In John Carpenter's 1984 film Starman, an alien entity from a highly advanced civilization (with technology 100,000 years ahead of humans) arrives on Earth and assumes the identity of a deceased man. The alien civilization is described as unified with one language, one law, and no war or hunger, but the alien feels they have 'lost something' because they lack the diversity and individual differences that humans possess. This theme of human diversity being a valuable trait, even in a 'primitive' species, is explored through the alien's observations of human behavior, including their tendency to kill deer for fun and their complex social dynamics. The film's romantic subplot between the alien and a human woman further explores themes of connection and belonging across species.

⭐STARMAN surprised me!⭐First Time Watching MOVIE REACTIONAdded:
All right, we're checking out Starman from 1984.
I'm excited. I think it's going to be cool. Sci-fi romance, I've been told.
>> And so, Voyager 2 is now a part of history.
>> Voyager 2. So cool. Jeff Bridges probe or photographic images.
>> John Carpenter Starman. John Carpenter 2. You know, I love his movies.
>> Voyager 2 is our invitation to other intelligent species in the universe.
Please come and visit our planet Earth.
>> Music composed by Jack Nichi. I like this opening. It's kind of giving me chills.
I like this sound. I would like to imagine that space sounds like this.
Although I think it's just probably silent, but well, except for the sounds of Voyager, too.
>> Hello from the children of planet Earth.
>> So cool. Imagine you were the boy who was on that recording. That's crazy.
All I have to do is >> Oh, is that the girl from Indiana Jones?
Yes. And other things.
>> Oh, well, this is adorable. Are they divorced?
>> She looks super sad. I hope he's not dead.
>> Don't do this to yourself, Jenny. Go to sleep.
>> Woo! That's sound. Okay.
Incoming.
>> Mr. director. Yes. Would you excuse me, please?
>> I wonder if anyone in this movie will say by God.
>> Scramble the jets.
>> Sounds like Soviet space garbage.
>> The molding people say no.
>> If you don't know what it is, just fire a torpedo at it.
>> Permission to launch. Permission granted.
>> BABE, DON'T YOU THINK YOU should wait?
>> Interceptor Delta anchor reports a hit, sir. No change in speed, but we've got another alteration of course.
>> But they don't know what it is.
>> No, man. Point of impact northern Wisconsin, some place up by Shimagwin Bay.
>> Got Mark Sherman.
>> I like this. It's very sciency.
>> Call me back in 20 minutes, will you?
I'm >> right in the middle of that game.
>> Yes, sir. Sorry about that.
>> I just boss.
>> What?
>> Bye. Go.
>> Shogun Bay. Yes, sir. No, no, no, no problem.
>> He's got food all over him.
Well, that came in hot. Subscribe.
Oh my god. A nefarious ball of light from space. Oh no. Well, we don't know if it's nefarious, but oftent times they are.
Are we the ball of light?
I like the sound of this movie so far.
Girl, get wake up. Put pants on.
Certainly seems a little bit nefarious.
Just hungry. Maybe looking for something. The lady. Oh, this is freaky.
Imagine you woke up and saw that pantsless.
Just leaping through the photo album.
Wa! I got a chill. That was kind of freaky.
Oh, this is cool. Wow.
This is wild.
That cut. This sound is getting me.
Does he have a weapon? Damn. Look at that. What are these sounds? Is it a baby? Is that a baby? I hear a baby.
Oh. Oh. Oh.
Oh my.
Oh. What?
Oh my god. The sounds of like bones.
And also like goo. There's sounds of goo. John Carpenter is freaking body horror.
She must be like, "Am I insane or dreaming or there's a gun?" Don't shoot him. Don't shoot him. We're not the building.
It's her husband.
Did the ball like go into the hair and get the DNA and then become her husband?
>> Yeah. I I would be like and I've lost my mind.
>> You're nuts.
>> God, can you talk?
>> God, >> he's figuring out how to walk. That's creepy.
>> Oh, don't shoot.
>> Huh?
>> You better be with us.
>> He's trying all the different languages.
Father, be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth. I feel like that's the right response.
>> As the secretary general of the United Nations, >> all the languages that he heard on the Voyager 2.
>> I sent greetings.
>> Yeah, Bing is the right response to that. Mhm. Oh, maybe he can learn some other English. And his voice, too.
>> Oh god, what a day, huh?
>> Yeah.
>> Yes, he's very animated. He's doing a good job of being like a creepy alien wearing the skin of a man.
See, that's that's kind of that's creepy.
That poor lady. I assume he's dead. So, yeah, she probably thinks she's lost her mind.
>> What we want to do, we want to squeeze and squeeze.
>> Now he sees. Been here 5 minutes and he already knows about guns.
>> She is out.
>> Yeah. Come here. Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid. I mean, you no harm.
>> That's a good phrase for him to know.
>> Uh-oh, here comes here comes the man.
But I mean, they're not going to know that it's him unless they have some sort of scanny device. Yes. What are these that he dropped? This is crazy.
