Grass sugar levels follow a daily cycle, being lowest in early morning when plants have depleted their stored sugar overnight, and highest in early afternoon to late evening when photosynthesis has accumulated sugar throughout the day; therefore, horses prone to laminitis, metabolic issues, or insulin resistance should graze in early morning when sugar is at its lowest to minimize health risks.

The WORST Time To Put Your Horse On GrassAjouté :
You like horses? Listen up. Did you know that the sugar levels in grass changes throughout the day?
For horses prone to laminitis or horses with metabolic issues, timing matters a lot. Grass sugar is usually lowest in the early mornings because the plant has used up all of its stored sugar overnight. But once the sun comes out, that plant has all the sunlight it needs to create more and more sugar through photosynthesis, meaning that early afternoon into late evening is when sugar in the grass is at its highest.
So, if you have an easy keeper or a horse who is prone to laminitis or has insulin resistance, early morning grazing is going to be your friend. Of course, things like weather, stress, drought, and frost can change things, too.
But this is the general daily grass sugar cycle that every horse owner should know.
