Indian Railways has deployed twin WAP7 electric locomotives (12,200 HP combined) in Multiple Unit (MU) configuration for testing on the newly electrified Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat section, which features challenging 1:50 gradient and Western Ghat terrain; this rare sight demonstrates how electric locomotives can be coupled to provide backup capability during testing and inspection operations, with the front locomotive designated as master and the rear as slave, allowing a single loco pilot to control both units from one cabin.

RARESTโBoth WAP7's Working Together 12000 HP๐ฒโ| Trains | Indian Railways #wap7 #trainvideos #trainAdded:
WAP 7 MU Hi Rail Zone viewers, today I'm at the Yesvantpur Railway Station and here comes the WAP 7 MU. So, if you're wondering what is MU, MU stands for multiple units. So, this is probably the first time I'm witnessing two WAP 7s coupled together and working together. Usually, we would have seen a dead WAP 7 and another WAP 7 coupled to the dead WAP 7 during loco failures, but that is not the case here. So, here both the WAP 7s are working together. So, usually a single WAP 7 produces a power output of 6,100 horsepowers. So, that is more than sufficient to pull any express train of 24 ICF coaches or 24 LHB coaches.
So, here comes the WAP 7 twins getting coupled to the Yesvantpur-Salem Express.
And this train has around 19 coaches.
So, this is the MU port. You can see the MU cable which is interconnecting both the locomotives together. So, this allows the locomotives to operate in sync from a single cabin. That is, a loco pilot can control both the locomotives from a single cabin. So, there is no need of two different loco pilots to operate separately.
So, here you can note the pantographs of both the locos are turning down at the same time and both the pantographs are switching up at So, just like how the freight locomotives, the goods locomotives are coupled together and there's only one loco pilot crew working. In the same way, one loco pilot can control both the WAP 7 locomotives with the help of the MU cables.
So, in in [snorts] multiple units, the front loco is called as the master locomotive and the rear locomotive is called the slave locomotive.
And both the locomotives in combined will produce a power output of 12,200 horsepowers.
So, you must be wondering why did they couple both the locomotives. So, I'll let you know the reason in a while.
And if you watch my previous video, I'd already explained who this person is.
And here you can see that the dedicated cleaner, there is a dedicated loco cleaner in Bengaluru division who cleans the locomotives before the departure of any express train, who cleans the loco motors, especially the windshield, the wipers, the headlamps and ensures that is clear visibility for the loco pilots who will be driving the train.
And here you can see the the working crew is entering the train.
And here you can see the assistant loco pilot is checking the marker lights, the flasher light, also called the warning light, the headlight and ensuring um all these lights are working fine as it's extremely crucial for the working crew to ensure that all these lights are working, especially once it darkens.
So, I'll be taking a short journey on board the Yesvantpur-Salem Express behind the 12,200 12,200 horsepowers.
Behind the combined 12,200 horsepowers WAP 7 MU.
So, let's enjoy the short journey.
It's like a cakewalk for a WAP 7 to pull single-handedly any express train for that matter.
And one single WAP 7 is equal to two WDM 3A locomotives which were 3,100 horsepowers or a twin WDM 3D locomotive approximately.
So, that is the power of WAP 7 and that is the reason the WAP 7 is so popular among the Indian Railways and it is one of the most successful passenger class locomotive ever in the history of Indian Railways due to its high horsepower.
And presently, as of today, the WAP 7s are running at a max speed of 140 kmph and WAP 7s are also tested on high-speed tracks to run up to 180 kmph.
And if you remember during the COVID lockdown, WAP 7s were coupled together, twin WAP 7s were spotted hauling freight trains, goods trains. They were carrying COVID relief materials and high priority trains, high priority freight trains during the COVID lockdown. So, that was the last time I ever heard WAP 7s were coupled together.
But today, it's a different case altogether.
So, you must be still wondering why were the WAP 7s coupled together. So, before that, let's spot the WAP 7 twins which also hauled the 16239 Chikmagalur-Yesvantpur Express.
Spotted at Chik Banavar.
We are departing from Hebbal and on the right, you can see the doubling works are also going on at a fast pace. The doubling works between uh Channasandra, Byappanahalli cabin, then the Banaswadi and Chik Banavar via Yesvantpur bypass.
Well, these lines will be getting doubled soon.
So, finally, let me clarify why the WAP 7s were MU.
Like I explained earlier, there is no need for twin WAP 7s. However, recently the Bengaluru-Mangaluru section has been electrified. So, precisely, the ghat section, that is, after Hassan, between Sakleshpur and Subramanya Ghat. This section was recently electrified.
So, the Krishnarajapuram diesel loco shed coupled these locomotives for doing a test run in the Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat section.
So, basically, there is no need for a 12,200 horsepowers uh locomotive. However, in case of a loco failure, suppose when they are doing a testing with a WAP 7, while doing test runs with a WAP 7, uh if in case a locomotive if one locomotive fails, the other locomotive will serve as a backup without disrupting the trial runs or the inspection. So, that is the reason these twin WAP 7s were MU and sent for inspection. So, presently, there are still inspections going on in the Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat section, which is one of the most dangerous and challenging ghat sections in the Indian Railways due to the 1:50 ruling gradient, 55 tunnels and 200 critical viaducts and bridges which passes through the most challenging Western Ghat terrain. The Railways is planning to operate express trains in electric with electric locomotives. So, most likely, the locomotives which will be hauling the trains will be WAP 7s.
Therefore, it's not easy for the Railways to immediately switch to electric traction.
Once all the tests and inspections are completed and once the CRS inspection is completed, electric locos will be allowed to pass through the ghat section. I'll provide you more updates regarding this in the future videos.
So, these locomotives came back to Yesvantpur after the trial, after the testing and trial.
And they did not immediately detach the locomotives. Instead, they used it for a few days to run few express trains like the Chikmagalur Express and the Yesvantpur-Salem Express. So, I got a lucky chance to witness these twin locomotives and this is the reason behind these trains getting twin WAP 7s.
These locomotives will shortly be detached and in future, we need to wait and watch how the Railways are going to plan, whether they'll give twin WAP 7s for trains running on the ghat section options or they'll just use twin WAG 9s in the ghat section uh between Sakleshpur and Subramanya. So, we need to wait and watch as to when the electric locomotives will start operating with trains and goods in the Sakleshpur ghat section.
So, I'll get back to you with more details about the Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat section electrification.
And here departs the Yesvantpur-Salem Express from Banaswadi.
>> That's all from this video. I hope this video was informative and I hope you enjoyed watching this video.
