Heat waves are characterized by sustained periods of above-normal temperatures, typically caused by high-pressure systems that create clear skies and trap heat near the surface. In this May heat wave affecting Las Vegas, temperatures reached 104°F with the first 100-degree day of the year occurring on Friday, demonstrating how heat domes can push temperatures well above seasonal averages for extended periods.

May Heatwave Brings Above 100-Degree Temperatures to Las VegasAdded:
All right, let's send it over to Kendall over at the weather center this morning and the heat are sure popping up on us here a little early. [laughter] Yeah, we're going to be on standby for yet another triple digit day. We ushered in the first 100 degree day of the year on Friday and the heat is set to continue to climb hour by hour for the rest of this morning. We'll push from the 70s to the 80s between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning, the 90s hitting our forecast before even 11:00 a.m. under bright sunny skies. Your forecast high for today 104 degrees. That is set to come between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. The sun goes down and looking ahead towards gradual cooling headed into tomorrow's forecast more of the same. You'll be starting out your day headed into tomorrow in the low to mid-70s, which is above normal for this time of year as this May heat wave does continue hitting the peak of the heat today and tomorrow.
Starting out with a live look outside courtesy of our sunset camera. Quiet day out there. Temperatures right now as you step out the door into those mid-70s.
Your gradual climb on up again with those current conditions showing we've got clear skies not only for us here in the Las Vegas Valley, but a good portion of the entire region. As this heat dome does continue. Now, we're still at the point of the day where we're going to start to nudge these numbers down until the sun gets on up and then that's when we'll springboard up into those 90s and triple digits. 82 degrees by the time you're dropping off the kids this morning. So, it's going to be a hot one out there for those little ones as well starting out their day into the 80s with triple digit heat expected by the time you'll pick them on up. A breeze is going to gradually pick on up hour by hour as well pushing those gusts to about 30 mph range for this afternoon to evening. Same deal. We'll calm down the wind late tonight into early tomorrow morning before a very similar timeline.
Out of the south to southwest that wind will blow to about peak gusts of 35 mph speeds. Satellite radar showing we've got clear skies not only for us here in southern Nevada, but a good portion of these western states. High pressure still parked firmly in place. It is going to start to get nudged out, though, by this low, currently spinning out in the Pacific. As it starts to move inland, it'll tighten the pressure gradient, bringing on the breeze today through Wednesday, but also some alleviating colors, those dark oranges and reds, will start to lighten on up, meaning temperatures will climb on down a little bit more closer towards normal conditions as we do look ahead towards the middle and end of your work week.
Here at Fox 5, we've got the First Alert calendar, putting the next 2 weeks in view, highlighting the days with the most impactful weather. Today and tomorrow are First Alert weather days.
Record highs are possible. We're hitting the hottest days of this heat wave, which started late last week, and is set to continue with the hottest temperatures today into tomorrow along with the breeze that'll take you through your midweek forecast. Highs in the 90s will return by Wednesday, and there will be smooth sailing within that range headed into your weekend, breezy at times on Saturday the 18th, and then next week, the last day of the school year expected on Friday the 22nd with a breeze that'll take you into the following weekend, the 23rd and the 24th. Our flashing red days, our First Alert weather days again for today into tomorrow, we're going to compete with those records. Along with the breeze again at times, it's going to pick on up afternoon to evening hours. Peak gusts today to about 30 to 35 mph range, with that 30 mph gust taking you between your Monday, Tuesday to Wednesday forecast.
We'll calm down the wind, and then we'll start to see it pick right back up again on Saturday headed into your weekend.
95° and nearly 10° drop in our temperatures between your Tuesday and Wednesday forecast highs, even cooler headed into your Thursday, the coolest day of the next 7, but in the 90s, I don't know if cool is the right word to describe. Your temperatures well above normal for this time of year. The temperatures in the 90s do return and continue, I should say, headed into your weekend forecast. Approaching the century mark by Saturday, but forecast high officially is expected to be 98° under crystal clear skies. We'll be right back.
