[00:00:02]We need to talk about the state of Valerant ranked again. The radiant threshold was recently lowered from 450 RR all the way down to 300 RR. With this change, Riot Games said they made no changes to MMR.

[00:00:16]And I'm going to be honest here, I think they lied because the thumbnail of this video is not clickbait. I lost 30 RR in one game and only gained 12 on a win.

[00:00:29]All while duo queuing an immortal. I have never gained 12 RR for a win on my main account that has been radiant 10 times while being in Immortal 2. So, how did we get here? Well, I've been doing a challenge recently where I've been trying to get back to Radiant while only playing four agents: Gecko, Killjoy, Rays, and Mix. In the last episode, I made it to Immortal 3, less than 100 RR away from Radiant, which is still weird.

[00:32:50]I ended up playing a few more days after this, so I'll let those clips play as we talk about the state of everything.

[00:32:56]Before we get started, we need to talk about MMR. MMR stands for matchmaking rating. And if you didn't know, Valerant has this, and it basically means you have two ranks. You have your rank that you're currently in, and then you have your rank where the game thinks you should belong. If your MMR is higher than your current rank, for example, if you're gold, but the game thinks you should be platt, you're going to gain more than you lose, and the game will help you get to the rank it thinks you belong in. On the other side of that, if you're plat and the game thinks you should be gold, you're going to lose a lot more than you win, and the game's going to try to pull you down to where it thinks you belong. This system, in theory, is very helpful and helps a lot of games across the spectrum maintain a pretty balanced matchmaking system.

[00:33:36]However, Valerant's MMR system over the years has become increasingly flawed.

[00:33:40]It's become more and more aggressive about where the game thinks you belong.

[00:33:46]And in order to actually climb, you have to prove the system wrong so that you really belong in that rank. And dare I say, you have to prove it more than people that actually belong in that rank. This is where I think the system is flawed. Let's take a player that genuinely belongs in plat right now.

[00:34:02]They have the skill level of the average plat player and they should be in that rank. If the game thinks they belong in gold, that player who should actually be in plat will end up in gold over a longer period of time. Because in order to prove that system wrong, you have to have a positive win rate. And not even just a positive win rate, in some cases, you have to have a 65 to 70% win rate in order to just be going even, which is insane to think about in any rank, especially in a game like Valerant that has so many variables. If that player genuinely belongs in platt, there's no way that they're going to be able to prove this system wrong because they shouldn't have to have over a 50% win rate if they actually belong in this rank. Does that make sense? Let me make it more simple. It's unreasonable for a player that is in the correct rank to have an increasingly higher win rate if they're actually in the rank they belong. So, as a result of this, I don't think you should be going down in rank if you're in the rank you belong while having a 50% win rate. Crazy take, I know, but that is not the system that is in place. If you are the chosen one and you get bad MMR or some people are actually getting great MMR, the game thinks they should be a higher rank and they'll get boosted up to a rank they don't even belong in there. This MMR system is way too determinant on where your account is able to actually go because at a certain point it becomes unrealistic for any person to actually climb after they've gotten to a certain point. Let's take these games that I just showed you on my main account as an example. So on day one, I went three wins and four losses. I lost 62 RR for three wins and four losses. I'm down the equivalent of four wins. In order to have gone even that day, I would have needed eight wins. On day two, I won five games and lost three. Positive win rate, but I was only up one RR. On day three, I managed to get six wins and three losses. I was up 17 RR. We're finally climbing. And it only took having a 67% win rate to do that. But in total over those 3 days, I won 14 games, lost 10, and lost 45 RR. That's a 58% win rate to be down half a rank. I realistically need a 70% win rate to be climbing consistently. And at a certain point, winning two games for every one loss isn't going to be enough, cuz as you saw, I started losing 30 RR as I got into Immortal 3 and only gaining 13 or 12. This ratio of wins to losses isn't really saying that, oh, I shouldn't be in the rank I'm in. It's pulling me down very far. The game thinks I should be immortal one. I don't know why I ended Immortal 3 last act, but it thinks I belong at a lower rank that I should be.

[00:36:44]And in order for me to prove it wrong, I need to have seriously a 70% win rate, if not higher. That shouldn't be happening to anyone unless you're pushing like top 100. Seriously, if you look right now at the rank one player who's pushing 800 RR, he's getting comparable gains and losses to me in Immortal 2. Make this make any sense.

