LIVE: Build Your Own Sprinter AI Assistant + 2024 Upfitter Days Breakdown2.Added:
All Hey, what's up guys? Welcome to Sprinter Doctor live.
If you're joining me live, we're about to go over just some slides on the 2024 upfitter days. I got some good information in there about upfitting your Sprinter and also I'm going to teach you show you how to use AI to help you find any information that you want to find about your sprinter. And also it's just going to be, you know, ask me any questions that you want to ask to that way I can help you, you know, with your sprinter questions. Um, so just grab you a cup of coffee, get comfortable, and we'll see how this goes.
I'm I'm not a professional podcaster, so I'm still learning how to do this. So, I apologize if you're catching this.
And while I'm still trying to learn how to do all this All right, let's take a look at the 2024 upfitter days.
You can find this yourself if you want to go to www.upfitter hubfitterportal.com.
Now, we're going to click on technical info, technical bulletins.
going to go down to Sprinter Mercedes-Benz upfitter days and we're just going to open this file.
Hope everybody's doing good this fine Sunday.
Let's open this up.
Okay.
Van features at a glance.
Business to customer highlights.
This is just some features that they have. Remote lock and unlock. Vehicle locator, vehicle status. That's for the Mercedes MI connect companion app. Then you've got the businessto business that's just more for fleets. Um you got fleet monitoring, remote software updates, accident and breakdown management. Got maintenance management, cabin preconditioning and charging management for the e printer.
All right, business to customer RV and personal. You can check the lock status and lock the vehicle if you want to.
It's great for RV customers who can easily unlock the vehicle if the keys are left in the RV portion of the vehicle. You've got a vehicle locator where you can see your vehicle on a map through the app. That's good for big parking lots or RV parks. You can easily find your vehicle. You got vehicle status. You can view the latest data from your van, including the mileage, fuel level, tire pressures, battery voltage, maintenance management, and remote diagnosis or tea diagnosis. You get reminders of upcoming services and vehicle issues.
Call a local dealer to book a service appointment.
small business and fleet. You can locate fleet vehicles and ensure they are locked and secured remotely. It's good for business owners who want to protect their assets.
Remote software updates. You can get the latest software installed over the air so your van is optimized with the most current information from Mercedes-Benz.
And that's going to be the inbox or the infotainment that you get those overtheair updates for.
Um that reduces downtime and dealer visits.
You've got accident and breakdown management. In the event of an accident, your vehicle's data and position will be relayed to roadside assistance for immediate assistance, which in the Birmingham area, I'll be your roadside assistance guy because I do the roadside assistance. Myself and Dennis Timmons, he's our other roadside a uh technician that works at Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham with us.
So, you got maintenance management where you get reminders of upcoming services.
Improved efficiency to be able to see maintenance needs in real time and prevent vehicle downtime.
You've got cabin preconditioning and charging management on your ESRE.
This is just showing the companion app, the Mercedes MI app, you know, what it's going to look like on your phone.
Um, got the Mercedes MI Connect store.
What are digital extras? Mercedes MI Connect offers customers a variety of digital extras to ensure they have the most luxurious and convenient experience. Some features included are vehicle software updates, live traffic information, remote access to the vehicle, vehicle monitoring, digital extras are always continually improving and new features are being developed.
uh van features at a glance. Power tapping.
There's several ways you can get power for things that you want to upfit and add to your van. You got fuel tapping, suspension modification and body lifts, front and rear bumper modification, MPM/PSM and E5M extension harness. You got J1B, which is the blind spot assist prep for the cab chassis. So that's where you can order the cab chassis with blind spot assist preparation where RV builders can have a class C motor home that they're building and they can have the blind spot assist if they would like to, which would be great to have because I love blind spot assist. Um, you can, of course, you got the options for the backup camera and the digital rearview mirror and the H88 auxiliary heating and cooling prep. So, if you're adding on a 23 model and up, if you're adding any kind of like a rear heating system that you're going to tap into the uh coolant system, you need you have to order your van with option code H88 because it's not allowed to tie into that uh heating system in any other way because that can cause cause your vehicle to run hot can cause hot spots, cause, you know, all kinds of problems.
