This analysis accurately diagnoses the creative decline that occurs when intimate character studies are sacrificed for the sake of hollow, large-scale spectacle. It is a sharp reminder that narrative depth remains far more compelling than generic political intrigue or visual excess.

This Isn’t the Daredevil We Loved - Fireside DiscussionHinzugefügt:
I mean, the whole scene with I don't even remember her name. The chick Matt dated in Born Again season one.
>> I Yeah, that that scene I just like not I do not care about the story line at all.
>> She choked Buck. I was like, this should have been cut.
>> This shouldn't have even been written.
>> I don't know why this story line is in the show.
>> I don't know why she's still in the show. I don't care about this girl. I don't even remember her name.
>> I don't care about her trauma. Yeah, >> she wasn't in like she hasn't been in three episodes. I'm like, like what's crazy to me is that Karen Paige from season 1 of the original show, a core character, got less screen time in this episode than freaking I'm a choke buck cuz I have trauma girl.
>> I'm sticking this clip at the beginning of this freaking episode.
>> That is insane.
All right, Grant. All right, Drew. We are 68 of the way through this.
>> One could say 3/4 >> season. One could say 3/4s, but here at Stole My Line, we like precise fractions. So, we're going to go 68 68s.
>> Eighths makes sense. We have eight episodes.
>> Um, how are you feeling?
>> About the same.
>> Yeah. Okay. Yeah, that's kind of what I expected you to say.
>> See, I want this show to make me love it more.
>> Yeah.
>> And I I still only like kind of like it.
>> And I will say after last episode, I was ready to love it.
>> Same. I I was I was open-minded.
>> I will say >> and it kind of still didn't >> This episode kind of felt like a bit of a reversion back to the Disney Plusified edgy MCU that we have in Daredevil.
>> Taylor Swifting, >> right? I I literally I thought about your analogy multiple times while I watched this episode. I'm like Grant Grant is on to something.
>> And like I think we've we've probably beat a dead horse in this series, but this show has some great moments and like nuggets of you can see that there was a golden idea or like the idea like could have been just like the Netflix show >> 100%.
>> And then it's just really not. There was a bunch in this episode that I'm like, "That's a phenomenal idea."
>> Yeah.
>> And the execution was >> lackluster.
>> Par to subpar.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I would I would agree. Hit a bogey on this one.
>> Hit a bogey.
>> Um I don't know. Well, welcome back to Soul My Line, a Fireside Film and Television podcast. Fireside Film Podcast where we also talk about TV. I'm Grant.
>> I'm Drew.
>> We're talking about episode six of Daredevil Born Again season 2, which is >> season five.
>> Five and a half. Kind of. It >> who knows at this point. It's so hard to keep track of.
>> But we're here with uh Charlie Cox's Matt Murdoch. Yeah. And >> the whole gang.
>> Whole gang.
>> Vincent and Offrio's Wilson Fisk. Um >> this is the fallout after Vanessa's death. Spoilers, >> but not really. If you're here, you don't I'm not a spoiler warning for the last episode.
>> We're going to go ahead and talk about probably spoilers for this episode.
>> It's true. Um, so if you haven't watched episode 6 yet, maybe watch that, then come back here. Um, but if you're here, thanks for being here. Hit that subscribe button if you haven't before.
Send us maybe to a friend that also likes movies and TV. Could be huge.
Comment >> what you thought of this episode. Drew, what did you think of this episode in full?
>> I look, here's what I cared about off of episode five.
Fisk, Matt Murdoch, and like the the implications of Vanessa's death. You want to know what we didn't get a lot of? Fisk kind of. I mean, Matt is in this episode.
>> I was Yeah. Okay. Go.
>> And the fallout of Vanessa's death.
>> I would say that's I actually differ a little bit.
>> Okay. Okay. Okay.
>> The the opening shot with the funeral was good and you start to see Fisk lose it, >> right? I think that's great. And no, I do think that wasn't super carried throughout the episode. Like that was like, oh wow, it's going down. No, it's not.
>> Yeah.
>> And then it picks back up.
>> And at the very end, we have a moment with Matt and Kingpin. That's sick.
>> Yeah. That's that's the best part of the episode.
