This systematic breakdown offers a refreshing departure from typical fandom bias by grounding K-pop rankings in formal musical theory and production analysis. It successfully elevates the conversation from mere subjective taste to a more rigorous, technical appreciation of the genre.

Old Man Ranks Babymonster Billlie Le Sserafim And Nmixx Volume 04 | Music Analysis & RankingAdded:
[music] Hey, welcome to the channel or welcome back to the channel, whichever may be the case for you. My name is Matt. I am clearly an old man as you can now see on the screen. And I do enjoy ranking things, especially K-pop discoraphies, and I'm having so much fun with this uh second four group ranking that we did.
We did one before with Espa Sy. IV and Blackpink. This time around we're doing inmix Billy Lerapim and Baby Monsters.
So, welcome Monsties, welcome fear not.
Welcome Believe, Welcome Enter. We really appreciate you being here, stopping by. You've made this series a pretty good success and I've really enjoyed uh your comments, your suggestions, and because I've really enjoyed your suggestions, that's what we're going to do today. I've written down everything that has been suggested from any of these groups and I've put them on this terrible looking uh let's see here it is uh this terrible looking just notepad list like this. But I also found a specific kind of uh random drawer called the wheel of names.
Uh sorry for the ads that are on this thing. Uh, and I've really enjoyed uh the thought of just letting the wheel decide out of your suggestions. Now, every time the same song was suggested, I went ahead and read it wrote it down.
Uh, like you know, you'll see she multiple times. It was the one that I got most requested for Baby Monster. Uh, but all of the songs that have been done, uh, any mention of a song has been included in these lists. In the meantime, let's take a look at our current list. First, we have Dash uh being at number one. I'll just kind of slowly scroll through these. We've only got 12 so far. Ginga Minga Yo is at the bottom. Uh but this is a really good list. I had a real a lot of fun last week. Uh four of our songs made the top five and that's uh really cool for me.
Uh so I'm going to do the drawing right here right now so that we can figure out what songs we're going to be doing.
We'll be going in the order that uh they finished last week. So we'll be doing inmix then laser then Billy then ba baby monster. So let's take a look at the inmix songs that I have from your suggestions. We got a couple pilions.
We've got a couple podiums. We've got a couple blue valentines.
Uh this is going to be a fun one. So, we'll just randomly paste those in here.
We now have a a wheel moving.
And I'm going to hit this button right here. And we're going to see which song we're going to do today out of the Inmix songs.
[applause] Run for the Roses gets today's video.
And here comes Larapim's pick.
Smart.
Who's next? Billy.
Let's refresh again so that it's spinning before I hit the button. Okay.
assign [applause] to the anonymous.
So, uh, baby monsters last. And here we go.
Like that is going to be our winner this time around. Excellent.
>> [applause] >> Okay, you suffered through all of that and you got to suffer through this, too.
I sometimes pause videos. I often talk over the top of videos. I sometimes play over the top of videos and I definitely sometimes play while I'm pausing. So, those are all things to watch out for if that's not for you. Totally get it. You know, I'm not for everybody. Uh, but thanks for giving the video a shot up to this point. Hopefully, you'll stick around. Here we go. Inmix.
Run for the roses. All right, let's do it.
>> Performance video [singing] >> cords will be above my head >> or licks if it's all licks.
fight.
[music and singing] [music] [singing] >> I love the sound.
>> So far, we're just on one chord, though.
>> I won't be transcribing the fiddle. I don't know how to transcribe fiddle.
want to make us move. Feel like we're not alone. We run for roses.
>> Oh, those harmonies on Run for the Roses are great.
We like you're not alone. We run for roses.
[music] [music and singing] All right, hang on just a second. What key are we in? F#.
>> Yeah. Uh, the chorus was interesting. I think So a D uh to F sharp to B minor maybe to G.
Very interesting progression and I love the way the melody fits in that progression.
Very cool. The vocals are outstanding. I mean that's kind of a given, right?
