Even severely contaminated industrial sites can undergo successful ecological recovery through environmental remediation, as demonstrated by Rocky Mountain Arsenal, where chemical weapons production and pesticide manufacturing left massive contamination that was cleaned up over 40 years, transforming the area into a thriving wildlife refuge where deer and buffalo now roam.

The Most Polluted Place You Can VisitHinzugefügt:
On this land, the United States government dumped over a million gallons of chemical weapons, and today it's a buffalo habitat. This is Rocky Mountain Arsenal, 10 miles from downtown Denver, and this is one of the most contaminated places in the world. The army made mustard gas, napalm, and sarin here, and then Shell came in and made pesticide.
Both ended up dumping massive amounts of chemicals straight into the ground, and a pipe burst, leaking benzene at such high levels they caused an earthquake.
The craziest part of all, the land was too large and too valuable to go to waste, so the government decided to clean it up. 40 years later, it's one of the best places to see nature in Denver, and it truly is a place where the deer and the buffalo roam.