That sound.
I think you should just hide out here for a minute.
The walking is so weird. And the turning the head. He's He's doing well in this.
Yeah. What are they like bullets?
Ooh.
Emergency transmission. Observation craft destroyed. Environment hostile. I need completed symbiotic transformation.
Third day landing area one. Wow. So it's a communication device. Oh boy. What a weird dream. Girl, you don't even know.
Get ready.
You better be careful though. What if the army sees this light? What?
Not a dream pants. He's not going to hurt her, right?
Is he like right behind her?
>> Who are you?
>> I like them.
>> When you want to hide, I think. Well, and rendevu.
>> We Oh, >> can he like do some alien magic?
>> I can't get the engine started. That would be crazy if your husband was dead and then you just saw him like that right beside you. But it's not him alien.
>> Cool. What else could he do?
>> Where? Which way? Left. Right.
>> Does he know? We'll ask the balls.
>> Oh. Whoa. We can't call them nefarious balls of light anymore. We have to just call them something else.
>> Here. You know where that place is?
>> Like southwestern US. Arizona maybe.
>> What to be driven?
>> What to be driven?
>> Arizona maybe.
>> Oh, he has spoken. I have a road trip.
>> Cool car. Yeah. Are they going to like follow a trace of him or something?
Figure out what happened.
>> Can you get police bands on that thing?
>> No problem. Why?
>> I mean, did anything weird? You know, freaky, bizarre.
>> Yeah, I suppose if they were going on a road trip, like he's obviously going to interact with some people and leave a trail of like bizarre behavior probably.
Yeah, he probably will be easy to find.
Don't interact with anyone. Look at him.
She's probably so scared.
Hoping to get pulled over.
>> I'm uh Major Bell. Hi, Mark Sherman. You attached to national security?
>> Not very. I just work for them.
Actually, I'm with STEI. Search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
>> Cool. Cool. Those guys are the coolest.
>> Oh, so they're sending you guys out of meteorites now, huh? Only when they change course. They think it's a meteorite.
>> Came down slower than suborbital speed.
So naturally, they decided to fire some missiles, >> right? Like they didn't even know what it was.
>> Hey, what the hell are they doing?
Trying to take a course in >> idiots. Uh-oh. And they just >> Jesus. You were about to say, >> Adam, folks, this is station WDLU at Madison, Wisconsin.
>> Driving all night.
>> According to the AP wire, one of the biggest meteorites to strike the planet Earth.
>> I don't think it was a meteorite.
>> That's about you, isn't it? You really are some kind of Martian or something, aren't you?
>> Mhm. What do you want here? What are you doing?
>> Yes. Yes. Let's get answers.
>> What do you want with me? Where are you taking me? Why do you look so much like Scott?
>> Good question.
>> I can't get no >> satisfaction.
It doesn't >> mean I I don't know if she's familiar with all the stuff on Voyager 2. So, this probably just seems like so weird to her.
>> Jeez.
>> Help.
>> Crazy.
>> CRAP.
>> HELP. HELP ME, PLEASE. I'M BEING KIDNAPPED. I SEND GREETINGS.
>> OH MY GOD.
>> What the hell's going on here?
>> I'm being kidnapped. He's just letting her scream.
>> Greetings.
>> Greetings.
>> You better let her go, pal. I'll give you some greetings.
>> Would you be good to shoot him?
>> Uh-oh.
Wa wa.
Yeah. Break this, man. Okay, so those balls can do anything they want.
>> How'd you do that? Those little gray dogs.
>> Oh, they got it. Doesn't look like a meteorite. That's the thing. If aliens ever came here, like I feel like we're so hostile towards them. Fire first, then seize and capture.
>> This meteor, the Shimagwin sighting appears to be hollow.
>> No, not appears to be. It is hollow. I think the balloon has just gone up. Sir, >> I've never heard that phrase before, but I think he's saying like it's not a meteorite.
Did >> she just grab to keep the thing on your lap like that?
>> Like he could probably repel bullets. We don't know.
>> Guns make me a little bit jumpy. Define fine. Little bit jumpy.
>> That's a little bit jumpy is like nervous. Afraid.
>> I understand. English language. Little bit.
>> Little bit.
>> Nothing much in there. It's just a lot of junk. That's my wallet.
Velcro.
>> That's my driver's license.
That's me. My name Jenny Hayden.
>> Jenny Hayden.
>> What's his name?
>> Why did you come here?
>> So creepy.
>> Oh my god.
>> I look like Scott.
>> Yeah, you do. Yeah, that's so hard.
>> I look like Scott, so you do not be a little bit jumpy >> to put her at ease. Yeah, easier to inter interact with someone you recognize, even if they're gone versus just a ball of light, I suppose.
>> About those police calls, you did say anything weird, right?
>> Yeah. You got something?
>> A guy named Him Mueller had a collision with an orange and black 77 Mustang.
>> Yes.