Hi Lily.
[music] Okay, that's K. I'm sorry. That's Caillou, right? I always get her and Jiu mixed up, but I think Ji was shorter, right?
[music] >> It's got this nice country vibe to it.
It's really cool.
>> And then it's just jamming. Hi, >> Sen. Roses [music] killing it as usual.
[music] [singing] [music] >> I love the sound of Ba's voice. It's just so cool. [music] >> [music] [singing] >> All right, I hope I'm saying your name right.
[music] >> Veget [music] [music] for roses. R for roses. R [music] for roses.
>> [screaming] >> Oh, >> Lily, you're showing off.
>> Very well. She's showing off.
[music] >> I love that face sound. It's what makes it [music] >> not be country.
>> Hi, Awan. I didn't say hi to you.
down. [music] We are [singing] [music] daddy.
[music and singing] >> Nice way to end it, too. God, I love that harmony on Run for the Roses. So good.
Hi, JP.
outstanding song. Um, my only problem with it, there's not not much of a change in it. A lot of it's just one chord and the rest of it's four chords uh in the chorus, but it's still enough of a change that would keep me invested in playing the song, that's for sure.
Uh, certainly the instrumental changes are cool, the guitar licks are cool. I don't understand fiddle playing at all.
It's the one thing that used to always baffle me. A guy would come into a jam session with the fiddle and I think, "Oh, great. It's gonna be loud and out of tune and noisy and then he just play his ass off like Marco Connor or something." And I'm always amazed by fiddle players.
They always sound great. If they're good enough to get on his level, of course they sound great. U Marco Connor was a fantastic fiddle player that played for a lot of guys in Nashville for many, many years. All right. Uh let's rank this thing.
Okay.
Uh I will start at the top and work my way down even though it might be a little bit of a journey. And again, the song production is great. The vocal performances are great. I even like the lyrics. Um you know, we're stronger together. We can do this.
Um but I know I like Dash better. Again, Dash is the kind of music that I would seek out if I was going to listen to music. Uh, Ring by Ring is compositionally better for me.
Impurities, uh, has a cooler vibe.
Unonia is harmonically superior to me.
Billionaire is very, very good.
And I'm going to keep it at number five.
Batter up is stronger in a different way, but but but I think I'm going to put Oops. two times. There we go. I'm going to put Run for the Roses currently at number six because I appreciate it a little more than Better Up and I know that I like it better than Oo.
Um, but I don't like it better than Billionaire. Billionaire is just such a cool song.
All right, what do we got next?
Smart by Lucerapim. Let's check it out.
Okay, got to admit I don't think I've ever seen this video. I think I have heard the song. Pretty sure I have heard the song. And it would appear that Yunjin is a secretary.
Or is that being judgmental of me? Let's see.
Wild Nails.
[music] >> [music] [music] >> Oh, wait a minute.
[music] Okay. B flat minor, folks.
>> I knew I had the tingling in the back of my neck. [music] I like the kind of montuma that's going on with the [music] drums.
[music] >> [music] >> me see [music] victory baby.
[music] [music] >> Who is that? Is that Is that MJ? Wow.
Um, let me just go over the chords real quick because it doesn't sound like anything's going to change. Uh, I guess if you were in B flat minor, this would be a G flat uh to B flat minor and then down to A flat.
And those are the only three chords that we have in it right now. Um, Jayon is a blonde. That's crazy.
>> [singing and music] >> Yeah, that's Wow, [music] there's Zua.
[music] >> Oh no, there's Zua. Never mind. My bad.
[music] >> [music] [singing] >> All right.
>> The vocal performances are very nice.
They're very clean.
[music] [music] >> That's Sakura.
>> Wow.
>> Oh, no. There's Sakura. So that was Yunjin.
>> No, [music] had to be >> I'm getting a me. This is the band I know. And I'm getting a members mix up.
[music] >> Oh, I like how they're delivering their lines and moving across.