All right. So, power tapping is not allowed to connect directly to the battery according to Mercedes.
Don't don't do that because you can cause you know battery drain issues, canvas failures and problems in the instrument cluster and diagnostic dealer diagnostic issues.
So power tapping a little bit more. If you look under the driver's seat in the seat box, you've got a prefuse box that you can get power from. There's an open slot here for 100 amp fuse that you can tap power from. There's an open slot here, max 250 amps.
And this is just showing some of the different power that's coming off this prefuse.
You've got this is your E36 cut off relay that's under the driver's seat there. You've got EK1 the upfitter connector. You can get 12 volts all the time. You can get circuit 15, which is only getting power with the key on. Then you've also got 12 volts only with the engine running. So you got those three options that you can get power from right here on this EK1 upfitter connector.
All right, a little bit more about power tapping. This this little connector here, EK1, the upfitter connector.
That's what this page right here is showing. Terminal one, it's a 12vt with the engine running 10 amp max.
That's terminal one. Terminal two is going to be 12 volts, 25 amps. And that's circuit 30, which is hot all the time. 12 volts all the time. And that's 25 amp max. Then you got terminal three.
That's circuit 15. So, that's only going to have power when the key is on. And here's a side view of that connector with the top opened up. And that's your terminal one, two, and three.
All right.
So, that's one place to get power.
All right. This is just telling about E36.
It's designed to transfer a maximum of 80 amps. E36 is going to be, you know, an auxiliary battery. Another, you know, you got your chassis battery right here.
And then you got, you can have an auxiliary battery, auxiliary 12volt battery, full size battery. And your E36 relay is for that auxiliary battery.
Now, right here it says E36 is not retrofittable, but they're working on a system to retrofit that.
So, just some points right here. You cannot exceed 80 amps on that getting power from that source.
E36 is designed to transfer a maximum of 80 amps and 80 amps in total must be insured by the upfitter.
Upfitter installed electrical consumer plus Mercedes-Benz factory consumers must be less than 80 amps. If the total amperage all might exceed 80 amps, a current limitation system with a maximum of 80 amps must be installed.
All right. Power tapping. If if the amp draw might exceed 80 amps, this is just showing you need to put a current limiter in line with E36 because you cannot go over 80 amps on that.
Idling is not recommended because that can damage your diesel particulate filter. So if you need to charge your auxiliary batteries, you always need to drive your Sprinter.
All right, for the very few people out there that have an ES Sprinter, there's some important points on your ES Sprinter. You need to have a current limiter for four to 40 amps because of the risk for voltage flu fluctuation.
And on all ES printer models, the risk for voltage fluctuation is very high if the current limitation system is adjusted to more than 40 amps. If you install additional auxiliary batteries on e- printer models, you must install a current limitation system with a maximum of 40 amps and also ensure that you test the system to ensure there's no voltage oscillation and fluctuation.
All right. Power tapping any amperage and more than 90 amp hours separate upfitter solution.
And this is just going over you know only Mercedes genuine parts must be used for the N62 assembly. N62 is going to be a secondary alternator.
And it's just going over some key points about adding an additional alternator.
says only alternators with a freewheel or a one-way clutch on the alternator pulley are permitted and the outside diameter of the pulley needs to be 50 mm or 1.97 in.
And also you cannot get power from the engine below 1200 RPM. So, if you install a secondary alternator, it's not supposed to be pull dragging on the engine at all below 1,200 RPMs. That's why Tiffen came out with a recall on their secondary alternator because when you try to charge your house batteries with a secondary alternator below 1200 RPMs, it can throw codes for torque converter lockup clutch won't disengage. And it just can also give fault codes for the idle speed because the engine control unit is seeing that it takes a lot more injection duration to maintain idle speed than it should. So that puts the vehicle in limp mode. So it's very important not to try to use that secondary alternator to charge your house batteries below 1200 RPMs because it'll give you limp mode and it's not good.