>> When this Himmeer went to help her, the kidnapper yelled greetings and melted his lug wrench.
>> yelled greetings and melted his lug wrench.
>> Correct. You melt somebody's lug wrench.
>> Hey, I I just copy them down.
>> Don't explain them. I don't suppose anybody got a license number?
>> Yeah. Wisconsin plates.
>> Oh, we did.
>> I'm checking the owner through DMV now.
>> Oh, then they got it.
>> Mark, >> is it like a ship? Man, all the steady guys must be just blowing his mind.
>> What the hell is that thing? Well, it's sort of an invitation. Major, >> is it the from Voyager 2?
>> You remember that package we sent up with the Voyager probe? There was a gold anodized disc with greetings from Earth in 54 different languages.
>> I got to chill. We do have kind of an open invitation for Earth right now, don't we?
>> We're going to need some gas.
>> Gas >> for the car fuel energy. Uh, >> make it go go go.
>> Okay, got some gas.
>> I wonder what kind of energy he uses.
Ball energy.
>> Here you go.
>> Take it easy.
>> Take it easy.
>> Fill her up.
>> Gas. Gotcha.
>> Remember full serve?
Wait here.
>> Yeah, I know. I have to go to the bathroom. The lady's room.
>> Oh, yeah. Is he just going to like pee his pants? Does he even know what that means?
>> It's when a person has to uh >> empty the tank.
>> Oh, to hell with it. You figure it out for yourself. I'm going.
>> Oh, no. I don't.
Is he just going to follow her in there?
Did that door open for him?
>> Women. Me.
>> Be cool, man. Men, you understand?
>> Well, probably not.
>> Can't get her out, huh?
>> Guess.
>> Well, I know just how she feels.
>> Oh, no. I'm just I'm thinking someone's going to find him out or he's going to get like beat up. He's going to say the wrong thing. But he's probably a good fighter. I'm sure I don't need to worry about him.
>> Every godamn place you go, take it easy up yours.
>> Oh, no.
>> Easy up yours.
>> He's going to fit right in.
>> Oh. Um, hi. Let's go.
>> Uh-oh.
>> Nothing of interest in here.
>> Can't read that. Can't read it or doesn't care.
>> Okay. You want to sign that for me, Miss Hayden?
>> Yeah. I'd probably throw on the radio or something.
>> Kidnapped.
>> What?
>> What does it mean?
>> What is kidnapped?
You want to know what kidnapped is? It's being dragged out of your house in the middle of the night by some whatever you are. So, if you're going to shoot me, go ahead.
>> I don't think he is, but I I don't know.
>> Go ahead.
>> Uh, do he know about guns?
>> I mean, you no harm, Jenny Hayden.
>> Okay, well, that's good. I figured not.
But another note.
>> Your music place is old blue eyes. Why is he here? Oh, start spreading the news.
>> Start spreading the news.
>> That's pretty good.
>> I'm leaving today.
>> New York. New York.
>> Do they sing a lot where you live?
>> Do they even have mouths?
>> Yes, >> they do.
>> We sing.
>> Do you ever get hungry? Empty here? Like a a car needs gas?
>> Yes. His body has a terrible emptiness.
>> Hungry? How is she gonna explain like peeing to him?
>> We will stop at food station. You have hungry, too.
>> I'm starving. I haven't eaten since.
>> Oh my god.
>> Yeah. Does he even know the rules of the road?
>> Oh yikes.
>> Okay.
>> Not the best.
>> Okay. Are you crazy? You almost got us killed.
>> He's like, >> I do know the rules.
>> That was a yellow light back there.
>> She went through a yellow light though, didn't she?
>> I watched you very carefully. Red light stop, green light, go. Yellow light go very fast.
>> That's kind of fair.
>> Do you seriously expect me to tell the president that an alien has landed?
>> Mhm.
>> Assumed the identity of a dead house painter from Madison, Wisconsin.
>> How do they know that?
>> I'm going to ask you now. How could it happen?
>> We think it might be some kind of a cloning deal. Replication of an entire organism from a single cell.
>> We found some hairs from Scott Hayden's head.
>> Correct.
>> I mean, can you clone a living organism from the hair of a dead man?
>> Theoretically, maybe. You mean us in our present state of technology?
>> Yes.
>> We can't do that.
>> No.
>> Well, what the hell are we talking about?
>> We're hypothesizing a technology that probably 100,000 years ahead of us.
>> 100,000 years.
>> We're the ancients, Mr. Fox.
>> Ancients? Technologically, yes.
>> Yeah, we're idiots.
>> I helped put this package together. You know, this was designed so that an intelligent species could get a working knowledge of English.
>> I see.
>> Think of what it would mean to talk to a being from a civilization like that.
Think of what we could learn.
>> I sent greetings.
>> Greetings. There. See, that's what he said to Hind Mueller out on the road.
>> It was also what the cannibals said to the missionary just before he ate him.
>> Yeah. Well, the question in this case is uh who is the missionary and who are the cannibals?