[music] That's cor.
Wow.
>> [music] [music] >> I'm a newbie, soon to be a butterfly.
That's ridiculously well [cheering] performed.
Yeah, throw throw your trash away.
Better yet, recycle it.
Oh, Crazy. Yeah, I know the song Crazy.
Uh, there's a really lovely version of Easy, Crazy, and Hot and it's a kind of a collaboration between Lerapim and Beat Pella House. If you haven't seen that, check it out. It's pretty It's pretty amazing. The folks at at Beat Pella House just blow my mind. Um, and it's a really beautiful arrangement, and it's not what you would expect coming from Easy, especially. Um, Crazy's pretty close.
And then Hot's uh, a little different, but it it's it's just fabulous. It's a fabulous collaboration.
Anyway, uh, I like the lightness of the production in this. um in some places. That way it allowed for when they did add stuff to make it make those three chords um sound better in some ways. Um, however, the melody is very predictable and you know me, I'm a chord snob. And I know this is a me problem. This is this isn't a problem with the song. This is a me problem, but since it's my list, I got to let my me problems happen sometimes.
Uh, so, uh, I certainly don't think it's going to come anywhere close to my favorite Beraphim song. Let's see where it ranks in this list so far.
Okay, I've already kind of stated my reasons uh for not liking this small song as much as uh some other Lerapim songs. And what I'm finding is that I'm at the bottom of the list trying to work my way up and I'm already pausing at Gingga Minga Yo.
And I don't think that I can put this above that. I think gingo ming yo as much as the EQ drives me crazy on the vocals on that one. Um, this one was starting to just kind of lull me out. And it's not a skip. None of these are skips, don't get me wrong.
If it came on a playlist, it would still be played.
Uh, but it wouldn't be a song that I would seek out to play. It's not a song that I would probably put on a playlist.
So that's where Lareraphim goes this time around. What are we doing next?
Assign Tilda anonymous.
Okay, if I do remember correctly, hang on to your hats cuz you're about to get assaulted with a whole lot of cords which will delight me, but I don't know how you'll feel about it. Here we go.
Sua, Suian, Haram, Suki, Shian, Seun, and Haruna.
Let's go.
[music] Those clusters are so good.
[music] >> Oh, I've got captions on. I need to take them off.
>> [music] >> Okay. So, that's the center of the key.
[music] >> Oh, back to this part. Okay. [music] [music] Hang on.
That's almost too many chords for me.
The one thing I want to do is check these clusters because they're the hardest thing to figure out.
When a bass moves, then you can kind of tell what the quality of the chord is.
But when one notes just stay static on top.
Yeah.
Yeah. Close to it anyway.
No.
And then the logic would say here.
Yeah.
Wow. So it's like a G major 9 to a G9 or a D minor 11 over F. Either way, it's it it's over F.
And then the la the so the the lowest note just keeps moving down chromatically from an F sharp to an F to an E and then to an E flat and which makes an E flat major 7. That is crazy.
Okay, I'm not going to I'm not going to blow through all those chords. There's no way that I'll be able to transcribe all of this. Uh, so let's just sit back and enjoy the tune and uh I'll put them over my head. I'll work tirelessly for an hour probably to transcribe this thing uh and put it over my head. Here we go.
[music] [music] Oh, the chord qualities are so good.
[music] The melody's really simple, but okay, this is something. Sometimes they're going to be minor.
Sometimes they're going to B major.
Uh, this seems to be a Billy thing where they they switch minors and majors a lot, which makes my job harder, but man, does it make my ears happy.
[music] >> That's major.
[music] >> That was was minor.
>> [music] >> Go.
[music] [music] I love this part.
>> [music] >> So young [music] is so good.
[music] >> Oh.
>> [music] >> the major one.
>> Back to the flat 6 to [music] C.
[singing] >> Hang on. I got to check something there.
So, were those minor chords?
Nope. Were they triads this way?