Do not install an alternator assembly with a weight higher than 16.1 lbs. I'm not sure exactly what that can cause. If the weight of the alternator is heavier than 16 pounds, I'm not I'm not sure what that exactly does, but I'm sure it has something to do with the engine speed. Um, and the crankshaft position sensor u can also pick up the engine rotation to a very fine degree. So, it's probably got something to do with that. Um, optimum belt alignment and belt tension must be ensured by positioning the center line and the pulley of the auxiliary alternator correctly.
Mercedes provides a 3D model of the N62 assembly and includes an example alternator for expert hub fitters on the hub fitter portal.
This is just saying no idling. You know, if you keep idling, that will damage your diesel particular filter. So, do not idle your diesel engine for a long period of time because it's going to cost you time down and money to have that diesel particulate filter repaired or replaced.
Fuel tapping your auxiliary diesel heater connected to KL1.
There's your auxiliary fuel tab right here.
If you're going to connect a fuel fired heater, you need to add code J52 and code the system.
That will because when you have the engine off and the key off, if you're fuel fired heater is taking fuel out of the tank, when you crank the vehicle back up, it'll display the wrong fuel level because It uses a calculated fuel level.
It doesn't read directly off the sensor.
And so adding this J52 code will make the system read directly off the fuel gauge off the fuel float rather.
All right. This is just showing some suspension modification and body lift varants.
You've got CB1 suspension for comfort and load protection.
Got CB7 stabilization level one, CB8 stabilization level two, CB4 stabilization level three, and so on and so forth. There's a lot of different options for different levels of stabilization.
All right.
on your front bumper and rear bumper modification. I see a lot of upfitters painting the bumpers with metallic silver especially will cause problems with your distronic radar sensor. Your distronic radar sensor is right here in the center of this opening right behind this little square cover in the on the front bumper.
That's where your radar sensor is.
And so if you have metallic silver paint or any other paint, if the paint's too thick, it will cause problems with your your active distance assist, your cruise control.
All right. And on the rear bumpers, if you have paint on the sides of the rear bumpers, this is your blind spot assist sensors. If there is paint over the bumper on the rear, that will cause problems with your blind spot assist.
I've seen it give false readings for somebody being in the blind spot when there's nothing there when there's metallic silver paint here over these radar sensors.
All right, PSM.
Your PSM module lives under the driver's seat in this little seat box right here.
Option code E5M is a little extension harness that comes off this and your PSM.
A lot of the RV manufacturers use the PSM to do several different things like running additional tail lights, brake lights, running lights. They use it to get a 12volt signal when you got the parking brake on and the key on and the engine off. You know, just different things like that. The PSM can be used for all sorts of things. So, if you have a van that you're want to build out, you probably want to order it with a PSM because you can get different PSM programs and you can download the PSM program into your um PSM and have it do different a lot of different functions. So, that's good to know. Here's the cab chassis prep for blind spot assist sensor installation. So if you are a upfitter now you can add the blind spot assist. And this is just showing the measurements and where the sensors need to go.
Permissible tolerance of the alignment of the radar sensor in all directions.
Maximum plus or minus one degree.
FR3, FR7 and F84 SL F85 analog and digital rearview mirror camera installation.
It's just showing all your different option codes for your reversing cameras.
And if you are building a C-class motor home, you do need to know all of these measurements and they have to be input into the computer to tell the vehicle where that camera is. You have to measure all sorts of angles and so upfitters need to know that.
All right, here's the H880.
If you're buying a van and you're going to be building it out to like a, you know, you're doing your own build on it and you're going to be tying in to the coolant system, you need to order your van with option code H88.