>> It's the fluff and the the filler in the middle that killed me.
>> Yeah. Killed me.
>> I agree.
>> Specifically, the vigilante riot against Fisk.
>> Yeah. Yeah. like that that was I'm going to go ahead and say that was my least favorite part of the whole episode.
Potentially maybe the whole series so far.
>> And I'm not going to tell you what show this is from. And you might be able to guess cuz you're a relatively smart cookie. Um but you haven't seen this show.
>> Oh gosh.
>> Disney has already done that riot scene almost exactly. I'm gonna say the title of the episode and I tell you what show.
The Gorman Massacre.
>> Oh, this is andor season two. Okay.
Don't Wait, wait. Am I right? Yeah, you're right.
>> I have I've seen season one. I haven't seen season two yet. Please don't kill me. I will watch Andor season two.
>> This is like I mean this is kind of spoilers low-key for Andor season 2. So if you haven't seen or season two, >> I'm actually I'm legitimately cover audience. This is shot forshot what happened in Andor season 2. I mean the cop pops the bad guy and then blames it on the good guys. Exactly what happens. Complete copout. Lazy writing.
played out. All right, we're good.
>> Okay, thanks. I think I still caught up on what you were saying. No, it's okay.
I I I still haven't revisited.
>> I mean, that show's also been out for like two years.
>> No, I know. I I that was really for my own sanity. Um, no, I I I did feel like this was a little and this is the issue I've had with the entire season and really the entire show is that the scope is too big. And I will harp on this.
This is my biggest issue with the show.
I've landed on this is that I love the characters, specifically the main characters and some of the side characters are great. Um, specifically the stuff with Daniel and BB is good.
Um, I think the whole martial law thing, the whole anti-visual antiy thing and now this whole Riot thing that is too big for me and I know it's trying to be in the MCU and I know it kind of makes sense with the characters.
>> I don't want that. Is that bad to say?
Like I kind of signed up for this, but like >> I I have an amendment that I would like to propose.
>> All right, propose to your concept.
>> I agree with you.
>> I I think the first half I liked being big, but now that Vanessa is dead, >> I want more of a character study of Fisk versus Matt.
>> Oh yeah.
>> And like I again, we had it kind of in in the last five minutes, but >> Well, and really last episode was a little more understated. % >> that's what and I know that I had issues with the last episode but that's what the show should be.
>> Yeah, I agree.
>> Like give me those moments.
>> We don't need all these huge spectacle moments. No one cares about that. I don't care about that. Now political intrigue and people trying to, you know, kind of make power moves and stuff. I'm down for that. That was great. That was awesome. Just when we got it's really the riot scene that was killing me.
>> I honestly feel like the Andor comparison isn't horrible. Like in general, like this feels like the MCU's version of Andor, but it just it feels like a a cheap carbon copy. I mean, it's trying to be like a a political thriller.
>> Yeah.
>> In in like a a spectacle universe.
>> This isn't that's not even a great >> Star Wars MCU, but like Daredevil Born again is it has some great moments.
Fight scenes are incredible. The spectacle is still here. The entertainment value is also still here, but for what it's trying to do, it is not succeeding.
>> Yeah, I I completely agree. And I think like there's a reality where it could really work, especially where Matt is a lawyer, >> where we have Matt Murdoch, the lawyer, in the show about a lawyer superhero.
>> Um, if he was trying to take down Fisk from his court work, which is >> Well, there needs to be duality though.
No, there does 100%.
>> That's what I'm saying. There's none right now. It's just Matt Murdoch the superhero.
>> Yep.
>> Which I love, >> but it's you're losing a little bit of what the show was. And I like I know shows can evolve and change and whatever, but like I think it's lost a little bit of its core. And that's >> I think the scope paired with the lack of focus on what really made Daredevil so good, specifically when it was on Netflix, like that is killing me right now.
>> Yep. I agree.
I am going to get off my soap box about this.
>> No, I I think you're right.
>> Tell me more of your thoughts.
>> Okay. Should we get into some stuff we liked?
>> Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it.
>> I actually really like Daniel and BB.
>> Yes. I I would say they are a strong part of the show right now.
>> This section of the episode focused on them. I was intrigued.
>> No, I was good.