>> Yeah. Are we the bad guys here >> in Arizona? When do you have to be there >> for the rendevu?
>> You see this little star?
>> We call that the sun.
>> Just a little star.
>> When the sun appears mid sky three more times, I must be at Arizona.
>> Three days.
>> What happens if you don't get there in time? Then they will go >> and he's stuck here.
>> What will you do then?
>> Then I will die.
>> Oh, >> understand.
>> Yes, this is important.
>> I hope he's going to say what he's doing here, though.
>> You look for a food station.
>> I could go for a food station right now.
>> Dead deer.
>> Dead deer. Why?
>> People hunt them to eat for food.
>> We're not going to eat that.
>> Do deer eat people?
>> No.
>> Do people eat people?
>> No. Oh, of course not. What do you think we are?
>> Is he using the logic then? Why do people eat tears?
>> You are a very primitive species.
>> Can you bring back to life?
>> Softarted. Cry when you saw Bambi.
>> Who didn't?
>> He doesn't understand. He's not from around here.
>> You don't speak any English, huh?
>> Steer clear of that, Bozo.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Be fine, Bozo.
>> Idiot.
>> Jerk.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> From Denver. Here.
It's south on Interstate 25.
>> He's looking at the deer.
>> Where exactly in Arizona are you supposed to meet your friends?
West of Winslow. See little speck on the map, but there's a crater. Is that where you're supposed to meet them? Where that meteor hit?
>> Oh, >> why do you do this?
>> Well, better safe than sorry, just in case something should happen to me. Um, the credit card for the gas. You know how that works.
>> She's really helping him.
>> Why should something happen to you?
>> Who knows?
>> Things happen.
>> That's um me and Scott on our honeymoon.
A honeymoon is when two people first get married and they go off together after they've fallen in love.
>> You find love.
>> Oh, that's tricky. Love is um the most important thing.
>> It's when you care more for someone else than you do for yourself. But it's not just that. It's it's when someone is a part of you.
>> Scott is dead. He was killed in an accident. When someone you love dies.
>> Too fine.
>> Dude, that's a nice boy.
Don't mind him. He's just learning to speak English. Well, it's got a hell of a start on it. Uh, who's the devil egg on white toast and super burger and two Dutch apple pie with whipped cream.
>> Oh my god, that sounds awesome.
>> I had a wedge of it myself. It's terrific. Enjoy.
>> I'll dig in.
>> A devild egg on white toast. Huh? Okay.
>> Wait. No, no, no. That's your dessert.
Eat that with a fork.
>> She's got to show them everything.
>> You eat that last. Sandwich first, dessert last.
>> These are the rules.
>> Why?
>> It's a good question. I >> I don't know. It's just how it's done.
Does he like it?
>> What's the matter?
>> No.
>> Not for apple pie.
>> Good. Very good.
>> It's terrific.
>> I love apple pie. I could really eat some pie right now.
>> Lincoln, Omaha, Chicago. The bus leaves in 5 minutes.
>> She thinking about running away there.
>> Uh, look, I got to uh go to the >> She did give him all the directions, but I don't think she's going to actually leave him.
>> You know that fell I came in with? Could you give these things to him after the bus leaves? It's just a map and some car keys and a credit card.
>> You sure honey?
>> Yeah, I'm positive.
>> She's taking off.
>> Hey honey, I'm going to go out through the back door right now. That friend of yours, he's out there in the parking lot. Thanks.
>> Is he looking at the deer? Is he going to bring it back to life?
>> Yeah. Now, let him go.
He's very sweet.
That dude's going to be mad.
>> Excuse me, miss. Strike me as a meteor.
I can pick you up with a nice hunch of innocent.
>> A nice hunch. Uh-oh.
>> That son of a >> No. I bet he can fight.
>> What happened to the goddamn deer?
>> She went there to the woods.
>> Okay.
>> Where she belongs?
>> Whoa.
>> Bingo.
>> He doesn't understand. He's a foreigner.
He doesn't speak English.
>> Oh, what?
>> Hey.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Bingo.
Uhoh.
Oh, he's getting jumped. Oh god. Sure.
You lose me in it, boy.
>> Oh yeah, girl. Pick up your garbage and get going.
>> That's right. You heard her. You okay?
>> I thought clones make you a little bit jumpy, Jenny Hayden.
>> You make me a little bit jumpy.
>> She cares about him.
>> Poor guy.
>> Looks better that way.
>> Thank you, Jenny Hayden.
>> Yeah, you're a real bro, Jenny. Poor guy.
>> Part of our friendly service.
>> You're stuck with him now, dude. I wanted to tell you that eastbound bus is about to go. Want me to try to hold it?
>> Mm- She's going to stay with him.
>> Uh, no. No, thank you. Never mind.
Thanks. But, uh, never mind. Good luck >> to Arizona.
>> I'm going to get that bastard. Donnie Bob right now.
>> Donny Bob.
>> Take it easy.
Hey, he used it.
