Nevada Earthquakes continue near Las Vegas. 5.7 EQ Papua New Guinea. Thursday activity.Added:
How's it going out there folks? Welcome back here to a Thursday. It is just about noon here. Thursday afternoon, April 30th, 20126, May, right around the corner. Crazy how quick this time is flying by right now. Here is the latest 24 hours of earthquake activity on the map. The latest quake shows a 1.8 eight across California there in the uh little red circle where it's still fairly active out here across the southern portion of the San Andreas fault. Uh overnight a number of twos and quite a few ones. Uh yesterday's three-pointers there still on the map up around the Redlands area. We had a 3.2 last night.
Uh also some activity uh further down south here along this area of the San Andreas fault uh past the 24-hour threshold. So things are still active.
Uh we're looking at uh see what we got about 45 earthquakes in total around the Southern California area. And the largest one's going to be that 3.2 from last night. Actually, we had quite a few twos in there. Uh so far today though, the largest in Southern California is going to be a 2.1 up around the Ventura area up along the coastline up here.
Uh, taking a look up north, uh, Bay Area, fairly quiet aside from a couple smaller quakes, including one right on the Hayward fault. That was from yesterday, though, a little 1.1.
So, just kind of keeping an eye on things out here. Northern California, roughly about the same. Two earthquakes here after midnight. All All of these are actually below the 2.0 threshold there. uh into the Pacific Northwest.
Relatively quiet conditions aside from a couple smaller quakes up and down the board, but really nothing major happening out here across the West. Uh we are seeing some some still after I guess you can call them aftershock activity there north of Las Vegas from the 4 point uh 4.4 earthquake that struck out there um yesterday.
There's that 4.4 near Alamo.
did have a couple uh at least one three-pointer. I noticed last night another three-pointer came into the mix.
This would be the largest aftershock so far uh following the 4.4. That was just after midnight there, a little 3.7. And the earthquakes continue throughout the morning with the last one here a couple hours ago 1.6. Just watching these clusters come and go. Uh Nevada has been way seismically more active than normal here in the last couple months with numerous swarms all over the place. A lot going on out there in the Great Basin region. Uh the activity around Fallon looks like things are starting to calm down. I do appreciate the input though from the local folks out there if they're feeling earthquake activity. Um I appreciate it because that lets me know here that uh we're still seeing the movement but it's going unreported.
Notice the earthquakes have completely halted uh 1.5 from yesterday looks like around 7:30 or so my time to a recent 2.6 at 4:30 in the morning. So there was nothing going on in between that time period. And then um yeah, I just find these time gaps a little unusual.
But uh if you are feeling these earthquakes, I appreciate the input there. Kind of helps me out. Um, one earthquake outside of Love, Nevada. That's from yesterday, though. It's a little two-pointer. The rest of Nevada looks pretty quiet out there. Uh, Utah outside of Provo, there's a small little sequence of I don't know if I'd call that a sequence, but just two little micro quakes out there this morning. A one pointer and a nine. Not a nine magnitude, but a little 0.9.
Yellowstone. Quiet. Super quiet. What's going on up there at the super volcano?
A whole lot of super nothingness, if you will. Let's see what we got here for the uh seismograph stations. Looks pretty quiet to me. I don't see uh really anything coming in. This is from yesterday. A little small spike of an earthquake. I will double check and verify with another seismograph station just to take a little look here. Looks pretty quiet, folks. Not a whole lot going on there at Yellowstone. It's been it's been the hot well, it's been the quiet zone here for quite a while. Texas oil field still rocking and rolling.
Nothing new out there. Just, you know, the same thing. It's oil fields and uh earthquakes. They go hand in hand, I guess. New Madrid seismic zone, little 1.8 from yesterday. Really nothing major going on across the eastern portion of the country. In fact, if you look here at the last 24 hours, largest magnitude goes to a a moderate earthquake around the Papa Guina area, 5.7 early this morning. Uh that follows some further deep activity here across the Tonga Trench. So, we're starting to fill in here around this plate boundary. As expected, we're still kind of lacking a little area here around the Solomon Islands eastward here up to about uh probably the Fiji area absent of earthquake activity, but more than likely that should fill in. My birds are going absolutely nuts right now. I got a couple parakeetses. I'm wondering if you guys could hear them in the background because they're a little noisy right now.
Uh there's cluster going on there across the Philippines area it looks like right along the Philippine trench here. Um yesterday a five-pointer. Some smaller quake activity being reported in there as well. So movement kicking up there around the Philippines and the Indonesia area. Uh we do have some newer activity up here along the Japan region.
