CALEB DOWNS IS DIFFERENT! Cowboys Rookie Camp BREAKDOWN + Kobe Durant Jersey DRAMA π₯Added:
Dallas just wrapped rookie mini camp and if you think this was just another weekend of light work and facility tours, you need to hear what actually went down because we've got a surprise signing that happened literally hours ago. We've got Caleb Downs already directing traffic like a five-year veteran and we've got one Cowboys player who's about to become public enemy number one if he doesn't make a decision real soon and before we dive into all of it, I need you to hit that subscribe button right now because this channel is covering every single Cowboys move the second it happens and we're sitting at way too few subscribers for the amount of breaking news we're bringing you. So do me a favor, smash that sub button and let's get into this because what happened at rookie camp this weekend tells us everything we need to know about where this team is headed in 2025.
Uh the first piece of news that broke just moments ago is that the Cowboys signed offensive lineman DJ Wingfield and honestly, I didn't think they were going to sign any of the tryout guys, but here we are and this dude has an interesting story that you need to know about because it involves eligibility drama and position versatility that could actually give him a real shot at the practice squad. Wingfield was supposed to play at USC this past season, but he thought he was going to be eligible under the whole COVID year rules and turned out those years didn't count for him. So he never actually suited up for the Trojans even though he was technically on the roster and that's after he spent time at Purdue and two years before that at New Mexico. So this guy has been around the block. He's listed at 6'3 310 lb and from what we're hearing, he's going to play guard for Dallas even though he's played both right tackle and right guard in the past and the fact that he had a tryout with Denver before this tells you other teams were looking at him too. His agent Brett Tressler announced the signing earlier today and now the Cowboys offensive line room sits at 16 players with one roster spot left and the crazy part is this guy wasn't even on anyone's radar 24 hours ago, but now he's got a legitimate chance to work his way onto the practice squad if he can show enough in camp and that's the kind of depth move that might not make headlines, but could matter down the line if injuries hit. Now, let's get into the real story from rookie mini camp and that's Caleb Downs because if you thought this kid was going to need time to adjust or learn the playbook or figure out the NFL, you were dead wrong. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker couldn't stop raving about him. And when I say raving, I mean he used phrases like premium instincts and his brain is connected to his feet and you can tell his football intellect and honestly it sounds like Downs is exactly what we saw on tape at Alabama, which is a football savant who processes the game faster than almost anyone else on the field. Parker specifically mentioned that Downs was directing traffic out there already reading and reacting like a vet and that there's no difference between his tape from 3 years ago and now, meaning this dude has been consistent and elite since day one. And the phrase Parker used was he's a natural football player, one of those first picks in the schoolyard and that's not coach speak, that's genuine excitement. Uh what really stood out though is that Parker said Downs is going to have natural versatility and it's just a matter of what he can handle mentally and how they fit everything together, which tells me they're planning to move him around and use him in multiple spots, whether that's safety, nickel, corner or even in the box. And here's what nobody is talking about yet, rookie corner Devin Moore was apparently blown away by Downs, because Downs has already learned the entire playbook and is working at multiple positions and we're talking about a guy who's been in the building for what, a few days and he's already got the whole system down. Uh the other insane detail is that Downs already has the number one selling rookie jersey for the Cowboys and think about that for a second, a safety/nickel corner is outselling everyone else in the draft class and they haven't even shipped his real jersey yet because he's still wearing number 18, which looks absolutely disgusting on him and they're waiting to finalize his actual number before they start printing them, but the demand is already through the roof and that tells you how much hype is around this kid and how much the fan base believes he's going to change this defense.
Speaking of the defense, let's talk about Christian Parker himself because he's the new defensive coordinator and I want to know from you guys, what's your confidence level in him 1 to 10? Drop it in the comments right now because I think the early signs are really promising and here's why. The Cowboys did way more drills and actual work at this rookie camp compared to last year when it was basically just a facility tour and some light walk-through stuff, and that tells me Parker is a guy who wants to get after it from day one and isn't going to waste time easing guys in. Downs was asked what he likes about Parker's defense, and he said it's very multiple, able to play a lot of different fronts and coverages, and the key thing is making it all marry together, meaning everything is connected and cohesive. And that's exactly what you want to hear from a defensive coordinator because if you can't tie your scheme together, it doesn't matter how complex or creative it is, it's just going to confuse your players. I've seen too many new coaches come in and just throw a bunch of stuff at the wall without any real structure, but Parker seems like a detail-oriented guy who knows how to build a system that actually makes sense. And that's encouraging because this defense needs a reboot after last year's disaster, and if Parker can get these rookies and young guys to buy in early, we might actually see some real improvement on that side of the ball. The fact that he's already getting praised for being multiple and detailed and organized is a great sign, and I'm cautiously optimistic that this hire is going to work out better than people think.
