Whitehall, described as more wonderful than any palace in Europe, was built by Henry Flagler on a foundation of personal tragedy and legal manipulation. After his first wife Mary Harkness died of tuberculosis in 1881, Flagler married Ida Alice Schwarz, who was institutionalized for mental illness. To divorce her, Flagler lobbied Florida legislators to pass a divorce law specifically allowing him to end his marriage on grounds of incurable insanity. He then married Mary Lily Keenan and built Whitehall as a wedding gift, transforming the mansion into Florida's premier winter resort. However, both women suffered tragic fates: Ida Alice spent her remaining years institutionalized, and Mary Lily died suddenly at 50 in 1917, with speculation about foul play. The palace was later converted to a hotel and finally restored as a museum, preserving its architectural grandeur while its darker history remains largely hidden from visitors.
