[00:00:00]What we are talking about today is the cinematic equivalent of what in the journalism world is called a fluff piece. A creative output that carries little critical thinking, prioritizes light-hearted entertainment alone, and as long as it isn't actively working to whitewash something nefarious is mostly harmless. This fluff piece is not an unwelcome addition to pop culture really. However, as the main character of this film is given to deride someone's star satoral choice, it isn't groundbreaking. Let us talk about the Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Merl Stre and Stanley Tui star of the Devil Wears Prada 2 now in movie theaters. Hello, my name is Sarata. If you are new to this channel, welcome. [00:01:07]>> David Frankle returns to direct the sequel 20 years after the first movie broke all kinds of box office records.

[00:01:14]It was optioned for a TV series turned into a musical stage play and made Lauren Weiseberger from whose book it was adapted super rich. I assume this time too the story is very simple. Andy despite being a successful and award-winning journalist is out of a job because this is 2026 and journalism as Miranda Priestley later refers to it is the sinking Titanic. Stars align and Andy finds herself back at the magazine Runway once again working for Miranda.

[00:01:46]Runway is going through its own PR crisis, having accidentally promoted a fast fashion brand named Speed Fash.

[00:01:54]Apparently, no one at Runway realized the true nature of Speed Fash and ran with the incriminating piece despite the company's name being, you know, Speed Fash. Andy now as the features editor at runway might just save the day for everybody. But as the saying goes in Hindi/ udu the existential crisis around journalism comes for runway. Will Andy be able to save the magazine and finally win Miranda's approval. The fact that this film feels like a fluff piece is a little bit of irony lost on the filmmaker and returning writer Alen Broch McKenna because Anne Hathaway as Andy in this film her whole thing at runway is to steer the magazine away from fluff pieces toward more serious journalism. Now, at no point we're actually ever made privy to what exactly Andy is writing, but one assumes at least part of it is a takedown of fast fashion or, you know, speed fash Miranda's primary assistant, this time played by the striking Simone Ashley.

[00:02:58]This job is still belonging to somebody very snooty, but the primary job profile now seems to be to ensure that Miranda says the correct things when she is in company, politically correct. So there's no jokes about drugs, there's no jokes on different body types, or there's no overworking assistance to the extent of cruelty. One can almost sense the woke check boxes this film wants to take off, which is a great thing. Don't get me wrong, one can never be too inclusive in life. But will I get yelled at for saying I almost missed the bitchiness of the original film? I can explain here.

[00:03:33]Miranda's teeth are filed down. This Anna Wintor standin is not nearly as biting as she once was.

[00:03:40]>> You also know her.

[00:03:41]>> We were at runway at the same time.

[00:03:42]Miranda, where was I?

[00:03:46]>> The curtains that were peeled back in 2006 for the whole world to peak behind.

[00:03:51]Now you see they've stayed that way for the last 20 years because thanks to social media and other narratives, copycats, films, series, nothing you see in this film now feels particularly spectacular or inspiring or controversial at the in the very least.

[00:04:08]Andy has more power. She has more life experience and a much more refined sense of style as a character. So the stakes are not nearly high enough for her.

[00:04:16]Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton now works at Dior. She's in retail, so she's not directly competition to Andy, which was one of the main things of the original film. A real maybe kind of sort of conflict presents itself about 45 minutes into this screenplay, until which time the story in essence resembles more of Friends episode from 1999 than something worthy of being the biggest film in the world in 2026.

[00:04:43]OnePlus 1 is always two in this universe. Some jokes feel even laborious and not one curveball curves enough for you to crane your neck along with it.

[00:04:50]But hey, the fashion is fashioning and Hatheraway's high-pitched performance is working hard. And at least this time, Andy does not have to decide between her boyfriend and her female boss.

[00:05:04]>> No, you are not.

[00:05:05]>> Yeah, we are all so thrilled.

[00:05:07]>> Of course, there is the parade of supporting actors here to entertain you.

[00:05:11]Justin Thorough is a perennially tickled billionaire Benji. Benji is in an amalgam of Elon Musk and Jeffrey Bezos.

[00:05:19]George Clooney's Lake Ko home shows up where Benji lives that makes you all kinds of envious even though George Clooney himself is not in this film.

[00:05:26]Kenneth Brana is in this film. There's three scenes he has with the metal street. He plays Miranda's partner. An elaborate song performance is carried out by Lady Gaga. Donatella Versace gets yelled at by Emily Blunt. PJ Novak walks around rofully and more beautiful guests appear in even more beautiful European locations throughout this film. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not entirely vapid, but it also isn't particularly groundbreaking either. There's a shadow of what it could have been. Maybe it was trying to address two very important issues of our time via comedy. One, the death of serious journalism and two, the excesses of high fashion industry and how the adverse effects of both these are felt almost exclusively by women who try to bring about change in the power structures and hierarchies of the world.

[00:06:16]However, I will not entirely discount this film's merits as a fun, wholly acceptable way to spend a summer afternoon with pals or a date before or after your lunch. A little treat brought to you by the biggest and wealthiest in Hollywood. You might even leave the theater with a renewed pep in your step, a song on your lip. If the film encourages you to pursue that dream of moving to that city and go for that job, let it be that tiny flutter of wind beneath your baby wings. Why not?

Here, as the name suggests, I recommend titles I'd like you to watch. Today, let's stay in this silly comedy space, shall we? Anne Hathaway starred in this film titled The Idea of You that released in 2024. Now, that film was also based on a novel. And Hathaway played a 40-year-old single mother, Sen. Sen runs an art gallery and as the cookie crumbles, she finds herself in a relationship with a young pop star who's a member of a boy band whom her daughter really likes. That film is all kinds of fun. It is directed by Michael Shoalter who also made Kuml Nani's The Big Sick. Incredible movie.

[00:07:27]Incidentally, Shoalter and Haway are coming together again. Their next film is titled, it's a thriller. It's called Varity. Once again, that also is based on a book. And um and Hathaway is also coming in Christopher Nolan's Odyssey this summer. But until then, check out the idea of view.