Suckers.
>> Is their fault? The Mustang Son of a Chipman just took off. Anybody get his number?
>> No, it shouldn't be too hard to pick up.
77 Mustang.
>> Yeah, that's true. They're going to be easy to hunt down. Hope this isn't the kind of movie where he dies at the end.
>> That was orange and black 77 with the Wisconsin plates.
>> Oh man. Well, he would not do well in jail.
>> Mr. Sherman, they spotted an orange and black mustache. Wisconsin plates going west near Big Springs >> to the chopper.
>> Scott and I met two winters ago up at Iron Mountain ice skating. I had on this little tight skating outfit. He kept staring at me. One thing led to another a few months later. We're on our honeymoon.
>> So, they only met 2 years ago and then they just got married and they were newlyweds and then he died. Oh my god.
>> Was beautiful.
>> Define beautiful.
>> Beautiful is better than terrific.
>> Yeah. Like how do you describe beautiful?
>> Better than the apple pie. The best.
>> She misses him so much. They got to switch cars. Rende boo lounge.
>> Got to get a couple hours sleep. Just a couple. Okay.
>> Kind of like she should have taken that gun with her.
>> You're not to approach them. Keep them under surveillance till the feds get there.
>> Wait for the feds. They get the 6:00 news and we get the stick.
>> They never get any of the action.
>> Yeah. Well, it doesn't have to be that way. I got a hunch this might just develop into a life-threatening situation.
>> Oh man, they're going to make trouble.
What am I doing? He looks so much like Scott. I I wasn't thinking.
>> You said the nose is different.
>> What?
>> He broke his twice. And there's something else. I don't know. Something spooky about your eyes.
>> Yes.
>> You You remember everything you hear word for word?
>> Everything I hear, everything I see, everything this body feels.
>> H.
>> Believe me, General, I know.
>> He's just changing it by touching it.
Oh, is he going to see some romance?
Classic.
>> I never knew it could be like this.
Nobody ever kissed me the way you do.
>> Nobody.
>> Uh, is he just going to go for it? Oh boy.
>> It's the cops. No. No. No. It's >> none of my business. There's a couple cops trying to [ __ ] the lot.
>> Are they allowed to do that?
>> Quite the diversion.
The bastards ran one on us.
>> Suspects in Orange Mustang are headed south of Big Springs bypass. We are in pursuit.
>> They are not to engage.
>> Oh, he's not just going to fire though, right?
>> No.
>> Jenny Hayden.
>> They shot Jenny.
>> Jenny Hayden.
>> No.
>> Suspects on I 80 proceeding northbound.
Still in pursuit.
>> Oh, this music.
Did he make like a force field? Are they fine?
Whoa, that was cool. But their car is gone.
I feel like he should talk to the SETI guy. I think he'll try to help him.
Maybe not. Chaos. He's been here all right.
They think he's dead. have a couple of people that say they saw him carrying her out of the burning wreckage and then they just disappeared in the smoke.
>> All right, so where did they go? Are they just hiding in this house thing?
It's kind of a good idea. They are hiding in this house thing, right? She got shot. Forgot he can fix her. He can fix her. That's right. But he only has so many of these balls. He's only got two left.
Is she dead and he's going to bring her back to life?
H this music just like all synth synths and chimes.
Yeah. I wonder if she even remembers what happened. Did she die? Maybe he just went on without her.
>> Is he just in here eating pancakes?
That's where I'd be. I do love breakfast.
Is he just hitching a ride? He left her for her own safety, I think. See, he doesn't agree with like the force here.
>> Hey, Mark, you wanted on the horn.
Urgent.
>> On the horn. I say that.
>> Yeah. Hello. I was talking to the police.
>> My name is Mark Sherman. I'm with National Security.
>> I understand you wanted to talk to somebody about kidnapping.
>> You see, there's been a mistake. I just wanted to clear it up. There there hasn't been a kidnapping.
>> I don't know if we can really trust this guy or not.
>> Miss, hold on a second.
>> You looking for a fella? Kind of nice looking.
>> Yeah. Have you seen him?
>> Handsome.
>> He hitched to ride west with our night cook about half an hour ago.
>> Look, I'm hanging up now. I've got to go. Do you know who or what you were kidnapped by?
>> He doesn't want to hurt anybody.
>> That's right.
>> Really? Can't you just leave him alone?
>> Hello.
>> This is like ET. Like they just want to capture him.
>> I need to ride west fast. I'll take you.
Come on.
>> Oh, look at this car. Fast indeed. It's got flames on it.
>> Where'd you line?
>> Line word.
>> Line.
>> Oh, I make maps.
>> Make any money?
>> Sure.
>> I make maps. You want smoke?
>> No.
>> Cost an arm and a leg to raise up kids these days. Arm and leg.
>> Bread, eating, money, and lots of it.
>> That's exactly exactly my reaction when I smoked a cigarette the first and only time as a teenager.
>> You're not from around here, are you?