Let's move to the defensive line because Maliek Lawrence had a really interesting weekend working with BT Jordan, who Dallas basically stole from the Denver Broncos to be their pass rush consultant. And this is the kind of move that doesn't get enough attention, but could be massive for a guy like Lawrence. Uh Lawrence said that Jordan is very technical when it comes to steps, and specifically mentioned that Jordan doesn't want him false stepping, so they worked on that all day with a band under his foot to correct the issue. And they focused on get-off and explosive first step stuff, which is exactly what Lawrence needs to develop because the traits are there, but the refinement isn't yet. When Lawrence doesn't false step and gets a clean first step, he's got truly explosive potential off the edge. And if BT Jordan can coach that out of him consistently, we might have found a real weapon in the pass rush rotation, and that would be huge for a Cowboys team that desperately needs more pressure on the quarterback.
The fact that Dallas went out and brought in a dedicated pass rush consultant tells you they know this is a weakness and they're investing in fixing it. And yeah, it's rookie mini camp and everything is sunshine and roses right now, but the foundation they're laying with guys like Lawrence and the attention to detail they're demanding is exactly what this team has needed for years. So, I'm buying into the BT Jordan hire and I think it's going to pay off, especially with the young guys who are still moldable and hungry to learn.
On the linebacker side, we need to talk about John Room because this kid is starting off at the Mike linebacker spot and apparently he challenged someone to an Oklahoma drill, which if you don't know is basically just two guys running full speed at each other in a confined space and hitting as hard as possible.
And that's the kind of sicko mentality you need at middle linebacker in the NFL because that position is a car crash on every single play. Christian Parker compared Barham to Baron Browning who played at Ohio State and was drafted by Denver and played both inside linebacker and edge. And Parker said Barham has similar traits and they just need to bring him along and see how his brain works, which is another positive comp after we've already heard Zach Bond comparisons and I had Andrew Van Ginkel written down in my pre-draft notes. So, it seems like the Cowboys have a clear plan for how to deploy him.
It sounds like Barham and Eric Kendricks or DeMarvion Overshown are going to be the primary inside backers with guys like Justin Baron behind them. And then you've got Overshown and possibly Shemar James working the weak side spot. But honestly, in Parker's defense, the difference between Mike and Will isn't as rigid as it used to be. So, I wouldn't get too caught up in the labels. The point is Barham looks like he's going to be in the mix early. And if he's got that dog mentality and the athleticism to play multiple spots, he could end up being a steal in this draft class and give the Cowboys some real depth at a position that's been a weakness for way too long. Now, let's talk about some of the under the radar guys who stood out because Jordan Hudson, the undrafted free agent receiver, had a great day according to Nick Harris, who's a friend of the show and covers the team closely. And Harris tweeted that Hudson made a great catch that he scooped off the ground during routes on Air and was impressive overall. Hudson's body control is a major asset and I genuinely think he's got a chance to push for a 53-man roster spot and maybe he can't beat out Anthony Smith who was a draft pick, but I don't think those two are that far apart in terms of their potential impact. And we've seen the Cowboys hit on undrafted receivers before, so why not Hudson? And I want to hear from you guys, who do you think was the biggest winner from rookie mini camp?
Drop your answer in the comments because there were a lot of guys who flashed this weekend. On the tight end side, both Michael Trigg and D.J. Rogers are going to push for roster spots and tight ends coach Ryan Shanheimer went out of his way to praise them saying he's really excited about those two young men adding into a group that he feels is maybe one of the more stable positions on the roster and I guess it's stable in the sense that they just ran it back and added a couple UDFAs, but let's be real, the Cowboys have a history of finding undrafted tight ends who actually make the roster and contribute. So, don't sleep on Trigg and Rogers because one or both of them could end up being part of the rotation come September. Here's a fun aside that happened over the weekend. Cooper Beebe got married and the entire Cowboys offensive line showed up to the wedding looking sharp and Dak Prescott was there, too, serving as the president of the wedding or whatever role he played, but the whole crew was suited up and looking good except for Tyler Guyton who showed up in a sweater.