Because if you don't and you try to tap into the heater hose, if you have any problems down the road, you're going to get denied warranty if you tapped into that and you have some kind of engine damage because they're attributing that to engine damage.
This is just showing there's a no drilling solution for shelf mounting.
These are the guys that were over the upfitter days putting this information together.
Here's some model model year 25 product updates. You got just some bullet points here. I'm looking for anything new.
Active distance assist. That's not new.
Reversing camera with interior mirror display.
Digital rearview mirror, crosswind assist, that's been around, side guard assist, side guard assist is new. There is a radar sensor behind the front bumper on the right front and that is for pedestrians and that will warn you about pedestrians being in your vicinity.
The rest of these things all look like existing products that have been on this printer. Um, moving off information system.
This is showing about the pedestrian sensor.
Monitors the area directly in front of the vehicle and next to it.
the sprint next to the sprinter up to speeds of six miles an hour.
Includes a front camera as well as six ultrasonic sensors and automatically active once the vehicle has been started. So, it's just going to be monitoring the area in front of the vehicle to try to keep track of whether there's, you know, pedestrians in front of your vehicle and it'll give you a warning in the dash if it sees a person in front of your vehicle.
If road user is detected in the monitored area, driver is first informed by a visual information signal. Yeah, this gives you a message on the dash.
I've seen it.
If it's an imminent collision, an acoustic and visual warning is generated and that system can be deactivated inbox.
And this is showing your side guard assist.
warns the driver when there's a road user in the defined area or in the red zone on the passenger side here.
If an object enters the blue zone, LED and exterior mirror illuminates. It's the same as the blind spot assist.
If an object enters the red zone and the turn signal is turned on, the LED flashes and you're warned by an acoustic sound and a visual display. So, it's just going to warn you if there's somebody over here in your, you know, bicycle lane and you're getting ready to turn.
It's a passive system, so it's not going to have any kind of autonomous braking.
Again, that can be deactivated through the instrument cluster or through inbox.
Child detection in the vehicle. Option code SK6.
There's a warning system to remind drivers of people and animals in the rear.
Standard on crew and passenger vans.
There's a warning if the rear door or the sliding door is open plus a journey of 3 minutes.
Rear door or sliding door open for more than 12 seconds plus vehicle stationary plus ignition on for more than 3 minutes.
No warning if ignition off at journey end and rear doors open for more than two seconds or the vehicle is locked.
All right.
Active brake assist.
Enhanced brake accuracy. Avoiding collisions with stationary vehicles in front.
Speeds less than or equal to 50 mph.
That was previously 37 miles per hour.
Another new feature that supports braking process and vertical crossing and turning.
Supports braking process with opposing lane vehicles speeds less than 44 miles an hour.
All right. Active lane keeping assist.
initiate targeted lane correcting interventions via ESP.
Does not break back into lane, but steers it by selectively breaking individual wheels.
Enhanced detection accuracy for road edges, lines, grass, curb, accessory, etc. Visual and acoustic warning coupled with steering wheel vibrations.
All right. New for 25. You got 3D surround view with 360 camera.
You can see on your inbox display, you got that 3D surround view. It expands the existing parking package with 360 camera functionality to better assess your surroundings.
Images shown in the head unit can be rotated and scrolled.
Parkronic integrated into image shown by blue fence. You can see the little blue fence around the vehicle there in the on the display. And that operates at speeds up to 6 miles per hour.
All right. Another model year 25 highlight is on your sliding door.
You've got an additional latch on your sliding door. There's another latch on the front and that's an option.
So you got the additional striker on the B-pillar by the sliding door mated with additional latch under the sliding door handle.
Latch opens automatically when the doors open and a standard on passenger and crew vans and an option on cargo vans.
All right, some key geometrical changes.
You've got the you used to have the multi-function camera up on the top of the windshield. Now it's down at the bottom. And I think that has to do with the pedestrian the pedestrian system where it's watching for people in front of the man.
All right. Aridium silver is going to be phased out. Now you're going to have high-tech silver.
