Victory Day (May 9th) is Russia's most significant memorial day commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, known as the Great Patriotic War. The day is uniquely characterized by 'tears in the eyes' because Russia lost 27 million people during the war, with the majority being civilians who died from hunger, disease, torture, and violence, while approximately 8 million soldiers died on battlefields. This creates a profound emotional experience where the joy of victory is mixed with deep sorrow for those who sacrificed their lives. The Immortal Regiment march, where participants carry portraits of their fallen relatives, serves as a powerful tradition to ensure that future generations remember the sacrifices made for freedom and independence.

[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Thank you for coming to our event because today is May May of 9th, the Victory Day for my country. It's a very special day because we call it the celebration with the tears in their eyes because why tears? Because we lost 27 million of our people and the biggest part of them were not soldiers, the civilians who died from hunger, from diseases, from tortures, from shooting. And there was about 8 million soldiers on the battlefields. That's why it's a very very special. The day for us when the joy of our victory mixed with the sorrow for those who sacrificed their lives on the battlefields.
This day we praise and remember those who struggled with uh Nazism, with fascism during World War II, during the Great Patriotic War. And you I think have the chance to show that to see that uh people are taking the portrait of soldiers. Their This means that in each family there was a soldier in who struggled for the freedom and independence of uh our country during the Great Patriotic War.
And I'm very glad that more and more people Russians who are living in Malaysia taking part in in this event every year. And I'm especially uh glad and highly appreciate that there are a lot of children. Because we should continue our history. We should remember the casualties, the people who sacrificed their lives for our victory. And it's a very important that especially young generation, boys and girls should remember about this event.
And it's I think we are celebrating this Victory Day in each family. For me it's not only the state celebration, the state Victory Day. It's a family event because my father from the 1942 was on the battlefield from He started his uh way on the war from Stalingrad, my uncle, my aunt, some of my relatives did not return from the battlefield. They died during the war. That's why it's a very special day.
And I remember when I was a little kid, but when my father and his friends, my relatives, gathered together in the family, yes, they were of course they congratulate each other with the victory day, but simultaneously there were tears, they were crying because we have a lot of losses.
Just imagine, 27 million people from different republics of the former Soviet Union.
My name is Alina. I'm Russian language teacher here in Malaysia.
So, I joined today the event here in Russian center. Actually, I was the one who was at the beginning of the event. I was the one who was collecting all the portraits from the people to keep the history alive. Here, far from our country, we still can keep it.
Very proud, first of all, because we have so many people here gathered for the memories. And of course, this is the celebration with the tears on eyes because you know, 27 million people died during the Great Patriotic War. We call it not Second World War, but Great Patriotic War. And so, all families lost somebody.
I lost my grandfather, my grandmother's brother. So, we all have many lost. So, we cry and also commemorate our our relatives.
Russia, this is public holiday. We have a usually a parade and we have events like Immortal Regiment. So people with the portraits of their relatives come to the streets and walk to show that we remember. We will not forget.