And listen, I get it. The dude is 24 years old, fresh out of college, and there's a very real chance this was the first wedding he's ever been to in his life. So, I'm not going to kill him for the outfit, but my guy, we need to get you into a suit next time because Tyler Smith was out there looking like a million bucks and you're standing next to him in a pullover, but at the same time you can tell how broad-shouldered Guyton is even in the sweater. So, maybe it's just hard to find formal wear that fits when you're that size. Regardless, it was cool to see the offensive line hanging out together off the field and building that chemistry because that unit is going to be crucial this season and the more they bond, the better they're going to play as a cohesive group. We also saw some second-year eligible players show up to rookie camp, which happens every year when guys who didn't get much playing time as rookies are allowed to participate and get extra reps and that's always a good thing because it gives them more face time with coaches and more chances to develop and we saw Tyan Holden, Marcellus Johnson, I know Odell who's still the international pathway player and Justin Baron all getting work in and anytime you can get extra reps and coaching, it's only going to help your development. So good for those guys for taking advantage of the opportunity. Um but here's where things get spicy and this is something I did not expect to be talking about but the fan base is starting to turn on Kobe Bryant and it's not because of his play, it's because he won't give up number two to Caleb Downs.
And look, I get it. Durant wants to get paid for giving up his number and reading between the lines, it sounds like they're working towards a deal and it's just a matter of how much money changes hands and that's fine. Like cool, get your half a million or whatever it ends up being but Kobe, you have to understand the fans are going to be mad at you for depriving them of seeing the new shiny toy in the right number because 18 looks absolutely terrible on Downs and everyone knows it and the longer this drags out, the more people are going to be frustrated with you and is it fair? Maybe not but that's the reality of the situation. So just take the money and give up the number and move on because this is not a fight you're going to win in the court of public opinion.
It's honestly weird that this has become a story line but here we are and I want to know from you, would you give up your number as a veteran for a rookie or would you make them pay to drop your take in the comments because I'm curious where the fan base stands on this.
In terms of guys who didn't have a great weekend, we've got to mention the tryout players who didn't get signed and as of right now that includes Maverick McIver, Zach Switzer, Cole Hudson, Jacob Graham who's a long snapper and Monty Rice who's the most notable name because he was a third round pick out of Georgia back in 2021 for Tennessee but he's kind of flamed out of the NFL due to injuries and inconsistent play and the fact that a veteran like him had to do a tryout tells you his stock has fallen pretty far and the Cowboys passed on him even with the Georgia connection. So that's not a great sign for his NFL future, but hey, at least he got a shot. Uh the only unsigned rookie right now is Malachi Lawrence, which happens every year where one or two guys are still working through the contract details, and he did sign the waiver to show up for camp, so it's just a matter of finalizing the language and getting everything official, and he'll sign soon and start getting paid. But, as of this moment, he's the lone holdout, and I'm not concerned about it at all because this is standard operating procedure for late-round picks and UDFAs. One last note that I think is worth mentioning, the Cowboys apparently worked the rookies so hard that at least one guy was puking during drills, and we don't know who it was. But, the fact that it happened tells you Christian Parker and this coaching staff are not messing around, and they're getting these guys into real NFL shape from day one. And, um yeah, I know the rookies have had a long year coming off college football season, then training for the combine and the draft process, so they don't get a real break. But, honestly, good. Get them in shape, get them ready because the season is coming fast, and the Cowboys need these rookies to make an impact immediately if they want to compete in the NFC, and I'd rather have them puking in May and ready to roll in September than take it easy now and not be prepared when the games actually matter.
Um so, here's my overall takeaway from rookie mini camp. The Cowboys got exactly what they needed out of Caleb Downs, and he looks like he's going to be everything we hoped for and more. The coaching staff seems locked in, um and detail-oriented, especially Christian Parker, who's bringing a structure and intensity that this defense has lacked.
And, the depth pieces like Jordan Hudson and Jan Barham and the tight ends are showing enough to make you think Dallas might have found some real contributors in the later rounds and undrafted free agency, and that's how you build a sustainable winner. You hit on your top picks, and you find diamonds in the rough later on.
Uh the offensive line is bonding off the field, which matters more than people realize, and guys like Tyler Guyton might need to invest in a suit, but they're building chemistry, and that's going to show up on Sundays. And, the fact that they're working these rookies hard enough to make them puke tells me this staff isn't going to accept mediocrity and they're setting a standard from day one and I love that mentality because this team has been too soft for too long and it's time to change the culture.
Uh the Kobe Durant number situation is annoying, but it'll get resolved and in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but it is funny that it's become a storyline and it shows you how passionate this fan base is about everything Cowboys related even jersey numbers and that's what makes covering this team so fun because every little detail matters to you guys and I appreciate that energy because it's the same energy I bring to this channel every single day. Before we wrap this up, I want to remind you one more time.