All right. Product highlight. Cab chassis 3500 XT 4500.
Got 144 inch or 170 inch wheelbase.
That's the same as it's been 11,30 lb GVWR.
And then for the 4500 12,125 GVWR up to 7,56 lbs of payload, 15,250 lbs of gross combined weight rating.
All-wheel drive version available with increased ground clearance.
Cab chassis 3500 to 4500 cab customization.
You can delete the rear wall if you're an upfitter and you don't want that rear wall. And you can get the roof deleted and the rear wall deleted if you're an upfitter.
Here's some dimensional considerations.
I I don't think anybody is going to be really interested in that.
All right. Espinter overview. Got 113 kilowatt hour battery, 488 cubic feet of storage, you know, compartment space in the back, 206 milei range, it looks like.
Got two battery options. Looks like a 81 kWh battery and or 113 kWh battery.
Here's your charging components.
DC contact box under the hood where the engine used to be. AC onboard charger right here. Got all these high voltage cables. They're all orange.
If you've never driven an electric printer, it's really strange.
Here's your high voltage battery.
lithium iron phosphate.
There's your rear axle motor. This thing's got fiberglass lace frames.
Electric motor. There's two variants available, 100 and 150 kilowatt.
Here's some additional electric components. electric vacuum pump, sound generator, front and rear. That way you can people can hear you coming.
I don't think most people are really that interested in the electric sprinters, but that's just kind of me.
This is just showing your driving programs.
Regenerative braking.
I don't think anybody's really interested in that.
Sprinter assistance systems, active brake assist, attention assist, crosswind assist, MIS, that's your pedestrian detection, next generation inbox, backup camera, digital rearview mirror.
Basically, everything's the same.
Uh, for 2025, there's commissioning process now the upfitters have to do.
I don't think anybody that's watching my live is going to be interested in a commissioning process, but basically on these new 25 models, when an upfitter builds the motor home, they have to have all the measurements for the dimensions of the house part on the back. And you have to enter all of those dimensions in. You have to enter all those codes and basically commission the vehicle so all of the assistance systems work properly. Takes about two hours to do. So just helps everything work better.
Here's your PSM.
That's the old one. Here's the new one.
A lot more functionality.
All right, that's it for the Upfitter Dave slides.
All right, something else that I wanted to go over with you guys is how to use AI to find information for your Sprinter. I like to use it.
It's very helpful for me because I'm a technician, but it it could help you as well if you're an owner. So, what you can do is you can go to the upfitter portal.
Let's say I have a 2020 Sprinter.
I'm going to go to Let's see if I can find it.
You're going to have to bear with me for a minute.
Technical info.
See if I can remember.
I think I probably could have been a little better prepared for this, but I think I can find my way.
Basically, you want to go and get the owner's manual, the PDF version of your vehicle.
Owner's manual.
Let's go here. Technical info.
body and equipment guidelines. This is the body and equipment guidelines that Mercedes sets out. That's all the rules for upfitting and connecting different things to your van. So if you have a 2023 can go body and equipment guidelines right here addition 2024.
This is the one that I would want to do.
But if you have a 2023, doesn't look like there's a 2023, but this is dated for 2023, but it says edition 2022. So, I would go buy this one. Let's download that.
All right. I'm going to open the file.
body and equipment guidelines. Okay.
All right.
There's that.
Now, we're going to go and find Let's go back home.
technical info.
There's a path in here to go find your owner's manuals. And I found it Friday because I wanted to be prepared, but I'm not prepared.
Here we go. Let's try this digital extras.
All right, here we are. Click on owners.
Owner's manuals.
Let's say we've got a 2023 model.
We're going to go here and we're going to go model 23, owner's manual, operator's manual.
We're going to open this file location.
I'm going to rename that 2023 owner's manual.
All right. Now, you can use chat dpt or gro. I don't know if anybody uses AI, but it's pretty helpful. So, if you're if you're using chat GPT, what you want to do is come over here to GPTs.