Nothing big um but newer activity because this was absent from last night's um earthquake globe here around the Japan trench and also backside of the Nankai trough seen some activity.
Nothing big, just a couple smaller quakes there. Uh it does look like we've seen a 4.7.
USGS reporting that as a 4.5 early this morning here in that cluster zone where we've been having a lot of earthquake activity recently.
Uh Alaska a little quiet up there right now. Notice the uh northern portion here of the Pacific plate absent of for the most part absent of earthquake activity aside from a little 2.9. This area has been getting hammered with a lot of earthquake activity here recently. Uh but today it looks like it's taken a little break. Uh the rest of the globe here, typical zones, middle America trench and central America area that uh lot of red rings there indicating some older activity from yesterday. Okay, so not a whole lot of newer movement. We do have a 3.5 here. Looks like that's off the coast of um maybe Panama area down here across the plate boundary, but nothing big going on as you can see on the globe. And uh let's see some earthquake activity along the Peru Chile trench there across Peru and the Chile region. Nothing big. Just the typical the typical subduction zone earthquakes that happen on any given day. The Atlantic Ocean fairly quiet. the Mediterranean region roughly about the same as well.
Uh couple newer quakes down here. Well, at least one of them. A lot of happenings going on down here across this area around a triple point boundary between three major plates.
Uh it's going to be this area uh back over here.
Looks like that's where that's occurring. Couple fours stirring up in the last 24 hours.
Definitely looks like the increasing amount of pressure uh out here across the western Pacific is uh heightened today. Nothing big going on, but it is moving across the New Zealand area.
Number of threes finally making their way across the board here across South Island. Uh but nothing big. Just seems to be uh an occasional four and a couple different threes on any given day. But there's always a likelihood of something bigger going on down there across New Zealand.
Let's take a look here at the Kilaway volcano site real quick. See what we're uh looking at far as episode 46, I believe. Coming up, uh no new updates. This was put out put out there a uh about a week ago when the alert level was dropped. uh deformation data across the Kilawaway volcano shows us that we're kind of going down here in terms of deflation.
Now, you know, we've seen it in the past. This should according to other, you know, past run-ups here to the eruption. This is all inflation leading up to the eruption point and then this is during the eruption which is deflationary and then we go back up again. So, we're going up, but now we're starting to go back down. This should round up here and continue upwards if this continues to go down beyond you know anything that we've seen here in a year and oh year and almost a year and a half now since this uh rinse and repeat cycle has been going on that uh you know it's fairly lengthy eruption phase here.
If that goes down then we got a problem.
That means that something else is going on down below where magma has found a new uh area to roam around down there underneath the summit area. But right now, uh nothing tells me for certain that that's happening. But we do have to watch that deflation area. If it continues to drop abnormally, then that's gone somewhere else. And more than likely, the eruption there across those two craters at the summit will be coming to an end after a year and a half of uh uh eruptions.
But we shall continue to watch that, folks. Um flaring activity. Looks like we're dying off here. Notice the sizzling. The fajitas are starting to get cold there. No more sizzling on the uh the platter that comes out at a at a a Mexican restaurant. I always refer this sizzling and static, if you will, to uh hot fajitas coming out when they uh when the server brings it out to you and sets it on the table. It's just sizzling. Well, that sizzling starting to fade away a little bit. Uh there's still a little bit of crackling going on there. Um but it does look like we're starting to go down here. Let's see what we got for the magnetogram image.
See if there's anything of any noteworthy mentioning. See what's going on here with these sunspots is they're separating, splitting, and they're not filling back in here with um uh polarity differences. It's just kind of separating, indicating a a decaying stage. Same for this one over here. I was I was watching this one. It looks like that one was starting to gain some momentum and and maybe be a major solar flare producer, but that uh it doesn't look like that's going to be the case here. The majority of these sunspots are starting to um fade away. I don't see anything really that's uh going to spark up any major flaring activity. We might see, you know, maybe a low gradede m flare.
Here's a little sunspot that Kevin's got circled. Two of them. Uh and this one's kind of popped up out of the blue, but it doesn't look like much right now. Uh but we'll keep an eye on those two as they uh further get into the Earth directed view. As far as the far side of the sun, we can take a peek here over at the far side and see what we got.
Um, this is well, it's about a day old.
About a day old, but we can still get a, you know, a visualization here what's going on on the far side. This is the Earth facing side of the sun. Far side over here, eastern limb. And there's not a whole lot coming.
