In July 1961, Soviet submarine K-19's nuclear reactor ruptured 300 miles off Greenland with no backup cooling system. Captain Zateyev ordered eight engineers into the reactor compartment to weld a makeshift coolant pipe while radiation reached 1,000 roentgens per hour. Each man worked in 5-minute shifts before being dragged out vomiting and burned. They successfully built the pipe and cooled the reactor, but all eight died within 3 weeks. The American fleet 70 miles away never knew how close they came to a nuclear catastrophe.