Man, these guys are crazy.
It's almost too many chords.
And you're hearing that from a chord snob. Wow. It's such a good song, though.
[music] Those chords shouldn't work, but because of the way the melody is and the way it is, [music] >> oh my goodness.
[music] >> [music] >> Thank you for I mean sorting out seven voices that's pretty hard and I don't know how accurate that was but oh my goodness that song it's almost overwhelming. It's so good.
But it's almost to that point where it even overwhelms me a little bit that there's things in this like just little transition chords that are happening. You just It can't just be C# minor to F# 7 uh to B minor. No, we got to do these crazy or minor 7 flat 5 chords and transitional chords that don't even exist in that particular key.
Makes me like it more. This is going to be fun transcribing this later. Um, but the chords change so fast. I may have uh I may be cursing them when I put the uh when I edit the video and put the chords in. We'll see. But let's rank it for now.
Oh boy.
I still can't put it above dash. I know that. The question becomes, does it go above or below Billy? Uh ring by ring, pardon me. They're both Billy.
And I'm just toggling back and forth here trying to figure out.
Man, this song's so well put together.
And it's really funky. That bass is almost too splatty for me.
No, I'm going to go above ring by ring.
My goodness. Billy has three of the top five.
Okay.
That's crazy.
Fear knots and and monsties and um ants are hating me right now.
Especially fear not by the way. I rank smart.
Uh like that baby monster. I think this one's a performance MB as well. I couldn't find anything except a music bank stage for the Billy song and I know I can't get away with those uh without somebody getting mad. So, I had to go for the lyric video. But let's check out uh Like That by Baby Monster.
And here we go.
Exclusive live performance video.
I look uprace [music] you got stand to all those girls but I know I Baby, [music] baby, baby.
Know what that means?
I know where it's at. Baby, [music] baby.
>> All right, I fear you all times. I be thinking way too much. I need you to [music] let it go. You be running through my mind. I'mma let it show.
>> Nobody stepping up to me. When I calling you out, I would never [music] [music] roll.
>> I love how different Ruka and Assa's flows are. They're they're they're completely different. They sit in the pocket or they create their own pocket that sits completely differently all within the same time frame, but they both work. They're very individual and I I love that. Um, what are the chords here? Yeah, B minor. Uh, because I could tell it was the same key as a Billy tune. Uh, and then I guess an E minor and an F sharp minor. It's only got three chords so far as well. Uh, but for some reason this song's sitting better in my ears than Smart did.
on and on and on and on and to the top.
Every boy will be rolling cuz all those girls. [music] >> I didn't know Kea could sing that high.
[music] know where it's like baby boy >> pretty much know aon >> when I see her but I don't know how to pronounce her name [music] All right, FA.
>> I love the phrasing of that. Baby, would you like that? If I get [singing] you right back, baby.
[music] >> He just got such a [music] >> attitude, man. It's so cool.
>> Terrified of her, too. [music] >> All right.
I know at least feel better than [music] your dreams if I show you that I know where it's at. Baby, would you like that? Baby, would you like that?
Okay. What was the significance of one of them coming in and sitting down? Is that because they'd been on a hiatus or something?
Uh, I'd like to know that. I'm sure that monsties will let me know in the comments. Also, uh, let me know how many times I screwed up names this time, cuz I do screw up names still. U, but goodness gracious, the vocals on that one are incredible.
They're all all four of these groups. I I think with Lerapim, I find myself more drawn to watching their videos than actually hearing them sing. But I think that Zua sings fantastically. I think that Chwan sings fantastically. I think that Eugene sings fantastically. I don't mind Sakura's voice. Uh, and Sakura's just like a superstar. I mean, she just got the thing. And then, uh, and Uned fine on this one, too.
Uh, but this one, this Baby Monster song again, only three chords, but it sits so much better for me. Farita's little her phrasing of that da da da da da da da. I love phrases like that, too, because what they do is they feel like they're pushing the beat, even though time's still being here, but 2 3 4 da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da. It's groups of three. It's It's emphasizing groups of three in a meter that is set up for four. And that's what gives it all that forward energy.
