at the friend's house or did he pick you up?
>> Example, he picked me up while I was talking. That part's true.
>> That part's true. Okay. When you get in the car with him, what did he ask you to do?
>> He asked me, "Hey, you want to pick up this package and do you mind if I use your phone real quick for Uber?" I said, "Yeah, sure." And he said, like I said, he offered to pay me.
>> How much were you going to get for just as simple?
>> $300.
>> It was cheap money. I wasn't working on this. I was probably going to go get a vape or something and get food. I haven't eaten all day either.
>> Okay. So, that part's 100% true. There's no deviation in that. You know the guy.
You met him a few times. You got a little weed off the guy. Again, it's not the end of the world. All right. He's like, "Hey, homie. Let me borrow your phone.
Need to use it for an Uber. You want to make a few bucks." Is there anything more to that?
>> No.
>> Did he ask you to do anything else?
>> No, that was it.
>> Okay. Did he tell you where the pickup was?
>> He said it was Dand first, but then told me that I just changed over to Miami and I didn't know where in Dland. I think it was a Burger King.
>> Did he say what was in the package?
>> No, he didn't. He just told me it was a package. I have no idea what the inside of it. I don't I usually don't ask those kinds of questions. Ask him this kind of questions to get me like some That's why he's always told me like don't ask questions. just do if I ever needed you for anything. Just don't ask questions and do [ __ ] >> Okay.
>> And this is the first time.
>> So when you're talking with him, is there anybody else in the car?
>> No, it was just me and him. I mean, like I said, he was on the phone with this AP person. That was it.
>> Okay. Could you see the phone number?
>> No.
>> Is there a picture or anything that pops up on the phone or?
>> Um, dude was big. He had like big dreads.
It was rounder. I think he was the same age, like 25, 30. He looked older. I don't know if he believed or not, but he had a bunch of tattoos. He was a short The picture was like a short brown guy, big like grills on his teeth, tattoos, watches, and so >> has he ever asked you to pick up anything before?
>> No, he has no.
>> So, he's never asked you to pick up or do a job like this before?
>> No, it's just the first time. And I tell him even if he was to ask me for those kind of things was I think in the past he's tried to ask me once. I'm like but I don't know what the you got going on but I'm not trying to involve myself.
>> But this was the main time that I wasn't working. I said [ __ ] it. Sure. Make some money. That was it.
>> So he's propositioned it before. This is just the first time that you took it up.
>> Yes.
>> And the reason being is because you don't have any money.
>> I I didn't have a job. I I can become really lazy at times. I'm usually on my medications. I'm not even on them right now. Sure.
So >> other than weed, do you use anything else?
>> No, I don't.
>> Does he ever?
>> In the past, I used Molly. I'm not doing it no more. I I don't It's just I have >> Did he give you the weed before he went and picked up?
>> Before.
>> Okay. So, he picks you up. You start driving towards the land. How does What road does he take? How does he get there?
>> He uses the Google. No, not Google. I mean Google maps or I think or since he has the iPhone the um what's the Google Apple Maps on his phone he's been usually uses that to get around I mean if I remember correctly we from there and then he jumped on the highway and then we got off >> what highway?
>> I4 I don't even have a license. This is my I don't I don't So, >> but everything you're telling me on the way that he got there is the truth cuz we're going to be able to backtrack this with phone records and GPS's. If you saw him again, you would know him. You would recognize him.
Okay.
So, is he a 20 to 30 year old black male?
>> Yes.
>> Does he have any tattoos?
>> Not that I know of. Like, I mean, he might have an arm tattoo or some [ __ ] last time. Does he have social media?
>> Yeah.
>> What's his social media?
>> I don't remember that personally. I just add people.
>> Okay. So, you don't know. Is it like Facebook?
>> I mean, I know he has Snapchat, but that's it.
>> Okay.
All right.
Is there anything else that can help us find Keon?