>> I was like, this is like Daniel.
>> I like Daniel.
>> I kind of like BB, but I like her more as a foil to Daniel.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I I get >> I I don't I like Daniel as a character.
I I am intrigued in watching him.
>> Um yeah, the the tension at the end of their dinner was intriguing.
>> Yeah, their their confrontation was pretty um >> pretty intense.
>> I liked Karen's kind of breakdown.
You we talked before. He did not.
>> We have to process this cuz I'm not sure how I feel about it and I I know that there's context in this. So, I don't entirely hate the move. I do think maybe what irked me was how she like went to the riot or the the protest or whatever.
>> Okay.
>> And I didn't like that was where her mind went. Like I don't like that she's like we should maybe kill people. That conversation was great. That conversation with her Matt awesome. Very fair for her to be like I wish I had told you to kill Fisk and we wouldn't be in this situation, right?
>> Yep.
>> Like Yeah. Completely fair.
>> I think the fact that she's like I'm going to solve things my own way. You're like hold on here. like with the projector thing.
>> Yeah. And like I understand that again I understand where she's coming from. I'm I think I'm still processing this is maybe where I'm coming from.
>> But I don't like that she was just like f all of our values cuz you're like >> well she didn't though.
>> But she kind of did. She was like I think you should kill. And Matt's like no. And I know that there's like it it was it wasn't that black and white. I think there's more depth.
>> I still think it was a little like I don't think it was character assassination, but it just felt so I think maybe the buildup felt a little out of left field, too. Like we haven't spent as time with character.
>> Well, this is true. This is true.
>> And so when this all bubbles up, I'm like all I know that she's been doing this entire season is wearing wigs and punching punching bags.
>> That's all I've known about her this whole season. And like yes, it makes sense and there's context, but I don't know. I think maybe a few too many things rub me wrong.
>> But I also I mean I feel like we've had this conversation of like Karen's like, "Hey yo, we should kill." Matt's like, "No, we shouldn't." Probably three times within Born Again.
>> We had it in at the finale of season 1.
We've had it again in season 2 and then we had it in this episode, >> which I think is is a cool thing for a show to explore. I'm not trying to discredit Daredevil for touching on like where% >> where's the no kill rule get broken and should it ever >> but I feel like we're kind of like treading on already treaded ground.
>> Well, and I am going to compare this show to Invincible, but there's a specific reason.
>> Okay.
>> Is because Invincible addresses this very thing.
>> True.
>> Multiple times it does.
>> And what Invincible does is it continues to put Mark in different situations that challenges this no kill rule. We are putting Matt in the same situation literally every other episode and he's like, "No, I'm not going to break the no kill rule." Now, did he kind of try to kill Bullseye? Yes.
>> It's It's not like every single time.
It's true.
>> But for the most part, it's not really anything that's really going to push Matt to that breaking point the way that Mark has been pushed to his breaking point. Invincible.
>> I think if Karen had killed Bullseye, mega interesting.
>> Yeah. Yeah, that would be crazy.
>> That would have been insane. But then she didn't. or well I mean she tried but Daredevil stopped her >> which is very >> that that was a cliche moment.
>> It was very cliche.
>> I was like okay that doesn't shock me at all.
>> Nope.
>> Uh I also felt no tension cuz I was like Daredevil's probably going to walk in the room and say stop.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Um okay. I'm going to actually say something I liked.
>> And I know that we kind of already touched on it but I did like that there was >> an immediate impact for Vanessa's death.
>> Okay. like Vanessa died, we feel it.
>> Mhm.
>> And obviously like duh, we should have felt it. But I think going into the funeral scene, I think the scene where he kills the doctor at like the very beginning, oh wow, okay, he's he's breaking.
>> I know he didn't care throughout the episode, but then the scene that we get with Matt and Wilson at the end was great in that fight scene was great.
>> And so >> I think the overall throughine of that carrying throughout this episode was really good.
>> I kind of disagree. I don't think he like to me it didn't feel like a through line. It felt like like I wanted Fisk to be kind of the focal point of the episode.
>> No, I think he should have been. I think he >> and he definitely wasn't. I mean the whole scene with I don't even remember her name. The chick Matt dated in Born Again season one.
