8 Asiatic lions die in Gujarat’s Gir; massive medical drive launchedAdded:
Tragedy has struck Gujarat's Gir Forest.
Eight Asiatic lions, including four adults and four cubs, have died over the past 10 days, triggering deep concern among wildlife officials.
Authorities suspect that the four cubs fell victim to babesiosis, a deadly parasitic infection.
Meanwhile, the deaths of the four adult lions are believed to be the result of natural causes and territorial conflicts.
>> Wow.
>> According to forest department officials, babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by a protozoan parasite.
Much like malaria, it attacks red blood cells and can be fatal if it isn't detected and treated in time.
State officials have clarified that this is not a large-scale outbreak, calling the deaths isolated incidents occurring across different parts of the forest.
Even so, they are taking no chances.
As a precautionary measure, 17 adult lions have been isolated and placed under strict medical observation.
Veterinary teams from Junagadh Veterinary College, alongside forest department personnel, are now conducting continuous monitoring and patrolling in the affected zones.
A massive health screening and anti-tick treatment drive is currently underway, targeting more than 350 lions across the Gir landscape to prevent the infection from spreading further.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has personally reviewed the situation.
He has directed officials to maintain strict surveillance and ensure immediate medical intervention for the wildlife population.
Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia and senior officials have assured that the situation is fully under control, with all efforts now laser-focused on protecting the remaining historic Asiatic lion population.