And those were all all of the members who had that line did fantastically with it. And I still can't I think what I'm actually most impressed with is how different Ruka and Assa's pockets are and yet how they both work and how they kind of both complement each other.
It's It's really cool. I love it when they do backtoback stuff.
It it's it's like the EV it's like um I don't know it makes it grow instead of just two different people doing flows.
It feels like a a flow that sets the groundwork really well and enough so that the other flow can can walk on top of it. Um and I'm sure that no matter which order they went in, either of them could do it like that.
But, uh, man, they really work well together.
At least on record, they do. Let's rank this thing.
All right. I know you're going to call me a hypocrite because the Saraphim song only had three chords in it and I put it at the bottom. But I'm not putting the Baby Monster song at the bottom. In fact, I'm going way up. I can tell already. It's a question really. It's right around the Run for the Roses mark. For me, it's whether it's better than that or not. I think I still like Billionaire better, but uh just because I love I loved that Montuma that was going on in that one.
This one was just more kind of a straight beat with a lot of cool whistle stuff in it.
Plus, Billionaire had more chords. But do I like Run for the Roses better or do I like like That better.
[sighs] Baby Monster is getting all clustered up here, but I'm going to put it above Run for the Roses for me.
And remember, this is just my list. You You all You all know this. you you can say in your own brains or even in the comments below how terrible I am at at this ranking stuff. Uh but this is just my own personal taste. And if you want to share your own personal taste out of the songs that we've done so far, 16 songs now. I'll scroll through the list here real quick.
Please tell me how you would rank these songs. Feel free to pause that if you need to. Uh but Billy wins this week. Uh then it'll be Baby Monster, Inmix, and then Larerapim. That's the order we'll go in next time around. Uh how did you feel also, you know, and don't be afraid to say it's crap, but how did you feel about me doing the wheel to pick songs out of suggestions that you'd already made and please keep adding suggestions?
I'd love to add them to that list and maybe do at least one more episode of The Wheel, but if you all say, then I won't do it anymore. So, uh, I I'll I'll adhere to the majority on on this one.
Whatever I hear the most about, whether keep Yeah, keep it or or, uh, no, strike it. Uh, either way will work for me. And if you like this video, please leave it a like. Uh, if you want to subscribe to the channel, nobody around here is going to shun you for that. I do have extra leraphim and even a little bit of extra inmix content. Uh, and definitely some extra Baby Monster content on my Patreon if you want to check that out. I don't have a whole lot for Billy. I need to fix that. I don't know how much content is there for them. Oh, yeah. Some uh uh a commenter said something about what part of their storytelling is, and that is that Billy is a missing member. And so at at the beginning whenever they do a new release, a comeback, they're always looking for their their missing member. That's who Billy is. I love that. That's cool. Um I'm not I'm not a lore guy, but that that was a fun that was a fun learn for me. So, thank you for filling me in on that. and whatever else you feel like I'm missing about these groups, including, you know, whether I've got the names right of the folks or even if I have the right name, whether I'm pronouncing that name correct. Uh, it I'm an old man. It takes me a long time to learn these things.
Uh, and Baby Monster is brand new. Inmix I've been aware of and and have kind of learned their names, I think. Uh, Larapim was the one I had the most trouble with this week. [laughter] And, uh, that's funny cuz I I've known who they are. the longest. And uh Billy, I'm still pretty clueless except for Haram. Uh I recognize Suki and um I recognize Msua uh for sure. Uh but the rest of them kind of get blurry on me.
So help me out with that. Uh I should learn them more since they're they're scoring so high. Two and three. They've got three of the top five. Anyway, I'm babbling. I'm babbling. I'm babbling.
You've probably already turned off, but if you haven't, thanks so much for watching. Take care.
