Big Day!! BVD testing?!Added:
Good morning.
Um, so today is Sunday and tomorrow we have a big day.
Feeding all the cows. We are blood testing everything. Every single cow is having a blood test. We're doing um We're trying to eradicate BVD basically.
Not that we really have BVD. Um but we have had one I don't know when it died. We did a postmortem and there was something about BVD.
Um We do tag test all the calves anyway, but apparently to do this BVD It's something to do with the government. We do get some money back for it. Um which will cover the cost of doing it and then hopefully a little bit more.
Um, whether it's worth all the hassle probably isn't, but it is probably worth the hassle for our herd to become BVD free.
Uh, in the hopefully >> [laughter] >> we might find loads of BVD and we might cry in the corner. Um, no, I don't think that will happen, but you never know.
So, this morning we still have all the hogs inside. Um well, not inside, in fields, not on the moor basically. So we're going to get them in. They've managed to get in with all the lambing ewes that's left outside as well. So, we're going to get everything in.
We'll probably just feel the bags of the ewes and see if they're actually still in lamb or if they've slipped a lamb, you know, whatever.
Um and then all the hogs will go out onto the moor.
So, they only need tags and dissect. Um we might worm them. We'll see what they look like when they come in.
Um So, we're doing that basically so that we can start to clear a field.
Um, because we're going to have to obviously where we have the crush set up, we're going to set it up in the cubicles. So, we'll do all the cows and then all the calves and then we're going to put them in a field and then we'll get the like the fatness in and then the stirks.
Um and do all them and then actually the fatness will go out in a field here tomorrow afternoon with a trough and they'll stay out. Um and then hopefully the rest of the week we'll get all the other cows out.
Got to go to Leyburn on Wednesday with these last few hogs as long as the tags come.
Um Yeah, so today is just a bit of a start.
We're going to get the young bulling out of the field cuz he's in the field we're going to put the cows in.
Um probably these last few There's only one, two six left to lamb in the shed.
Uh, so we're going to put them out in the field at the back of the house so we can just keep an eye on them.
Uh Yeah, so all's good in the world.
Um and then it'll be start of the big muck out and life will be so much easier without all the cows in. It's amazing how time consuming and it's just to do every single day, which is fine. It is what it is, but it's nice when it comes to turning out there.
Um I'm just going to muck out a few lambing pens into the cows. We don't really want to put any more straw in if we can help it. So, we might have to put one more bale in for these stirks cuz they're sort of an everyday job. Um, but if I do the lambing pens into there then that'll do for today and then one more bale and then hopefully we'll get them kicked out. We'll kick them out first probably.
Don't actually know what Steven's thinking, but we'll kick them out and then the cows might just have to stay in until we've used up the silage.
Um but they're not using straw. They have a bit of sawdust in there and that's all they get apart from the calves.
Uh Yeah, so that's good. All's good. Um, and then hopefully we might be able to start doing a few different jobs which will be nice.
>> [laughter] >> Wait. So, these are the singles and a few hogs coming in.
Those two have obviously lambed and have to come in.
If you don't push too hard with the dogs, they'll hopefully go.
There they are.
Those two have lambed.
There we go.
Come on, walk.
Sometimes easier than upsetting them with dogs.
It's a shame we can't graze this. It's a nice bit grass.
I can get back in.
So, we've just got all the [clears throat] singles into the trailer.
Um, we're just going to ring them and scratch some fur off and then take them up to the other singles.
Um just save the grass where where the lambing ewes are really and give these a flush of grass since they're milking now.
Well, I'll leave it there.
Aw, really?
Where's Mommy? Hippo.
>> [snorts] >> I can't get a ring on that. Can only find one stone. Well, leave it without any completely.
I can't I can't even get it with my finger. Oh.
I'll have a think.
>> [clears throat] >> Well, I've got it.
I've got it.
Charlotte, I've got it.
I think you've got one of my rings, Charlotte.
Did you get one?
Have you got a ring?
A ring, [ __ ] I've got five on Charlotte. Scratch it.
Have a look on top of the fridge. Is washing machine Is there another ring?
Charlotte, ring.
Charlotte, ring.
Charlotte, ring.
Charlotte, come again.