[00:37:09]Just because the game thinks he should be a higher rank, he's getting the same wins and losses as me while being rank one. Literally rank one. What? Like I said, this isn't happening to just me though. Tons of players are feeling this. Trick is hard stuckle one right now. In every rank, if the magic MMR system has decided the rank that you belong in, it is going to be incredibly hard to climb. And in order for you to prove it wrong, you have to have an unrealistic win rate given the variables of the game. Even some of the best players in the game are only maintaining a 60% win rate, which is incredibly high. And if I did that, I would lose rank over time. Now, this is why I think this problem is really bad for the game right now because Radiant's threshold got lowered to 300 RR. It does take less wins overall to actually hit Radiant.

[00:38:01]So, the amount of wind traders, stream snipers, and actual cheaters is at an all-time high because it's actually quicker to get Radiant now in theory. in in theory. I went back and looked at my history for the last 6 years, and this season has my highest win rate of any season with a reasonable amount of games, and I'm hard stuck immortal 2 as someone who's been Radiant over 10 times. What? I should feel ecstatic about how many games I won. But instead, I'm just feeling frustrated. Winning doesn't even feel good. I'm just chasing the feeling of not losing, which is not great. Every win feels like I'm getting the slightest gains ever and every loss feels like a kick in the balls. Now, I've asked this question to a few people and when you think about it, it's really problematic. Imagine you're a Riot dev.

[00:38:46]You're working on Valerant and your sole goal is to make as many people quit the game as possible. What would you do?

[00:38:54]Because I think what's happening to the game right now is coming directly out of that playbook. And that's terrifying to think about. Give players no incentive to grind by having no ranked rewards.

[00:39:04]Check. Don't change the meta frequently.

[00:39:06]Let busted agents just terrorize ranked indefinitely. Also, check. Let cheaters, win traders, stream snipers go unpunished. Uh, check. And the icing on the cake is to make people lose way more rank than they gain when they win. I I genuinely can't think of worse updates to roll out, unless it's just amplifying these problems more. Now, I don't want to just sit here and complain. I do love this game, but I'm going to echo a video that I put out almost 8 months ago now.

[00:39:32]Try something, please. Anything. Just take MMR out of the equation for a season. Be completely transparent about it. Make a social post and be like, "Hey guys, we don't know how this is going to go, but it's probably not going to be worse than right now. So, no MMR this season. Let's see what happens. Go put agent bands in the game for a season.

[00:39:51]Just try it out. I don't know. See what happens." And for the love of God, please put a ranked reward in the game that's not a gun, buddy. It's been years. I know there's a lot of updates coming to VCT, and VCT is such a big part of Valerant. I'm super excited for all the tournaments, but ranked needs just as much attention right now. People need to be incentivized to play the game so that they're invested in watching VCT. Otherwise, they're going to move on to another game or doing anything else and they won't care to watch VCT at all because they're not playing the game or staying up to date with the game at all.

[00:40:19]VCT is starting to compete in viewership with a peanut. Is that not crazy to think about with the scale of Valerant and everything that's getting put into this? I don't know. Just something to think about. Anyways, I do still love this game, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to take it seriously in any sort of competitive way. Like, I don't want to go pro or anything, but I also don't want to just be clawing my eyeballs out playing ranked. I think that's where it lands me with this challenge. I wanted to hit Radiant and make a short explaining how terrible this system is from the perspective of like, wow, I just hit Radiant and it was awful. But honestly, I don't even want to try anymore. The fact that I have to stream on a 30- secondond delay and can get thrown onto a team with ascendant players that have never been immortal and then when we get stomped because the entire other team is immortal, I lose 30 RR while only gaining maybe 14. That's not fun or challenging. It just is a masochistic sisphus simulator except the boulder is crushing Sisphus. So, I'm good. I don't want to try for raiding anymore. I like I'm just not I'm not going to take it seriously on my main account. I don't think I'm going to keep playing on my main, chilling, having a good time. But yeah, I I just I can't take it seriously. It's just not worth it. If I end up hitting Radiant, that's great.

[00:41:35]Awesome. But I'm not going to sacrifice my mental for it. I'm just going to try to have some fun. So, that's what games are supposed to be about anyway. I'm sad because I don't really like throwing in the towel on anything, especially when it comes to these challenges. But again, I'm at the highest win rate I've ever been at and I'm hard stuck immortal 2.
