[00:00:43]Then came Zheng He in the early 1400s, [music] a powerful admiral who sailed massive fleets to Java and the Malay Peninsula, partly to expand Chinese influence.

[00:00:53]Centuries later, mass migration [music] began as poor farmers from Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan fled poverty, overcrowding, and lack of land in southern China.

[00:01:03]Many settled in places like [music] the Ayutthaya Kingdom in Thailand, taking difficult labor jobs while wealthy landowners and officials [music] remained in China.

[00:01:12]Soon after migration surged when treaty ports like Xiamen and Fuzhou opened after the Opium [music] War, making it easier for people to leave China. At the same time, European colonial [music] powers used Chinese migrants as cheap labor, where some later became traders, [music] tax collectors, and key economic middlemen.

[00:01:31]Over time, some Chinese communities [music] mixed with locals, forming groups like the Peranakans, while others stayed [music] distinct, shaping both cooperation and tension in Southeast Asia.
