Demolished 100-Year Old Baseball Stadium - Majors Stadium - Greenville, TX

[00:00:00]Hall of Famer Joe Deaggio and the New York Yankees played an exhibition game in 1949 right here at Major Stadium in Greenville, Texas, which is east of Dallas. The field's no longer here, but the arched entryway to the stadium remains. The field goes back to 1929 when local resident Ula Phillips donated $3,500 so the town could build an athletic field in memory of her husband.

[00:00:19]And it opened with the name Phillips Field. It was used primarily by the Greenville High School football team, and this was their home stadium when they won the state championship in 1933.

[00:00:27]After World War II, the field was upgraded to host minor league baseball, and a team called the Greenville Majors started playing here. In 1947, they built a steel and concrete grandstand that seated over 3,500 people, making it one of the more modern parks in the region. And in the 40s, the Greenville Majors would draw over 150,000 fans here in a season. And that led to the most famous game played here in 1949, an exhibition game between the Greenville Majors and the New York Yankees. Casey Stangle managed the Yankees and Joe Deaggio played center field. and the Greenville Majors actually ended up winning that exhibition game 4 to3. But attendance declined in the 50s and a few different teams used the field before the property was eventually sold in 1964 and the field was demolished. In its place now is an assortment of industrial equipment and storage. I know there's a building or two that was part of the stadium facility that's still standing.