>> I Yeah, that that scene I just like not I do not care about the story line at all.
>> She choked Buck. I was like this should have been cut.
I'm like like what's crazy to me is that Karen Paige from season 1 of the original show, a core character, got less screen time in this episode than freaking I'm a choke butt cuz I have trauma girl.
>> I'm sticking this clip at the beginning of this freaking episode.
That is insane.
>> Oh, Daredevil, you pushed us through our breaking point.
>> Disney, what are we doing?
>> Yeah, I know. That's fair. It's bad writing, but there's good writing. And >> there is like it this show is such a mixed bag. It's crazy.
>> Yeah, I think this is this is the most baffling show I think maybe we've watched on this podcast.
>> I think it might be >> Wait, here's a question. If you've been around Soul My Line for a minute, we did a set of Stranger Things episodes where we kind of ended up crapping on season 5 because season five is >> season 5 is garbage.
>> It's bad.
>> It's horrible.
>> Uh, >> this is better than season five.
>> Well, okay. Wait, would you No, no, that's not why I'm asking.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> This is Yeah, this is better than season five of Stranger Things. That's fine.
>> Is this more of a mixed bag slash or is this more divisive >> in your mind? Are you like than season five of Stranger Things >> like in general or for us?
>> For you? For us? Uh, I'm going to say no.
>> Okay.
>> Well, define divisive.
>> I don't know. I It's It's too late. I'm not defining terms right now.
>> Okay.
>> I do think that I cared a little bit more about Stranger Things, so the failure maybe hit me harder, >> right? I mean, I agree with that, but also >> that's like our entire childhood.
>> Yeah, >> that sucks. That sucks, >> bro. I'm like, I'm still angry for the fact that Stranger Things >> We're just mad on this episode. Stole my line.
Um, >> yeah, this show is a is >> like it it is it is truly bad. And like what's even crazier to me is that Disney saw the feedback from season 1 where they said it's a mixed bag, Disney, here's what we liked. Here's what we don't liked. They were like, >> and then they just did it again.
>> I do think this season is stronger than one.
>> I agree. Yes, I agree. I agree.
>> I still think it's a miss. It's like if it's stronger than one, it is.
>> It's like one step up on the 32.
>> It's like the season took a little bit of creatine, >> but like not a lot >> every other day. Half a scoop. It's It's not really helping. Um >> but like it's the thought that counts, I guess.
>> Yeah.
>> It's like, oh, it it thinks it's stronger. Um >> do you have an analogy for this episode?
>> I do have an analogy, but I kind of like this crazy analogy right now.
>> Okay, I think that's >> maybe that'll end up being my season 2 analogy. Here's my analogy for the show.
Have you ever eaten a casserole, Drew? I know the answer is yes.
>> Yes.
>> Have you ever eaten a casserole? This and the casserole is like fine. Like, >> right.
>> Maybe lasagna.
>> Well, hold on. You We've hated on You've hated on lasagna on this podcast before.
Let's not have >> Yeah.
>> When have I hated on lasagna?
>> I think it was like a holiday episode where we talked about >> I don't like lasagna.
>> I know.
>> Okay, back to casserles. What are we talking about right now, >> guys? It's like midnight.
>> You are just with us on this midnight right now. I hope you're laughing. Um, you're eating a casserole.
>> Yeah, I am.
>> And it's a fine casserole. It's like not one grave, but your mom made it and you love your mom% >> just like we love Marvel.
>> Well, I think I love my mom more than Marvel.
>> This is an analogy, right? I'm sorry.
Just stick with okay.
>> No, that's fair. That's >> Oh, wait. I just keep talking.
>> Uh, we're eating this casserole and you just you get some bites, you're like, "This is really good." Then you just crunch something that you're like you're just like that should not be in this casserole. Yeah. You just take a bite of something and it crunches really weird on your teeth and you're like that doesn't sit right.
>> Or like you get another bite like there's way too much seasoning on that.
>> That's how this episode and really this show at large feels right now.
>> But you love your mom so you >> but you love your mom and honestly you love your fan base. Um fan base is a loose term. We love your listeners. It's so you're going to eat this casserole.
>> Um, >> no, we'll be honest with you guys.
