From China to ASEAN: A History of Migration and Trade #MigrationHistory #ASEAN #CulturalHeritageAñadido:
How did the Chinese people arrive in Southeast [music] Asia and why did so many of them leave China for unfamiliar lands across modern Malaysia, Thailand, [music] Indonesia, and the Philippines?
The earliest arrivals were Buddhist monks, traders, and envoys sailing from China into Southeast Asia, [music] a region of islands and kingdoms just south of China.
At first, Arab merchants controlled [music] these sea routes, but by the 13th century, Chinese traders began operating directly [music] in ports like Malacca, Manila, and Batavia, now known as Jakarta.
Chinese travelers also described places [music] like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, providing some of the earliest detailed records of Southeast Asia's major civilizations.
Then came Zheng He in the early 1400s, [music] a powerful admiral who sailed massive fleets to Java and the Malay Peninsula, partly to expand Chinese influence.
Centuries later, mass migration [music] began as poor farmers from Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan fled poverty, overcrowding, and lack of land in southern China.
Many settled in places like [music] the Ayutthaya Kingdom in Thailand, taking difficult labor jobs while wealthy landowners and officials [music] remained in China.
Soon after migration surged when treaty ports like Xiamen and Fuzhou opened after the Opium [music] War, making it easier for people to leave China. At the same time, European colonial [music] powers used Chinese migrants as cheap labor, where some later became traders, [music] tax collectors, and key economic middlemen.
Over time, some Chinese communities [music] mixed with locals, forming groups like the Peranakans, while others stayed [music] distinct, shaping both cooperation and tension in Southeast Asia.
