Epictetus, a Roman slave who became one of history's greatest philosophers on freedom, taught that true freedom comes from distinguishing between what is within our control (our judgments, desires, and responses) and what is not (external events, other people, circumstances). When we lose our minds over things outside our control, we hand our freedom to those external factors, effectively becoming slaves to them. True freedom is achieved when we recognize that our response, not the event itself, is what we are responsible for.

Epictetus Was a Slave Who Understood Freedom Better Than AnyoneAñadido:
Epictetus was a Roman slave. He owned nothing. He controlled nothing about his external life.
And he became one of history's greatest philosophers on freedom.
His argument was simple.
There are things that are up to you, your judgements, your desires, your responses.
And there are things that are not up to you.
Other people, the weather, traffic, a zipper that catches.
He called this the dichotomy of control.
And here's how it applies right now, today, to the small stuff that irritates you.
When you lose your mind over something outside your control, you've handed your freedom to that thing.
That rude driver owns you now.
The slow internet connection owns you.
Epictetus called that slavery.
And he knew what slavery was.
You are free the moment you decide that your response, not the event, is what you're responsible for.
