When a star's core reaches iron, it loses all outward pressure support and collapses catastrophically in less than a second, forming a neutron star about 20 km in diameter from a core of 1.4 solar masses, while the outer layers bounce off this rigid surface and create a shockwave that triggers a supernova explosion.