That's that's that's midnight honesty for you.
>> Yeah, we're It is late on Stole My Line.
Uh, I think >> I think that's a perfect analogy.
>> Like specifically the scene where Yeah, that random lady from season one was choking Pug. I was just like, what are we doing?
>> Like what is happening?
>> I This is going to sound crazy. This is This is a huge pause moment. I was uh I was watching the show on my phone and I have lost my AirPods. I don't know where they are and my family like my brothers walked upstairs during that scene and if you listen to that scene with just your ears it is like >> pretty sus >> female moaning.
>> Yep.
>> And in some in another context you could be like what are you watching right now?
>> You should not be watching this Grant.
>> And so I had to like show my brother my phone be like I promise this is not what it looks like.
>> It's not weird.
>> We're good. We're good. It still does not fit this show, but it's not that.
>> No, it shouldn't be here, but it's not what you think it is.
>> Um, hope that's a funny story for you on Stole My Line, a Fireside Film Podcast.
Drew, where where do we land on this episode?
>> I mean, it it is this whole show is a mixed bag, but this episode maybe it's because we came off an episode where I had hope.
>> Yeah. It was a stronger episode >> and I was like, "Oh, like this could be going somewhere." Yeah. And then I was like, frick, we're back to just classic Disney.
>> And Wonderman was so good, guys. Like there's >> I know >> Marvel at its best can be really good, but Marvel as a whole is kind of a mixed bag right now.
>> Yeah. I mean, since Endgame, for sure.
>> And so this this just kind of feels in line with what Marvel's been doing since Endgame. Yeah.
>> Yeah. This is tragic.
>> Well, >> are you excited for episode seven and eight?
We kind of got some like, oh, episode seven and eight are really good.
>> I know. Well, I guess here like they they've captured Karen, >> so yes. Ooh.
>> I wonder what's going to happen.
>> I I think I am I am moderately intrigued.
>> I would say I was more excited last episode than I am this time.
>> I had a moment. I was like, "Oh, is he going to shoot Karen?" I was like, "No, they're not going to do that." Even though the guy who is holding Karen at gunpoint literally just shot somebody else.
>> And like he has no reason not to shoot.
Well, >> Karen on site.
>> Has Fisk told them to bring them in alive? Maybe. If that's true, I retract my statement. But this guy has proven again and again >> that he does not care about the rules.
>> Doesn't care about the rules.
>> I don't even know his name. I don't know his name.
>> Like that is the two character points we have for this guy. He just shot his own guy two seconds ago.
>> If Karen had just kept her wig on, man, would have solved everything.
>> But it's okay.
>> Yeah. Like it's it's just little moments like that of like if you really dissect it, you're like this does not make complete sense.
>> Those are my last >> which is fine. But yeah, anyway, you were saying Karen's captured.
>> Yeah, I would say I am out of 10. I am 5.1 intrigued.
>> I would say I'm 4.9.
>> Yeah. Okay, I think that's fair.
>> So, we are half intrigued.
>> We are 50% intrigued.
>> But hey, we're going to hold out hope that episodes seven and eight are really good.
>> I hope they're incredible. I hope they're season one Netflix level incredible.
>> We sound like we don't want this show to succeed. We do. We want a good TV show.
>> I really do.
>> It's just not happening. I don't know why. I don't know why. I don't all the good casserole ingredients were in the pantry.
>> Yep.
>> What are we doing? Oh man, >> it's true. Well, >> invincible's tomorrow.
>> Finale.
>> Finale of Invisible is tomorrow.
>> Let's freaking go. Verites are on Earth.
Actually, at the time of watching, >> yeah, you you might have already seen it. It's out. We haven't seen it.
>> We're going to review it tomorrow.
>> We're dropping an episode tomorrow. So, >> I This has honestly been like an okay appetizer for a really good meal like week in week out. Like, we've been able to eat this.
>> We're like, well, Daredevil's mid again, but invincible.
>> But invincible. Unfortunately, we have two more episodes of Daredevil with no.
>> It's true.
>> So, that's unfortunate, but you know, >> invincible tomorrow.
We got Michael the movie.
>> Michael, >> not the show, the movie. We do both.
