In comedy-drama storytelling, character consistency and narrative structure are essential for audience engagement; when characters display inconsistent traits (such as an intelligent person suddenly acting foolishly) or when comedic elements overshadow meaningful plot development, viewers may struggle to connect emotionally with the story despite its entertainment value.

The Wonderfools: What Really Happened Here?Added:
When I saw the trailer of The Wonderfuls, I was confident that it's my kind of drama. The concept was great, the characters were quirky, and the story promised both comedy and wholesomeness, but I didn't really like it. Let's start from the beginning. The wonderful start off with an introduction of Uncheni, our female lead, a very joyous and eccentric girl with a heart disease living with her very rich grandmother. We're also introduced to Yun Jong, our master, an official at the city hall, who is very mysterious and somewhat of a recluse. There are also two sidekicks. Kangroin, an employee at Chinese grandmother's restaurant, who is very timid and very gullible. And we have Sonangun, a regular at the city hall, who is always there to complain about a bad smelling waste sever in his locality. Now, Chenny wants to travel the world. And her grandmother doesn't permit her to. I mean, makes sense, right? She's a girl with a heart ailment after all. But that is exactly why Chenny wants to travel. She's sick. She might die anytime. What a waste it is going to be if she dies before she even gets to see anything. So she decides that with the help of Robin and Gyongun, she's going to fake her own kidnapping, get ransom from her grandmother, and travel around the world. In return, she's going to give Robin and Gyong a percentage of the ransom. But while shooting the abduction video, Jenny dies. Her two fake abductors are obviously traumatized by this, and after calculating the odds, they decide that they're going to dispose of her body in the waste sewer. But they are caught in the act by Yun Jong after a tussle in the toxic waters. And despite multiple requests by the fake abductors, Yun Jong calls the police and during questioning, they discover that Chenny has been resurrected. And that's not the only strange thing to happen. Chenny's heart disease has miraculously healed. She can also teleport. Robin is now unnaturally strong. And Gyongun, well, things stick to him. This group of wonderfuls and along with their master, Yuan Jong, embark on their journey to learn how to use their newfound powers and also save their city from the apocalypse. Now, I'll begin with all the problems I had with the drama. First, they concentrated a lot on the antics of the characters than actually proceeding with the plot.
I understand that a lot of it was done to help us connect with the characters, but it didn't do that for me. A lot of their antics felt more like standalone comic relief than meaningful character development. I understood very well who the characters are and what they are like, but I didn't feel more emotionally connected to them. And to be honest, I didn't enjoy the antics themselves for most part. Everything was simply too loud. I also didn't like Uncheni. I know many viewers interpreted her as playful and spirited, but that was very far from my experience. Her quirkiness felt extremely forced, and I cringed even more when I learned that her character is supposed to be 27 years old. What 27year-old is behaving like this? At one point, I tried to justify it. Chenny has spent her entire life under the watch of an overproductive grandmother. Perhaps this exaggerated behavior is a way of injecting some color and excitement into an otherwise restricted life. But that explanation did not fully convince me.
Sheltered upbringing may lead to naivity, but it doesn't necessarily result in this level of immaturity. More importantly, the drama itself shows that Chenny is not inherently foolish. In the flashback where Robin recounts his school days, she comes across as an intelligent and perceptive person. She quietly asserts herself and protects him from being bullied with a confidence that is far more compelling than her present day characterization. If the situation of Robin getting bullied had occurred in the present timeline, I think Chenny would respond in a loud and exaggerated manner rather than with the subtle intelligence she displayed as a child. That is what made her character feel inconsistent to me. I know, I know she needs to be foolish for the name of the drama to make sense, but then make it consistent. Why show her as intelligent and perceptive as a teen?
Also, can we move on from showing loudness as the default sign of foolishness? As a quiet foolish person, I feel very underrepresented. Hey, sorry. I also felt that Yuan Jong's character could be built slightly better. Like, I know that the makers want us to believe that he really wants to meet his actual family, but then why is he collecting newspaper articles about the experiment, the doctor, and the orphanage? What's the point of saying, "I don't want to be involved," and then collecting every published thing about them. Shouldn't his file be more about trying to find a realistic radius from where the children in the orphanage could have been from? Also, if he knew that Chenny's grandmother was involved in this entire thing, why didn't he just go and ask her for answers first? It seemed like they were setting him up as someone who was looking for revenge and Midway changed his motive. There are also a lot of plot holes, but I have made peace with the fact that science fiction always comes with the few. Now, moving on to the things that I did like in this drama.
Among the Wonderfuls, I like Sonun Hon's character the most. His wife is the bread earner and is also the preferred parent. Gymun on the other hand is shown as somewhat useless and the troublemaker. Yet we see him keep emphasizing that he is the head of the family which seems like his way of covering up his insecurity about his lack of contribution. His saltiness towards people comes from believing that he failed to be a proper son, a proper husband and a proper father. So the moment he shines and his wife and daughter witness it all, it's simply wholesome. I also like how their powers were like a manifestation of their desires. Chenny's power was teleportation because what she wanted most was to travel. Robin's power was strength because he always thought of himself to be weak and just wanted to be stronger. I just couldn't understand why Gyongun got his sticky powers. So, what do you think? Do you have any theories about it? I also felt that the last two episodes were banging. I love the direction. The comic moments literally slapped. And even though these two episodes were also chaotic, they were more structured. This scene in particular held my heart because of the charisma just oozing out. I would have probably enjoyed it much more, but I didn't like the fact that the mastermind was dead long back, but his children still didn't stop. I understood that they wanted revenge, but I didn't understand where they were planning to go with it. Like, they needed researchers to bring their father's vision to life and needed a good amount of understanding of the science behind it themselves. The only one that could take the plan ahead was Juran who had the mind controlling abilities. But even she was succumbing to her side effects.
So where was everything really going?
Personally, this drama didn't work out for me. Some people felt that it would have been better if there were 12 episodes instead so that we had more time to explore the relationships between the wonderfuls. I don't think so. The drama had a lot of time to do that. It just chose not to or couldn't figure out how to write in jokes while exploring the relationships. I think with more crisp writing, this could have been a good movie instead. But it is definitely a fresher watch. And regardless of how I felt about the overall execution, I'm glad the creators attempted something like this. If you enjoy slapstick comedy and highly chaotic humor, there is a good chance you will have a lot more fun with this drama than I did because the runtime is absolutely packed with it.