There might be some weaker sunspots out here, these darker cores. Uh but I don't see anything of any major uh noteworthy mentioning there for any uh solar sunspots coming around. Looks a little quiet. So the flare threat uh still somewhat elevated, but I suppose these will drop here pretty soon.
They're showing about a 10% chance for X flare. I'm thinking probably back down to a 1% just the way those u magnetogram magnetogram images look there. Not a whole lot of complexity with those sunspots.
Uh 65% chance for inflare reasonable would be probably around 50. C flare, we're kind of kind of dropping back down into the B flare category. So these guys showing 99% chance there.
Uh no major roars there in the forecast for now. Just uh kind of watching things. Excuse me. There is a chronal hole up here. Number 49. Decent size chronal hole. Look how far north it is.
According, you know, to this image here, we're not even going to be geoeffective.
It's not even looking anywhere near the planet. It's got more of a northward point to it. I don't expect any high-speed solar windstream effects on the planet uh with that position of that cornal hole.
Uh let's take a look here at any close approach asteroids. I was just looking at that a minute ago. Um no major surprises. All millions of miles away. Damn. You know, I suppose one of these days we'll wake up and see a super close approach. We've been pretty fortunate, though. I mean, we've had, you know, a number of fireballs have come into the atmosphere. And surprisingly, uh, undetected.
One of these days, we're going to get a big one out here, I'm sure. Just a matter of time.
Uh, severe weather threat today. Nothing major going on. And in fact, the main threat appears to be a little bit of high-speed solar wind or excuse me, surface wind, right? I would hope we don't get solar wind at the surface. I don't know if that'd be good or not.
Probably not. Means our atmosphere has been gone, wiped off. Uh but wind from these thunderstorms there. A little bit of hail threat there across Texas and portions of Louisiana down south here as well. Um for the day two outlook, this is going to be for Friday. Roughly about the same zones. Nothing uh I don't see anything big going on there. No major tornado outbreaks. Nothing uh nothing big happening for now. Quick glance at the uh numerical models. West Coast.
We're getting a little bit of rain out here stirring up maybe some thunderstorms as we head towards early next week, first part of May.
Um let's see if we got anything major coming. I don't see anything major for the West Coast. Just, you know, chances of uh some rain. It's really hasn't been too bad yet.
As far as the heat goes, back in March, we cooked. Uh, that was that was crazy to have 90 degree days back in March.
But, uh, April's been pretty good.
Brought us up on the rainfall a little bit. Um, if we look at the statistical data here in terms of where we're at far as averages go, we can bring this back out here and check out the uh, the world view or the states view here. last 15 days we'll use and we'll use the uh precipitation uh anomaly a mixed bag I would say quite a bit but if you look over here across my neck of the woods across the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area we've you know picked up quite a bit of rain here in April uh April's one of those months where we normally stop talking about rain and temperatures climb and it gets dry but we've actually had a decent April here. May, you know, May really starts to cook out here. I don't think we'll see much of rain, but you never know. We We could either way. It's uh above average for the uh temp the precipitation anomaly.
Southern California little dry down there this last couple weeks. Uh New Mexico and Arizona, I'm sure this will fill in once we get the monsunala moisture going. And you can see where a lot of the severe weather was with all the green. Um, and of course over here across portions of the south, you guys got a lot of rain coming up here in the next couple days. So, that should help benefit uh the lack of rain that they've had over here across the southeast. That will fill in, I'm sure, as well.
Even the last 30 days there, you can see where that severe weather has just been coming in there and hitting that specific line that uh is all green on the map.
All right. Uh let's see what else is going on here, folks. Uh seismograph stations out there look pretty quiet, but uh anything, you know, like I say, anything can happen at any given time here. We definitely have an increase here across the center portion of, you know, the Pacific plate and the adjacent plate here, the Filipino plate. So, increasing pressure around this area.
It's almost like a arrow, right? You can see where things are starting to uh fill in. So, watch this area today.
uh potentially for some larger movement.
What do we got there? 2 point 2 2.0 coming in right now to California.
Let's see here. Is run back up.
2.1 uh just off the San Andreas fault here.
Looks like it's off the uh the creeping section right along the mountain range here. The co coastal hills. Not really mountains. We got mountains up north here, but these more or less just like hills.
I mean 5,200 that's I guess it would be considered mountains. The Diablo range over here. This is near Griswald Griswald Hills.
Little 2.1 very shallow earthquake.
All right. Well, have a good one folks.
We'll be keeping an eye on things if something big happens out here. Of course, we're always uh we're right here. We jump on it right away. So, we'll be back later tonight for the uh Thursday night update unless something major happens. Have a good one.