>> Excuse me.
What the John? Some kind of roadblock, I guess.
>> Roadblock, I guess.
>> You know, you'd probably get by. All right. Just sort of repeating what everyone says. Just like that. Like, for the most part, you could probably make it through most things.
>> Keep these people in line. They're starting to slip around the end.
>> All right. Maybe you can't trust the steady guy.
>> Move to the right. Stay line.
>> Oh, wow. They did go fast. I >> mean, what are they looking for, though?
Do they have a photo of him? They do have a photo of him. No, I got >> you got to help me. Okay. Whoa.
>> Well, that'll work.
If he speeds off, they're just going to chase him, right?
>> That's quite a favor to ask someone. Oh, she's very pretty.
>> I mean, that kid's going to be in trouble, right? Oh, nice.
It worked.
>> His physicality in this role is really something. My god, how did you get here?
>> I hitched the ride with the cook. It was good to see you, Jenny Hayden.
>> He likes her.
>> Nice. It worked.
>> I've done something wrong. Jenny Hayden, >> I wake up alone. You're gone. Not a word, nothing.
>> I think he was trying to keep her out of harm's way.
>> You were right to be with me is not good for your health.
>> Cares about her. could have at least told me where you were going. Said goodbye.
>> Goodbye.
>> Tine goodbye.
>> It's how you tell somebody that you miss them, that you wish them well. That >> I hate goodbyas.
>> Hope her tooth coming in.
>> Oh, look at the little hair.
>> Can anyone have babies?
>> Just women.
>> I understand the reproductive process as you know it.
>> Okay.
>> You have a baby?
>> No.
>> Why not?
>> Cuz her husband died. Scott and I wanted to have a baby. It just turned out I couldn't.
>> Oh, I'm one of those lucky ladies that just can't have one.
>> That's so sad if they really want to have one.
>> Here, I'll blanket it. It's dry.
>> That's nice.
>> [ __ ] >> Better get out those wet clothes. Better get warm.
>> Oh, are we about to have a romance scene? They should cuddle for warmth.
Yeah.
>> Here. Put this on.
She's going to go for it.
Oh my. I wonder if that's so weird for her cuz it's like probably smells and feels like her husband but moves differently. Certainly kisses differently. I would think. I don't think she's really thinking of it as her husband though. She She likes this alien dude.
>> What's going on here? Well, according to our best estimates, speed, course, and trajectory, that object was headed for some place in Arizona. And now intelligence thinks that the visitor is on his way here to make some sort of a rendevous. Wow, they figured it out.
What is this? A table to strap him down.
>> Welcome to planet Earth.
>> For real? That's horrible.
>> He looks pleased with himself.
>> Where are we?
>> I think we are coming to win slow. Sir, >> why didn't you wake me?
>> I like to watch you sleep.
>> He's so sweet.
>> I don't know why. It's strange.
>> The way he talks too is is strange.
>> I think I am becoming a planet Earth person. You have to go back. Isn't there some way you could stay?
>> No, I must go back.
>> If he stays, he'll die, right?
>> But there is something I must tell you.
>> What? He hasn't really told us anything.
>> I gave you a baby tonight.
>> What?
>> Oh, it's impossible. I can't have a child.
>> Well, he is kind of magic.
>> Believe what I tell you.
>> Oh, I believe him.
>> A boy. Baby.
>> A boy.
>> He will be human. The baby of your husband, but also he will be my baby.
>> Oh my god.
>> He will know everything I know. And when he grows a manwood, he will be a teacher.
>> Oh, I got goosebumps.
>> If you do not want this baby, tell me now. I will stop it.
>> She wants it.
>> Gave her baby of her husband and also him. Which is your star? Can you see it from here? I want to show him where his father came from.
>> Yeah. The kid's going to be like an alien human hybrid and know everything that he knows.
>> There. blow in the sky. There >> I see it.
>> You better get dressed. We are coming to Windslow.
>> They have to say goodbye.
>> Oh no. What? Las Vegas.
>> What?
>> That's not Arizona.
>> I think we've gone about 300 miles past Winslow.
>> Dudes, we're still going to be okay.
>> While they're busy doing it, >> all we got to do is rent a car and with a little luck, we'll be back there before noon tomorrow.
>> Yeah, you better hustle.
>> You find giant jackpot.
>> The giant jackpot is a lot of money.
Could he just win it?
>> Gas, bread, an arm and a leg.
>> Where'd you get that? No, no, no, no. We don't have time to fool around with the slot machines now. We got to >> Girl, he could probably win >> my wallet.
>> What is wrong?
>> Where the hell is my wallet? What are we going to do now?
>> He's all right.
>> You don't understand. No credit card, no money, no car.
>> No money. He got this.
Now.
>> Oh, what? No. Hey, >> a handy little talent you got there.
Yeah, he should just win her like a million dollars to raise the kid.
Bought a Cadillac. Huh? All right. How much would a Cadillac have been? So, did he win $500,000 there? Is that what that was? Oh my.
