And the boys were not even allowed to be in the room when it happened, which somehow made the whole thing feel even stranger.

A long- time employee named Stan Thorn told the Observer newspaper that some head teachers went through canes like nobody's business. The trade continued well into the '70s. On the 17th of May, 1972, 10,000 schoolchildren walked out of their classrooms across the country and marched through central London with banners that read, "No to the cane." Police struggled to contain the crowds. The children wanted to reach Trafalgar Square, but were turned back.