>> Michael is shaping up to be I'm not even kidding. Michael is shaping up to be the most divisive movie of 2026.
>> It's It's April.
>> Have you seen the reviews?
>> No.
>> Drew's been working all day.
>> I've been I'm just going to tell you right now.
>> Okay, hit me.
>> It opened at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.
>> Okay.
>> People are saying Jafar is great.
>> Yeah. People are saying this this is the most basic biopic. Whatever you would think a sanitized Michael Jackson biopic would be, this is it.
>> Okay.
>> There are great moments. Super entertaining at points.
>> Very flat and hollow at other points.
>> Kind of sounds like an episode of Daredevil.
>> Yeah, kind of. I'm going to put a giant asteris.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> Here's the drama. They wrote and shot a different ending >> that gets into the allegations.
>> Yeah. And legally they found out we cannot show this in the way that we did it. And so they had to rewrite the ending. And now it is getting bombed for them sanitizing the movie. But they literally in the original version of the movie they didn't sanitize it >> and I have no idea how to feel.
>> Intriguing. I have thoughts.
>> It's a it's a And most audience members are not going to know that backstory for the movie.
>> Yeah, it's true. Like they they literally have said what they did.
Anyway, >> we'll get into it on what? Friday.
That's when that episode. Yeah, Friday.
Friday. Friday. Friday.
>> Friday. And then we're we might take the weekend off.
>> Yeah, low key.
>> We're tired >> this week. This week has been insane.
>> Uh, thanks for sticking with us, guys, on this episode of Stole My Line, a Fireside Film Podcast. This is a little bit more of an intimate episode. We're just talking.
>> We're just talking. We're tired.
>> There's less structure. It's been a long day.
>> We're going to edit this.
>> Yeah, we are.
>> Thanks for sticking with us this week.
We are going to have a very well planned out fun episode for the invincible finale.
>> Maybe throw some brain rod in there.
It's going to be great. Um, and we're going to talk about Michael and I'm excited about that. If you haven't subscribed, please subscribe.
>> You should.
>> Um, and let us know what you think of this. Are we hating too much? There have been some people who've commented saying this show is great.
>> And like I will say this again, entertainment value is here. If that's what you're here for, lots of it here.
And there's going to be an instinct for some people to comment and be like, "Dude, you're just hating it. Chill out.
It's Daredevil."
>> It's also not. I I will fight if that's you. Look, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Batman have some of the most depth of any 21st century fictional character. There should be depth in their in their TV show.
>> Rain it in. Rain it in >> in their TV show or movie or whatever.
They should have depth as characters.
>> Yeah, that's fair. That is fair.
>> Okay.
>> Be somewhere in the middle on that. They should have depth. The show should be good. Yes, I agree.
>> Also, the fact that we had three good seasons, specifically a very good, >> right, >> first season on Netflix, >> it makes this feel worse.
>> Y, >> it it's it's a cheap copy.
>> Yep.
>> So, but we're going to talk about the last two episodes, and we're excited.
>> We'll be here every Tuesday.
>> We have a Star Wars marathon coming up.
>> We have Devil Wars Prada 2, which my future wife is very, very excited for.
She she has been sending me reels about it. We're also going to review the first one. So, >> we are.
>> Yeah, that'll be an older movie. Get thrown into our early 2000s.
>> Well, what year was >> I don't know.
>> Um, while I look this up, Drew, do you have anything you want to say to our lovely, lovely Embers?
>> I don't know. Is Embers, >> how's that feel?
>> Embers.
>> Do y'all want a name? Is that >> We had We had one person comment asking for a name for our listeners and I don't want a name.
>> Is it corny?
>> I think I don't know.
>> 2006. Okay, that's not really old. Uh, most popular comment of the next month, name related, will be the name of our audience.
>> No one is watching this.
>> Yeah, no one's made it this far.
Retention Retention is down.
>> That's okay.
>> All right, let's close out this episode.
>> I'm going to I'm going to keep Embers for right now.
>> Yeah.
>> And we'll see where it goes.
>> Yeah.
>> But let us know your thoughts on your name and also this episode of Daredevil.
We're going to get out of here. Please, please take a break and enjoy.
But probably not dear novel.