>> What the hell is this about? You're a man of some scientific attainment.
>> See, he doesn't like this either.
>> South of Winslow.
>> I see. Anything else?
>> The Cobra guys were asking about ammunition.
>> Why, Mr. Fox? What the hell ever happened TO GOOD MANNERS? WE INVITED HIM HERE.
>> YES. LOOK, I'm trying to make a point.
So am I. Damn it. You are a GS11 public servant. Anytime that becomes too much of a burden. You can go back to Cornell or wherever the hell it was that we found you. Now, shape up or get out.
>> They can't just know that an alien is here and then just let him walk around either, I guess. Right. But this isn't the way. I I don't know what the way is, but it seems like >> Of course, you still want to be a member of the team. You do, don't you?
>> Yes. Be on the team because everyone's mean.
>> Yes, sir. All right, then. Get going.
Get rid of that damn cigar.
I hope he finds him and lets him go.
>> Got to be coming to the crater any time now. You're going to make it. You're going to go home. And >> then she's just never going to see him again.
>> You want to, don't you?
>> Yes, of course.
>> But he will miss her. Will he come back to see his kid?
>> What's it like up there?
>> It is beautiful.
>> Not like this, but it is beautiful.
There is only one language, one law, one people, no war, no hunger. Strong do not victimize the helpless.
>> That's nice.
>> We are very civilized, but we have lost something. You are all so much alive, all so different.
>> That's true.
>> I will miss the cooks and the singing and the dancing and the eating.
>> Yeah, evolving past eating is lame. You need apple pie.
>> And the other things.
>> I just want him to make his rende and not get killed.
>> There's so much Coke advertisement in this. Wow.
>> Coffee.
>> Dutch apple pie. How about some nice cherry cobbler?
>> That'll be fine.
>> And whipped cream.
>> Yeah, he knows what's up.
>> I want you to try this cherry cobbler.
And if you don't like it, you don't have to pay for it.
>> It's delicious.
>> My wife made it.
>> He's sweet.
>> Do you have somebody a wife like up there?
>> Somebody to love?
>> No.
>> I wish >> she could go too.
>> Is that your Cadillac outside?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, frig. Oh, they better not get him.
Come on. You have to stop it.
I think that was a I'm going to do what it takes to stop this and I might have smoke my last cigar kind of thing. I want this guy to talk to him. I'd >> like to talk to these people alone.
>> Yeah, get out of here.
>> George Fox just called in on the radio.
So to say they're on their way over.
>> You better hurry. His whole life has been leading to this.
>> I'm Mark Sherman. Said the search for extraterrestrial.
>> You found it.
>> There are so many questions that I'd like to ask you.
>> Yes. Let's get some answers.
>> Is there anything I can do for you?
>> You can let him go.
>> Yes.
>> I can't. I'm sorry. Are you supposed to meet someone here? Is that it?
>> Yes.
>> You don't understand. There isn't much time. Please.
>> Why the crater? Have people from your world been here before?
>> Before? Yes. We are interested in your species.
>> Why?
>> You mean some kind of an anthropologist?
Just checking us out.
>> You are a strange species.
>> Correct.
>> Not like any other. And you would be surprised how many there are.
Intelligent but savage. Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.
>> No, let him go, Mr. Sherman, please. If he stays here, he'll die. Can't you see he's dying now?
>> Well, no. He looks the exact same, but I'll take her word for it.
>> Thank you. He's going to do it. Is he going to kiss him?
>> Thank you.
>> Oh, that dude's going to be in so much trouble. He didn't even sneak him out the back or anything either and then been like, "Oh, they got away." Like, all these cops know he let them go.
Maybe it's just to smoke it in his boss's face.
>> Trooper, where are your prisoners?
>> Wrong ones. We had to let them go.
>> You what?
>> You heard him.
>> Sherman, you are finished. I will have you eviscerated for this.
>> Yeah, this dude's career is over.
>> Well, as much as I hate the stoop to symbolism.
>> Yeah, it's a peach.
Oh, that is a crater.
>> Yeah, actually, he doesn't look that good, does he? I hear something. Oh no.
They better not get him.
Look at this. The cavalry. And I'm waiting for like the mother ship to come down or something. Oh yeah, he looks really weak.
They showed me the guns. Would they open fire on him?
>> All units, this is Fox. I want warning fire only. I copy. Here we go.
>> Warning fire.
This music.
I really want him to get away.
>> Mrs. Hay, you and your companion must stop immediately.
>> I don't know if there's anything this guy can do.
>> I repeat, stop where you are. We have orders to open fire.
>> They're not going to stop.
>> We have orders to open.
>> She might die.
>> Last warning. This is >> Did they get them?
What the hell is that?
>> Spaceship. Spaceship. Yeah.
>> The sound.
No. Yeah, he's dying for sure. Wa.
It's like a planet.
These guys just need to land and watch now. There's nothing they can do.
Is he about to get beamed?
I must go.
