Stanford Medicine researchers discovered that blocking the protein 15-PGDH, which increases in aging cartilage and blocks self-repair, can cause aged cartilage to regrow into high-quality hyaline cartilage without using stem cells, by shifting existing cartilage cells back to a more youthful state.

Stanford Found a Way to Regrow Cartilage — Without SurgeryAdded:
What if your body could regrow cartilage like it was young again?
Cartilage has no blood supply. So, once it breaks down, it doesn't heal.
For hundreds of millions of people with osteoarthritis, the only real fix has been joint replacement surgery.
A Stanford Medicine team found something surprising. A protein called 15-PGDH increases in aging cartilage and appears to block its ability to repair itself.
When researchers injected older mice with a small molecule that inhibits this protein, cartilage that had thinned with age grew back. And the regenerated tissue was high-quality hyaline cartilage, the kind that actually functions.
What makes this unusual? It doesn't rely on stem cells. Instead, the existing cartilage cells shift back into a more youthful state. The researchers called the results remarkable.
The team also saw regenerative effects in human arthritic cartilage tissue, but this is still early-stage research, mouse and tissue models. Human clinical trials for cartilage regeneration have not yet started. The study was published in Science in November 2025 by Stanford's Blau and Botani Labs.
If it translates to humans, it could change how we treat arthritis without replacing the joint. If you find this kind of science worth following, subscribe and hit like. More coming.