All right. Click on explore GPTs.
GPT stands for generative um pre-trained model. All right. You want to come over here and click create. All right, click on configure.
All right, and this is where you're going to download your knowledge base to your to your GPT.
So, we're going to upload files to our knowledge.
We're going to put our orange manual.
We're going to put our body equipment guidelines.
Okay, it's still downloading the body and equipment guidelines.
We'll give it just a minute.
Okay. Now, you're going to name your GPT.
You can just name it uh my sprinter assistant.
And I'm just going to put this is GPT is for giving me information about my spring.
All right.
This is the instructions. This is where you tell the GPT what you want it to do.
And you can put as much information as you want to here. What I'm just going to do is tell it to when I ask you a question.
I want you to answer first.
Wait a minute. Let's go to use your knowledge base.
for any information before using the internet to find information.
All right.
See whatever else you want to tell it.
You can say, um, you know, I want you to give me page numbers and or chapter and section.
for where you find this information.
So I can reference the information to verify just any kind of any kind of instructions you want to give the AI you can give it to it here.
All right. Now you can just hit create.
You can share it with anybody if you want to or you can just use it for only you. I'm going to set this one to only me.
All right. I'm going click view GPT.
Now, what chat GPT is going to do is you can ask questions about your sprinter and it will use the body equipment guidelines and your owner's manual to find the information to answer the question that you're asking. So, that's a great way to find information fast about your sprinter.
And you can use you can download warranty manuals, you know. Um, something else that you could do, you could download like if you have a aftermarket warranty, you know, and they have these big, you know, lists of information on what they cover, what they don't cover. You could download that into the knowledge base on your GPT and you can ask questions about whether or not something might be covered under warranty from an aftermarket warranty or things like that.
All right. So, yep, here we are.
Let's ask the question.
H um can you tell me what I need to know about adding a secondary alternator to my SR?
gives you all sorts of information.
And here it's just doing what I told it to do. has given me chapters and sections for where to find that information in the body and equipment guidelines.
You can do the same thing on Grock.
All right. If you open up grock, you can go to let's go to project new project name sprint system.
All right.
And here's some instructions. You can give instructions to when I ask you questions about my sprinter van.
I want you to use the knowledge base files.
Let me put this PDF documents for the buy and equipment and farmers manual first before using the internet.
This is where we're going to drop our files.
Upload. Going to put our owner's manual.
Upload a file.
Body and equipment guidelines. And you can do this. You can make a GPT or an AI assistant for basically anything. And you just download the knowledge. Tell it what you want it to do. And these things make great assistance.
So here we go. We're just going to hit create.
All right. If anybody's asking questions, I can't see a chat window right here. So, I'm not sure if I'm missing.
>> I'm just trying to go over everything that I was wanting to go over with you guys. And so, I'm just going to have to try to find my chat window.
So, here's our sprinter assistant.
>> Okay. Um, I am building a van for camping.
Let's see.
What information can you give me about connecting and all auxiliary rear heater and this will give you all sorts of information out of the body of equipment guidelines about your question and it gives you also information out of the owner's manual.
All right, so this is just some cool ways that you can use AI to help you make an assistant for yourself.
And so very helpful for me >> because I'm answering a lot of questions on a daily basis and so it's hard to read through the body equipment guidelines is huge. It's got a lot of information. So just this helps me find the information that I need so that I can go to that section and read for myself >> to verify because AI systems do hallucinate. So they will give you an answer sometimes that sounds totally plausible and truthful. But if you go and try, you need to go verify it by at least two sources because AI hallucinating will give you false information that sounds like good information.
>> So just remember that AI.
All right, let's see if I can find I don't know where my chat window went, but I don't even know if this live stream worked or not.
I'm kind of new to the live stream stuff.
Being a mechanic, I'm not really that great at podcasting yet. I'm trying to learn that, right, guys? Well, Anybody there?