>> Take me with you.
>> I cannot. Please.
>> You will die there.
>> You can't care.
>> I care.
>> No.
>> Tell me again how to say goodbye.
>> I hate goodbye. Kiss me and tell me you love me.
>> I love you.
>> Never going to see you again, am I?
>> No.
>> No.
>> I love you.
She's going to have his baby.
>> Tell the baby about me.
>> I will help.
>> For what?
>> What should I do with this?
>> The baby will know.
>> The baby will know. Oh my god. Maybe the baby can go there one day. Find his dad.
Oh, >> goodbye, Jenny Hayden.
>> Goodbye.
>> Might be like a little bit of closure for her, too, with her husband. She said it was an accident. And she never got to say goodbye to him and the baby. She's having both of their baby.
The end. Oh, okay. That was Starman. And that was so different than I really thought. Um, like I knew it was a sci-fi John Carpenter. It's called Star Man. I assumed it was sort of an alien or something. And I heard it had some romance in it, but I don't know. It was just like sweeter and subtler in in certain ways than I would have thought.
I sort of thought it might be a little more actiony and sort of like even, you know, like Terminator is a sci-fi with a bit of romance in it, you know, like I was just expecting more action, but I really liked it. It was really, really good. The music was great. The synth all the way through is really, really cool.
And I just read that Jeff Bridges was nominated for an Oscar for this role, which I think is right. I think that feels right. And I even said like it really stood out. His whole physicality just looked like he was wearing the suit of a man, you know, just like imitating being a human. He brought so much to it and just a look of innocence. Even just from the beginning when they show the home movies, he's so animated and he's so human in his expressions and his gestures and things and his facial expressions and then and then he switches and it's he's the alien now impersonating him and it's so different.
his face was a bit more blank as it would be cuz he's not in those gestures, you know, and and yeah, just just a very sweet, naive, innocent kind of alien guy going through our society being like shocked that we killed deer for fun, you know, like is sort of visiting us and just seeing what we're all about and calling us, you know, primitive and savage, which is fair when you think of it from like an advanced enlightened beings way of seeing things. Um, and there they're he explained at the end. I mean, I like that we didn't actually learn that much about him. He was quite mysterious all the way through. And it wasn't really about that, but we did get a little bit of info from him at the end, which I was thankful for. You know, they're they're all one people, one law.
It's very civilized, but he said he feels like they've lost something because they're not all different the way that we are. So, yeah. I mean, I I felt like that was a nice thing to say.
The movie could have been very heavy-handed of like humans are the worst, which like, you know, humans are kind of the worst in this. we're we're chasing him or we're going to strap him to a table and kill him and do an autopsy. And it's like we are we are savage and I think we illustrated that several times in this movie, but he explicitly said it feels like we're missing something and you guys are so different and that's what makes you, you know, beautiful in your own way kind of thing. Yeah, I I just thought that was nice to say that we're certainly not enlightened and we have a long way to go, but in our own way, you know, humans have have their own pluses, I guess, as well. Yeah. It wasn't just like a we are enlightened and better than you. It was it was more than that and I appreciated that. Yeah, I thought Jeff Bridges was really good and I really liked his chemistry with is it Karen Allen? Karen Allen. Karen Allen. Yeah, I thought they were really good together at romanty scene, you know, making out in the train after running through the rain. I mean, well, doing it in the train. And okay, I really I did really enjoy the whole plot line of so now she's pregnant. She couldn't have a kid. She's pregnant with his kid and it's her husband's kid and his kid. I I like that whole thing. I like this. It's It's quite sad. I mean, they're never going to see each other again, but it's also kind of happy. He gets to go home. He's not going to die.
She's going to have a baby, which is what she wants. You know, if she can't get her husband back, I know, you know, at least she has a piece of him now and and a piece of this alien guy that that she has fallen for as well. I like that he gave her the little ball at the end and said, you know, the the kid will know what to do with it. I like to imagine then that the kid will grow up, the mom will tell him the truth and then the kid one day, maybe the kid can live longer or something and, you know, the mom will grow old and and be gone and then the kid will go off into the stars to find his dad. That's sort of the lore now in my head. I don't believe there's a sequel to this, but if there is, do let me know. But yeah, I just thought this was a really sweet kind of tender sci-fi, and I like that. It's nice to see sometimes a sci-fi that is a little more subtle, subdued, or something just a little more sweet and sensitive. I'm used to seeing sci-fi action is is a is a thing always. Um, unless it's super hard sci-fi and then it's more like let's just science it up. But this was just something else. It was just it was sort of, you know, like Cocoon. It's just like a sci-fi, but it's also very sweet, heartwarming kind of story. And I I really liked it. So, yeah. Let me know what you guys think of this one. I'm dying to know. I just I really liked it.
I thought it was very sweet. I very much enjoyed it. Thank you guys so much for watching. I really appreciate it. I had a great time. I hope you had a great time, too. And I will see you next time.
Bye, guys.