>> [screaming] >> Okay.
Hip hops.
Hip hops.
Hop. Hip hop.
Hip hop.
Ooh, hard It's fine. You'll get it on now.
Put it on.
Put it on.
Put it on.
Put it on.
Put it on.
>> [clears throat] >> Have you got a bring a scanner, Jessie?
Scanner.
E tag reader. Bring E tag reader.
Now I'll organize. Hey. Hey. [screaming] Sorry about that. Hey, Connie.
You want to piss off the telly?
[clears throat] Connie. Come on then.
So, I think there's uh there's five ewes here, six, seven.
Five or six. Five or six ewes. Um and then all the hogs. So, we're going to Well, yeah. We've not got as many as we would have liked, but with the compiler back to situation last year, it is what it is.
Um, and then we lost more than we wanted through winter with pneumonia and one thing and another.
It is what it is. This year hopefully will be better. Can't be any worse, surely. All right, it's definitely going to be better. It's definitely Um Right.
I'll put you down.
You want two minutes? I don't know how much of that you can even see. I'll have a look. Um, I have a feeling I might have just had the phone the wrong way around, but I will just check and then I won't video anymore if you could see something. Um Yeah, that's what we'll do.
Uh, I did have it facing the wrong way.
So, now I'll do a little bit of what we're doing. We are giving them a dose of iodine, which we've not done before, but we thought we'd give it a try.
Um, they're all getting the tags in. All all of our homebred ones are getting the tags in.
Uh and what else? Dissect and a wormer and that's it.
>> Good morning.
Uh so, here we have it. Busy morning.
Oh, sun's bright.
Steven's lifting the crushing.
Um I've just taken the kids down Grandma's. She's going to take them to school. Well, take Joe to school and look after Charlotte.
Um Yeah.
Going to be a little bit Just It's just a lot of musical chairs, moving everyone here and there and obviously we don't want to mix up groups of ages and cows and calves and So, yeah.
It's all good fun.
Everybody's here.
>> [music] >> No, just up to the bottom of the label you're on.
Yeah.
She's only just calved.
Yeah. No, that's right. Over is all fine now.
Uh so, every cow came into the crush. Um I read its tag and wrote it down.
Um then the student vet I don't actually think we knew her name.
That's really bad.
Um the student vet, she got the blood from under the tail for the BVD. Um which then had a little label on which we stuck on with the cow's ear tag. And then Laura, our normal vet, she pregnancy tested them and then um That was it for the cows actually. I just wrote down a plus or a minus so we knew whether they were in calf or not.
Um and then they could go.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Oh, yeah, we can see it. We can see yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah, can see it. Yeah.
That's the cows done.
Um Everything that should be in calf barring one was in calf, so that's good.
I won't do much talking because they're so loud.
Um so, they're all blood tested. They're all PD'd and we're on to the calves now.
So, we're just having a rejig.
Uh Got to go.
That's probably the only one I'll video me worming, but it's literally an injection into the fleshy bit at the back of the ears and that lasts all summer or most of summer.
Just because we had trouble with lungworm once and we try and keep them well covered in their first grazing season.
Um But yeah, the vets will be here for the rest of it. And I've got the paperwork to do and I don't seem to be able to fit anything else in.
Just fingers. Yeah.
And their bolts work well, so that's good.
Not flinching hardly, is it?
They're all clear.
There we go.
They're all the way around are they?
Um onto the calves now. So, we just You just saw us dehorning one. Um there was only There was maybe four or five I think that had um some little horns. So, we just dehorn them while we had them.
Um and we were getting the blood for these out of the jugular.
Um so that um it was just easier. We're winning. Um so, we've done the fat ones that we just got all the ones that are like a year old that are in the lean-to and then the one young bull and we're done. Hallelujah.
Lie down. Get out. Get out, boss.
>> [screaming] [screaming] >> No.
That's it. We're finished.
Just [clears throat] been silageing up.
And uh these [snorts] lot back into cubicles now.
>> [screaming] >> I can't believe they're just coming like that. I hope they keep coming like that.
Come on, girls. Grub's up.
So, that's it. Um end of another one. As always, thank you so much for watching and we'll see you next time. Bye.
